CEE aT A ET ES THE EVENING STAR. | jote for the Doctors.—A{ Remedy for 2% Diptheria i is affection which comprises those known | ita the various names of bad sore throat, { angina croup, and the French angine covenneuse, | has hitherto been considered one of the most ' difficult to cure. We some time back gave an account of Dr. Trideau’s method, which con- sists in administering storax under the form of asyrup; but we now findinthe Revue Thera- eutique, &® paper by Dr. A. De Grand Boulogne, ice Consul at Havana, in which he mentions ice as an infallible specific. As this, from its extreme simplicity, wonld, if effective, be far | superior to any yet tried, we cannot refrain from quoting the cases mentioned by theautuor, who had published this remedy as far back as Februrary, i560, 2nd consequently complains, | vot without reason, (if its efficacy is such as he | describes it) of the inexcusable negligence of | practitioners in not taking notice of it, thereby | allowing many valuable lives to be lost, The | following cases came under his observation at- | ter that date. In March and April, 1861, the | disease in question broke out underan epidemic form, and chiefly attackedadults with sach vir- | ulence thatin one week three young women died in one house. One of Dr. De Grand’s pa- tients afflicted with blephacie, was seized with it, and as he could not immediately attend, ow- 1 ing to the severity of the cage, another physi- ciun was called in, who ordered emetics and aluminous gargles, which produced no effect. At length Dr. De Grand came, aud found the tonsils greatly swollen, aud a false membrane covering them. He immediately administered | small pieces of ice, and by the following morn- { ing the tumetaction of the tonsils had dimin- ; ished by half, and the false membrane had nearly disappeared. That yery evening she was enabled to take food. Profiling by this exampl few days after her brother was wed with sore throat, presenting the same iminary symptoms as those of his sister but he, without waiting for the Dr. atonce took some ice, and was rid of his core throatin a tew hours. Some days later, Dr. De Grand was summoned toa young lady who had been labor- ing under the disease for some forty-eight b Hi remedies had failed. and the pareu‘s, relttions and friends of the family were plung- ed in the decpest sorrow. When Dr. De Grand ordered ice, a general cry of astonishment was uttered by al} present. Ice for asore throat! Impossible! It was sheer murder! Dr. De Grand miintained bis ground, and atter mach expostulation, during which much time was Tost, he obtaimed his end. Before 21 hours were over the pauent wasin full convalescence. Ba- ing at Vera Crazona mission, he wasrequested tosee a young man who was eked with malignant sore throat, and had been treated Without effect by ceuterizations with hydro- ebloric acid and astringent gargles. Here again he had to battle with the prejudices of the family, but wasatlengti allowed to administer ice, The young man recovered in the course, ot the following day. Dr. De Grand has now been using this remedy for the last twelve years, without having met witha sing)» fail- ure. This is whathe says, but even if only haif of what he says were true, the method should be tried by others. Cold garzles have been employed with success by Dr. Blanc, of Strasturg, why not ice.—Gelignani. BF Queen Victoria recently gave audience tosome New Zealand chiefe and their wives. ‘One ofthe latter being likely to increase her family, the Qlueen expressed herself as much pleased at the prospect of such a distinguished event happening in England—if the infant was @ boy it was to be called Albert, if Vother Vic- toria, and in either case she wished to be god- mother. “The distingnished natives,” says the Court Journal, who tells the story, fairly cried with joy !” aa The New Orleans Era records the case ofaman named Henry Myers, who was struck by. Lightning, the shock suspending animation dor over 24 hours, and giving him so much the appearance of a dead man as to deceive the coroner who held an inquest, and even his wife and children. Every preparation was made for the funeral, and the man was al- ! ready coffined, when he revived, and is now doi ng well. eS a Se prontant TO PURCHASERS, j In order to make room for my large Fall Stock, I whall offer from the present date to lst of October my entire stock at greatly reduced prices.
