THE EVENING STAR. A GERMAN LEGEND. : There:was once & cook-maid named Grethel, who, when she went outon festival days, wore | Ted;heeled shoes, and held heréelt proudly, | sbitking allthe time how handsome and giy | ~she looked. On her return home, she always took a good draught of beer, and then, as it | gave her a good appetite, she treated herself to the best in the larder, saying, as she ate, “a | cook must know how things taste if she wants | to make them Hed | “*Grethel,” said her master to herone day, “I | expect a friend to sup with me this evening, so | roast a couple of fowls for us!” | “Dil see about itat once, sir,” answered | Grethel. | Off she ran, caught two plump young chick- | ens, killed them, scalded them, plucked them, | stuck them on aspit, aud as supper time was approaching, put them down to roast. They | svon began to brown, and froth, but the guest did not come. “If your viistor be not here presently.” bawled Grethel from the kitchen, “111 have to take the chiekens from the fire, but it will be 2 sin and a shame not to eat them the moment they are done.” “Pltrun ont and fetch him,” answered her master. Assoon rshis back was turned, Grethel moved the spit from the fire, saying: “Its hot work this turning, and who krows when the guest will come! In the meantime, I'll go down into the celar for a drink.” Down she went, drew a pitcher fall of beer, and witha “Bless you, Grethel !” tooka hearty dranght. «One drink brings on another,” said she; so she finished the contents df the jug, and then went up stairs to pnt the chickens tothe fire again. - Lhope I have forgotten nothing in the cook- ing,” thonghtshe, asshe merrily turned the spit. “How nice they smeil! it’sa cin anda shame that theres no one here to eat them. She looked outof the window to see if her Master was coming, but there was no sign of either him or his gnest—and returning to her Post by the spit, she found that a wing of one of the chickens was scorching. “Better eat it than that it shonid burn,” said she to herself; foshecut itoff and ateit ont of the way at once. “The cther must follow, I preceive,” She remarked, as she noticed the awkward appear- ance of the mutilated bird, ‘or master will fa cy there's something amiss.” As scon as the second wing was dispatched, she again looked out for her master, but still could sce nothing of him. «Hey, Grethei,” cried she, “enjoy yourself; you have begun one chicken, so now take a drink and finish it; why should you not wel- come therood gifts in your reach ?” Accordingly, after taking along draught of fresh drawn beer, Grethel satdown in joy and gladness of heart, and soon left no trace of the Wingless fowl. Still her master did not come, and as che looked at the solitary roast that yet remained on the spit, the thought struck her that where one was, the other ought to be also. «They make a pair, and belong together,” said she; and resolved that the second chicken should follew the first. It was half gone when her master returned. “Quick, Grethel,” cried he, “bring in the supper; the visiter is com- ang.” nm a moment,” answered Grethel, while her master went to see that the table was proper! spread. He was justsharpening the carving knifeon the back door step, whena modest knock was heard at the front door, and Grethel, peeping out, perceived the expected guest, “Hush! hush ! she whispered, putting her finger to her lip; “be off before my master sees you or you'll repent: he has invited you tosup- per, indeed. but his intention is to cut off your ears. Hare ! don’t you hear him sharpening the The guest heard the ominons sougd, and taking all She said for truth, ran down thesteps again as fast as he could, while Grethel hast- | ened to her master exclaiming; “A fine guest you_have asked to supper!” «What is the matter, Grethel? what do you Myan 1” «Mean ?” cried she: ‘why, your visitor has ' scampered off with both the chickens.” } “Strange behayior, indeed,” said the master; “but 1 would forgive him if he had at least left one of them.” + So saying, he rushed after the retreating guest, crying asloud ashe could: “One of | them; only one of them!” But the fugitive thought he meant one of his ears, and ran the faster, nor stepped until he reached the shélter of his own house, and had fast locked the door behind him. Drafted men become soldiers in the service of the United, States by the fact of their names having been drawn in the draft. The notifica- | tion, served upon them by the Provost Marshal, is merely an announcement of the fact, and an order for them to report for duty, at a desig- nated time and place. fi Ii. The following opinion ofthe Hon. William | g,3y Whiting, Solicitor of the War Department, is published for the information ot all concerned: “When a on has been drafted, in pur- suance of the Enrollment act of March 3, 1953, notice of such draft must be served within | ten days ther after, by a written or printed Notice, to be served on him, personally, or by leaving a at hislast place of residence; Tee quiring him to appear at a designated rendez- yous to report for duty Any person failing to report for duty after notice LEFT AT HIS LAST PLACE OF RESIDENCE, or served on him persom- ally, without furnishinga substitute or paying the $300, is pronounced by law to be a deserter; he may be arrested and held to trial by couri- | martial, and SENTENCED TO DRATH. “If a person after being drafted, and before receiving notice, deserts, notice may still be served by leaving itat his last place of resi- dence, and if he does not appear in accordance with the notice, or furnish the sabstitute, orpay | the $500, he will be in law a deserter and must be treated accordingly. There is no way or manner in which a person, once ‘ enrolled,’ can escape his public duties, and when drafted, whether present or absent, whether he changes his residence or absconds,*the rights of the United States agsinst him are secured, and it is only by performance of his duty to the country, that he will escape liability to be treated as a criminal.” WILLIAM WHITING, Solicitor of the War Department.
