We are here to celebrate the first anni- versary of the opening of the Washington and Georgetown Railroad. This day one yearago, as many of you will remember, we assembled on Fifteenth street, in front of the State De- partment, to commence the running of the cars in the streets of Washington. On that day—as Mr. Haggerty, whom I see before me, will doubuess recollect—we started nine cars—the first one of which Mr. DeSilver (still in the service of the company) conducted and'‘ran to the Capitol. The enterprise has been a success, and for this, gentlemen, we are, to a greatextent, im- | debted to you. Gentlemen, you certainly do not expect me at this late hour to make any extended remarks.
