Mr. Khees offered a resolution authorizing the use of the book called “Scholars Compan- ion” in the Secondary and Intermediate Schools; which was referred to the committee on books. Mr. W. J. Rhees was appointed a delegate to represent the public schools of Washington in the Teachers’ Convention called to assemble at Chicago on the 6th of August. Mr. Ellis asked to be excused from further service npon the committee on school buildings; but the board refnsed to accede to his request. Mr. Utermehle offered the following resolu- tion, Which was unanimously adopted: Resolved by the Board of Trusicea, That the i}anks of the same be, and they are, hereby re- zurned to the several reporters and to the pro- prietor of the Evening Star for the very extended and proper reports of the recent examinations and exhibitions of the public schools, and also tor the publication of ths reports of the sessious of the board. The foilowing bills were presented by the ‘Treasurer, approved, and ordered to be paid, viz:—Bill of Mr. Prosperi for music at the ex- aminations, bill of Davies & Grimes for carpenter work on school-honses, $10; bill of Mr. O'Donnell for hack hire, $3.50. Eotp ATTEMPT AT Rop —A boldattempt was made on Monday night to rob the house of Mr. R. H. Graham, Maryland avenue, while Mr. G. was absent. Miss Young, a member of the family, heard a noise in the lower part of the house, and went down to ascertain the cause. On going down she encountered a man, who, on perceiving her, went to the back door of the hall, unlocked it, and jumped over the fence. The yeung lady alarmed the neighbor- hood, but the rascal made good his escape. He is described as being dressed like a soldier. Several other attempts were made to rob heuses in the same ward on Monday night. ee ALEXANDRIA AFFAIRS.—Some eight citizens from the yicinity of Falls Church passed through Alexandria this morning en route for ‘Washington, charged with being in complicity with the rebel guerillas who have been infest- ing that region for some days past, stealing horses and other property from citizens. As a@ train of cars was moving yesterday atternoon, when near the tunnel a bale of hay cavght fire from a spark from the engine, and before Lhe fire could be checked or the train get away, one car load was destroyed.—Alezandria News, July 21.
