Jane ish s fa- mous company and the Parisian Trouve St: Denis, the only rivals to the Ravel trou »e, and ‘who have only been in this country for «short time, will make their first appearance this eve- ning. The entertainment will consist of ballet, singing, dancing, tableaux, tight rope perform~- ances, vaulting, somersaulting, &c. A most delightful midsummer entertainment is thus effered, CANTERBURY continues to be wonderfully attractive, and during this evening an enter- | tainment of song, dance and Ethiopian ecven- tricity will be given. The drama, + Fortanes ‘of War,” and the laughable burietta, «The French Dancing Master,” will both be per- formed also; and during the e ening an exhi- bition of the wonderful effects sf laughing gas will be given. Sa Tue FREsHET—Its Damage -Resumption of Travel —The freshet on Monday was the great- estevir known along the line of the Washing- ton Branch Railroad, and did much damage to the crops, the roads and the bridges and cul- verts, and also washed away several culverts on the Annapolis Railroad, blockading the engines und cars near the Junction, and several along the line of the Washington road. The trains from Baltimore got out as far as Hanover switch on Monday, and after remaining several hours were obliged to put back, and the trains from this city got a few miles beyond Bladens- burg, and had to put back. The tine mill dam of Chas. A. Gamprill, on the Patapsco, near the Relay House, was carried away early on Monday morning, and ilooded the railroad, delaying the Frederick train seyeral hours. A smail but strong culvert near Hanover switch was also carried away, with some of the track, but a number of workmen were set to work, and the job was completed on Monday night. At Jesup’s Cut the water overflowed the track for several miles, the water sweeping down furiously towards the Junction, bearing away the raiiroad platform and carrying it several hundred yards distant. By far the greatest loss to the railroad com- pany is the destruction ef the splendid stone bridge over the Big Patu t, at Laurel, which ‘was washed away about7 o'clock on Monday morning. The water here commenced to rise xhbout 6 o’clock in the morning, and rose fifteen deet in one hour, when the bridge was washed awiy. At the time it went off there were some thirty soldiers and citizens on it, looking at the turbulent waters, which had spread over the roads in that vicinity to the depth of fonr or five feet: but all of them, with the exception of Jeremiah Reed, of company K, 109th N. Y., who was, it is supposed, caught among the Stone, succeeded in making their escape. The bloc jouse at the north end of the bridge was carried off, but fortunately those who were in it got out safely. The railroad at Paint Branch, beyond Bia- densburg, was overflowed, and the under- pinningof the track and culvert washed away, the gravel and stone in some places being car- ried a distance of several handred yards. The oticers of the railroad company immediately puta force of hands at work at Laurel, and yesterday they were getting the timbers ready i put in position; and near Bladensburg a large number of colored laborers were em- ployed in filling in the track, and ina short ume itis thought that the trains will be abie to run as regularly as ever. Yesterday the passengers of thesa trains reached here, those leaving Baltimore at eight reaching here at 2% o'clock, and those at 10 at 4 o'clock, aad another train arriving at 91 e'clock; the passengers having to leave one train beyond nt Branch and walk over the turnpike bridge, which, although a wooden structure, Was hot carried off, connecting with trsins in charge of Messrs. Koontz and Ed- monds, the agents in this city, and the con- ductors. The loss to the farmers cannot be estima: All of them being iferers to some extent, and some of them having nearly ail their crops Swept away. Some stock was drowned, and in one case one entire field of corn was coyered with sand from the hills. P. S.—The rains ot yesterday afternoon, which was quite heayy beyond Bladensburg, caused several of the streams to raise, and the track at Paint Branch, about seven miles out, red, was washed con- b in containing troops passed Over this work about $3 o'clock last night, but hardly had it passed when the whole structure gave Way, aud was carried off. Col. MeCalhim, superintendent of military rail- roads, has at this place a large number ot work- men, and will no doubt soon haye the track again in running order. Thet at White Oak Bottom, a few miles beyond Beltsville, was also damaged Inst nicht, but we believe that the troop train before men- tioved passed over it, and transferred its pas- sengers at Laurel. ‘The mails arr night about 9 o'clock, f © arrived to-day. some delay in the travel for several Gays to come, but the repairs will be mace us speedily as po: le. The officers of the roud, both im this city and Baltimore, are doing all in their power to have the road speed- ily put in order. Tue ENROLLMENT IN THE DisTRIcT.—The Board et Enroliment for this City and District, eons: shal; Hon. Hugh J. Anderson, ex-Governor of Maine, Commissioner, and Dr. Keasbey, of this city, Examining Surgeon, have had the enroll- ing officers industriously 2t work, and the lat- ter will conclude their labors before the close | of the present week.
