Malachi Stephens, malicious mischief; jai Sa ge ViLLArnous Conpuct.—Monday night, while Wyman was performing at Odd Fellows’ Hall, a@ ne.ro named Malachi Stephens threw aglass bottle through the window and struck a lady on the head, cutting ber forehead a very ugly gash an inch long and very deep. The negro was employed in astore in the building. He was arrested by officers Crown, of the police, and Busher, of the city police; but before se- curing him he threw both the officers down, and would have escaped, but officer Crown knocked him down with his elub. The lady, Miss Mary Townsend, of Philadelphia, ap- peared before Justice Giberson yesterday and testified to the facts as tar as she knew— that she was struck with a glass bottle while seated in Odd Fellows’ Hall, and severely cut. Other witnesses proved the charges against him, and he was committed for court for ma- licious mischief, and was fined $0.71 for disor- derly conduct. RESIST .NG AN OFFICE lexander Taylor, vas arrested some ago forstealing nd was held to bail for court. Taylor declared his intention of leaving the city, and his bondsraan had him arrested by officer Franklin yesterday. On the way to prison Taylor d so desperately that the officer to call a citizen to his aid, and finally knock down the negro with his club. The fight occurred at the corner of Eleventh and E streets, where the spot is marked with & pool of blood that flowed from Taylor’s head. A wagon was, however, obtained, and Taylor ‘was conveyed to the jail. Taylor is known to be a desperate fello on a former occasion, under the oid police »m, an officer had the same trouble, and was obliged to knock him on the head with a spade in order to secure him. a eee TAKEN Down A LitTLeE—Monday night, a colored girl named Mary Snyder, was arrested hy Officer Slater, on the charge of disorderly conduct, anc taken to the Fifth Ward station, where she deciared that she was as good or better than any white person, and as tor po- licemen, they would swear in any way for fifty cents. Yesterday morning she, however, was “sot back” by the decision of Justice Fur- guson, who fined her $1.94. =e BROKE THE CELL.—On Monday morning. of- ficer Wanneilarrested John Morrisy, 15th New York, a soldier, charged with being drunk and disorderly, and he was locked up in one of tne cells attached to the station; but during the af- ternoon he managed to kick a board off and escaped, when he was pursued and recaptured by officer Keating, who brought him back, and he was turned over to the military. I do this the more readily in regard to Hoofiand German Bitters, prorated by Dr. C, M. Jackson, of this city, because I was preiudiced against them Yor many years, under the impression that they were chiefly an alcoholic mixture. I am indebted to my friend Robert Shoemaker, Esq., for the removal of this prejudice by proper tests, and for encourage- ment to try thera, when suffering from great an@ long continued debility. The use of three bottles of these Bitters, at the beginning of the present year, was followed by evident relief, and restoration to agegree of bodily and mental vigor which I ha@ not felt for six months before, and had almost de- spaired of regaining. I thercfore thank God ap@ my friend for directing me to the use of them. s J.
