Lope erie Tue New Scnoot-Hovse is THE SIxtTH ‘Wakp.-A meeting of the joint committee of Council end of the School Trustees was held last Bight in the Mayor’s office, City Hall, for the purpose of receiving and acting upon the re- port of the sub-building committee. There ‘were present Messrs. Semmes (acting Mayor), Ellis and Walsh of the Board of Trustees, and Ferguson and McUathran. of the Board of Common Council. The sub-committee, through Mr. Ferguson, Teported that they had visited the new build- ing and found the work progressing finely. The materials used are of the best quality, nd the work is welldone. Abundant mate- rial of all kinds for the progress of the work is upon the ground. The lateness of the spring and other unavoidable causes have retarded the progress of the building to some slight ex- tent, but the contractor hopes to haye it com- pleted in ample time yet. The situation of the building is on high and open ground, commanding atull view of Penn- sylyania avenue. The architects of the build- ing, Messrs. Cluss and Kammerhueber, are producing fine effects in the appearance of the building, by massing and shaping the exterior walls in 4 peculiar way, suggested by the nu- merous flues required for an efficient system of heat and ventilation; and which also answer the purpose of separating the school-rooms so thateven through the windows pupils in dif- ti rent roems cannot communicate. These flucs and their tops are thus made to be ornamental 1s useful. The window sills, lintels, ecting cornices are of brick and iron, ving been discarded as much as possi- e ices haye been castinto a variety ot t onot think that looking at 1 its bearings they could have yantageous contract than that and they sre convinced thit leted this building will be one of t bstanualand cheapest that has been erected here in along while. One object has been to make the building as near fire-proof as poseible, and the mmittee believe the con- ¢ succeeded. All the school rooms pd by brick walls, at least 14 inches thick. ‘Phe distribution and quantity of light as well as the cts have peen made # special study b: hitect. The spacious stairs have heavy wrought tron strings fasten- ed at their ends to wrought iron beams. Am- pie provisions tor water has been made, and a well fitted up cloak-room foreach school room erected. ol the Sexes &re to be kept separa- ge of soand from one rooin of y to nnother has been counteracted as far as possible. A number of the school rooms, which are 25 by 30 feet, and 15 feet high, muy be lengthened to nearly 53 feet by placing the teacher’s deskin a well-proportioned niche Steet wide by 4 deep. The rooms are built so @s to Allow each pup!! an area of 13 square feet anda yolvme of 19 cubic feetof air—an amount considered sufficient by all competent judves. Besides the ten scheo! rooms, there is a hall 80 feet long, 30 feet wide and 16 feet high, which can be at any time subdivided into a well- lighted library and two additional school rooms, which would have favorable light for a school of design for female work and with propor- tions well adapted to musical exercises. my ‘The report was signed by all the members of the committee, and was unanimously adopted. = Se THe Pic-Nro St. Dominick’s Church yesterday at the Seventh @treet Park .was largely attended, and went off in the most orderly and pleasant manner.
