They are.requ‘red to pay a tax to the city on their business, and yet another tax to the Govern- ment, and can justly claim some protection in carrying on that business. And yet they have been driven “from pillar to post,” in such a manner that their business is well nigh broken up; and thongh not so intended by Capt. Todd, Iam sure, (who I believe to be a just and hon- orable officer,) the effect of their displacement from their old stands in front of the hotels has been to enable two or three large livery stables, in conjunction with the hotels, to monopolize nearly the whole hacking business, to the detri- ment of a large, industrious and respectable portion of the commanity. It seems to me too, taking into consideration the great width of Pennsylvania avenue, and the inconsiderable space occupied bya single line of hacks in front of the hotels—that the amount of inconvenience suflered by army wagons from the hacks has been much exaggerated to Capt. Todd; and again, it does not seem quite apparent how the same hacks will occupy less space or afford less obstructions to army wagons in tront of the resery ations than they will in front of the hotels. Anyhow, I trust that some means will be found to afford relief to the hackmen, so that their livelihood may not be altogether cut off. JusTicE. See eee Larceny Cases.—Last week, Officer Alex- ander Clements was robbed of fiiteen dollars, which was taken from under a pillow at his house, and suspicion fell on a colored boy, William Cole, employed in the house, who, however, s!renuously denied it, and charged another boy with the act, who was arrested and dismissed. Officer Clements, on inquiry, found that Cole had been spending monvy quite free- ly, and again charged him with the act, when he acknowledged taking ten dollars. Justice Drury committed him to jail for court. On Sunday, Elizabeth Miles, who is charged by Richard Slaughter (both contrabands,) with stealing fifteen dollars from him, was arrested by Officer Crump and taken before Justice Drury, when Slaughter testified that he laid his pocket-book, containing the money, on a counter of a store, ana it was picked up by the prisoner, who acknowleged taking it, and said she would return the money, but the money not being forthcoming, Slaughter had her ar- rested, and she was sent to jail by Justice Drury. eee Wirz Beaters.—Night before last, John ried was arrested by officer Crump, charged by his wife with whipping her, and he was locked up during the night, and yesterday morning Justice Drury held him to bail to keep | the peace. He left the office, but in a short time his wife came back and complained that Jobn had been to the house and taken his clothes and money, and was about to leave the city, leaving her with four small children;and about this time Joha was seen running past the station on his way to the eleven o'clock cars, in which we belie > he succeeded in get- ting off. On the same night, ofucer Stinchcomb ar- rested John Flaherty, residing in Conneaught row, for beating his wife, and yesterday morn- ing Justice Drury committed him to the work- house. The neighbors, before he was arrested, charged that he had whipped half the people in the row, seme of whom were ‘-kilt,” but none appeared against him except his wife. gn SENT TO Count —sester sys the case of Santo Strixioli, Frixioni Raffaelle and Michael ‘Lastro, charged with the $300 robbery, was taken up by Justice Clayton. The witnesses who were expected to be procured by the de- fence not being present, the case was argued by the counsel and submitted for final decision by the justice. The justice remarked that it ‘was a case of too much i to be passed over lightly, and ought to be thoroughly inves- tigated. Without pretending to base an opinion of the guilt orinnocence of the parties upon ths evidence before him, he thought that public justice required its examination by the grand jury, and would therefore require all three to give bail for their appearance at the criminal court, ———.___ U.S. CouRT OF CLatus.—The United States Court of Claims will commence its October term next Monday.
