Se Casts or Stw StROKE.— Yesterday evening, about six o’clock, officer Frazier found a man dying on the pavement on Seventh street, near north. He was supposed to be very drank, and was taken to the Station-house of the Fourth Ward, where, in a very few minutex, it was ascertained that he was suffering from the effects of heat, and was to all appearance, «dying. Sergeant Cronin and his men set to work to make him comfortable and sent for a physician. Afterlooking about fora Doctor, the oficer succeeded in finding Dr. May, who premptly went tothe station. Dr. M. ordered an application of ice to his head, a blister to the back of his neck, and mustard plasters to the interior surface of his thighs. The officers detailed to nurse him dia not leave him a mo- Moment; and at five o’clock the poor tellow fell into a quiet slumber, and the officers felt satis- fied that their labor had not been in vain. Yesterday afternoon another case occurred in Missouri avenue, near Third street. A man, whore pame is unknown, but who used to work at schoemaking ina little shanty south side of the avenne, near Third street, fell in the street. He was kindly taken into the coach establishmentot ithe Messrs. McDermot: by the proprietors, and physicians were soon in at- tendance. Mr. McDermott and family, officers Pendle and Lynch, with others, attended the eufferer during the night, and were highly eratified tosee signs of returning conscious- ness as the result of their labors this morning. One of the laborers engaged in digging for Jay Cooke & Oo.,at the foundation of their bank building, was sun-struck yesterday Alternoon about 2 e’clock. The case is a very critical one, ConFLict or Orinion the Washington Gas Company stipulates that the company shall charge Government twenty- eizht cents and other consumers thirty cents per 100 cubic teet. Since the internal revenus daw has been in operation the company have added the 15 per cent. tax to their bills. To this Government and others objected, and the subject was referred to Dr. Brodhead, Second Controller of the Treasury Department, who hae decided that the compan: as no right to exceed the rate prescri! in this act, as no act repealing that has been passed, and that it was clearly the intention of the internal revenue lnw that companies should pay the tax out of their profits, for which reason the graduating scale of the tax was made upon profits, vary- ing from smi] to large amounts.
