On the Police report she is named as Catharine Burk, but this, it is sald, is mot her real name. It appears that she went to the office ofa man doing business on the avenue, near Third street, tosee him, Mrs Burkalleging that he was her husband in the sight of God, he being the fa- ther of the child then in her armsand the father of another child now deceased. The man ran Sway when he saw Mrs. Burk and avoided her, and this, together with the effects of liquor which she had drunk, so enraged her that she brokea window and was about to trate other disorderly acts, when officers Cramp and. Barkely, of the Eighth precinct, attempted to arrest her. She resisted, and jell heavily upon the pave- ment, where she lay kicking and screaming turiously, and attracting quite a crowd of the curious of both sexes. A gentleman in the crowd picked up the child, and thus sayed it trom being hurtin the melee. Atter a desper- ate struggle the officers succeeded in getting the woman partially upon her feet, and be- tween dragging and compelling her to walk, they got her as far as the Capitol gate, where another struggle ensued, the woman cailing plaintively for her child, and also in loud ac- cents upon the man for whom she had sacri- ficed all, to come and rescue her from the hands of ine Pouce: The gentleman who car- ried the child then walked along by her side, until they arrived near Maryland avenue, where a wheelbarrow was obtained, and the womnn, after another struggle, was put there- in and wheeled to the eighth precinct station bouse. In the struggle, almost all Mrs. Burks cloth- ing was torn off, and the police had greatidif- ficulty in making their way through the curious crowd. Arrived at the Station-House, Marga- ret Burk presented a sorry appearance. ler dress had been torn off; her under-clothing so Tipped as to partially expose her person; her hair, (which was thick and beautiful,) was dishevelled; her hands and face dirty from mud and dust, and her body and what of cloth- ing remuined, covered with blood: her hands (which she cut severely when she broke the window,) having bled very freely. At the Station-House she tore her bonnet to pieces, and also tore other portions of her dress, and was finally committed toa cell, her child hay- ing first been given in charge of a colored | woman, Margeret Burk tells @ pitiful tale. She al- leges that she was once respectably employed in New York: that the man she called upon on Monday, and who avoided her, had seduced her, and under the promise ef love and protec- tion, had become the father of two children by her, The first was still born, Thesecond (the one she had with her) was born a few months ago in New York. The father of the child drugs and medicines. This she refused to do, and he then persuaded her to leaye it in a foundling hospital in New York, and come to this city. The latter request she complied witb, and arrived here some time ago, bringing the child with her, however. This annoyed her triend, (!) but he, however, secured her a boarding piace, and visited her occasionally. Last winter he had her boarding at the res dence of «negro onthe Island. She was obliged | to occupy a room withont fire, and she alleges “was obliged to lay | er child, in order to Mrs. Burk visited in bed all day long keep both trom freezing. this man occasionally at his office. and it was while paying such @ yisiton Monday that the disturbance oecurred. Theman who has thus eaused the ruin of this woman, who is yet young and pretty, has, we are informed, a wife and five children living. He has accomplished his purpose with Mar- garet Burk, and as is usual in such cases his adulterous love has been turned to hate, and he would now get rid of his victim; for we told that he has frequently asked the office ot the eighth precinct to threaten her with the workhouse whencyer she came about his office. This, of course, they refused to do, and would not airest her except for such cause as that mentionedabove. When Margaret was brought ont for a hearing she was dismissed, the justice ne doubt feeling that she had been as mach sinned against as sinning. ee SERENADE.—Col. A. R.
