LOCAL NEWS. AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT. CANTERBURY Hatt.—In addition to the at- tractions already at this popular hall, Manager inn has added Denny Guailagher. Johnny Mack and R. H. Collins, three Ethiopian per- tormers of a high order. They will appear to- night in connection with Edeson, Eva Brent, ‘Edwards, Armstrong and the rest of the old favorites. The dfama, «The Fortunesof War,” will be performed besices the regular concert hall entertainme: The School Examinations. he Male Grammar School, Third District, arte ae ace ot Mr. W. W. McCathran, ‘was examined in the school room, (it such it can be called,) a the corner of D stréet sonth and Third east, on Tuesday afternoon, July 7, py Messrs. Wilson, Miller, Ellis, Walsh, and Wight, of the trustees, and Mr. Z. Richards, andthe scholars, Rumbering, 47,o0f whom 15 were present, were preity thoroughiy ex- amined in all the branches usually tanght in a school of this grade. In reading some of the scholars did exceedingly well, carefully paus- ing at the proper places, and correctiy, in most instances, emphasizing the words. The differ- ent classes appear to have had impartial atten- tion paid to them bythe teachers, and it was noticed by these present that the lowest class had improved during the year in about the same proportion as had the first. The first class solved some of the most dificult problems in arithmetic and analyzed the most difficult sentences in grammar, while the other classes in these studies did. equally as well as far as they had been advanced. For their examina- tion in mental arithmetic, the scholars deserve especiul notice. The copy books of the boys, With but few exceptions, were m good order, aud their behavior during the long period of ‘time they were undergoing the examination, al:hough not quite as orderly as we haye seen in other schools, nevertheless was very credit- abfe under the circumstances, The singing in this school was a feature, and the chorus «Rally Round the Flag,” was exceedingly well sung. Among the teachers present were Mr. Thom- son, of the Fi District; Mr. Wilson, of the Second; Miss Slater and others. but there were | but few of the parents of the scholars and none of our * city fathers.” | gramme. At the conclusion of the exercises, the boys | were appropriately addressed by Mr. Richards, | who stated that he had attended the examina- tion 1 this school last year, and that he saw in | them murked improvement. ‘This school is kept in an old hulk of a build- ing, end the furniture, which is of the modern Style, seems to be very much out of place; but the scholars are in high elee over the prospect auring the coming year they are to give he classic old walls, where many of ourold eus have in bygone days received their ed- irom McCormick and Fill, for a room fine building now in course of construc- e corner of Pennsylvania ayenue and E-ghth pet east. Tbe Female Gram nar School of the Third District, Miss Ramse, teacher, was examined ou Wednesday, July oth, by Messrs. Walsh, Wight, Davis, Wilson, and Mr. M. H. Miller, {the Board of Trustees, and_by Mr. Fred. ate secretary to Rear Admiral who was formerly an efficient member | ard. The examination was strict, as atthe other schools, and the pupils evinced a proficiency which altogether gratit although the clas had not ad vanced as far x other grammar schools. ‘The reading was ad- able, and the classes here in that important neh will compare fayorably withany school in the cit The order was so good throughout that the teacher was not compelled to exercise hier author in any one instance. The number on the roll of this school is forty, thirty-seven or whom were presentat the examination. Tha échooi is held in the second story of a building at the corner of Seventh and G sirects east—a ‘Toom badiy ventilated and otherwise illy adapted to school purposes; bnt this difficulty ‘Wiil be obviated soon as the new school pbuilding ts finish At the conclusion of the exercises on Wednes- day, Mr. Wilson, of the Fourth District, ad- dressed the pupils, and expressed himself hichly eratified. The school, he said was net so fur advanced as other grammar shools, but So far as it went the examination v satistac- tory; bat there was reom forimproyement, and by next year he hoped to witness greater re- sults. It was a remarkable fact that the first elass in this school was composed of but two pupils, and he hoped the girls then in the school would not leave their studies so soon, but would remain louger, and thus swell the first-class here to as large proportions as at other schools. The reason of the smallness of the first-class | was explained by one of the Trustees of the Lhird District, who remarked thai the citizens | of the Navy Yard were not so well off in this | Worlds goods as in the other school disuicts, | and therefore they required the services of their children at home at an earlier age than in other sections of the city. This has been a | serious drawback to the Third District gram- maar schools, and has bad a tendency to make the schools appear more backward than those of similar grade in other sections of the city. | FOULTH DISTRICT. The Male Grammar School, Fourth District, John E. Thompson teacher, was examined on ‘Thursday afternoon by Messrs. Wight, Wilson, Miller, Holmead and Ellis of the Board of ‘Trustees. and by Messrs. A.C. and Z. Rich- ards, and other gentlemen interested in the cause of education. The high reputation this school has had for many years under the care of Mr. Thompson, causes always much inter- est in its examinations, consequently we were not surprised te see as usual a large gathering of friends of the pupils and of the public schools. Among those present were Messrs. f. E. Lioyd, Gulick, Ellis and Noyes of the City Councils; Dr. Croggon, Mr. Hyde of Georgetown; Mr. Conant, formerly of the Ma husetts Normal Schools; F. D. Stuart of the Navy, formerly of the School Board; and | Bir. S. J. Thomson, Mrs. Amiden, Miss Emma {| Reed, the Misses Lee, Miss Seville Dayis, Miss | Acton, and other leading teachers. The room | is of good size, and is well provided with suit- able furniture we should judge. It was hand- somely decorated with national flags, large and small, gracefully draped. ‘The demand for boy labor at the arsenal and other localities in this District of late has caused a pretty severe drainage upor tle best material of this school for the yeur. It was thus requisite to take boys not up to the grade of the school to make the complement, a fact { that might fairly have been taken into account had the school shown less effectively on ex- amination day than on preceding years. But if there was any such falling off it was evident | only to the more experienced eye of the teacher, and it is certain that great additional laborand | pains must have been taken to bring his mate- rial up to the average mark of his school. Of 44 scholars on the roll 42 were present. ‘The usual thoroughness of the system of in- struction in arithmetic by Mr. Thompson was i developed happily at this examination, though de had not quite as many “ crack scholars” in these classes as on some former years. In his- tory and the Constitution of the United States the pupils showed themselves thoroughly « posted,” and in spelling, that experienced questioner, Mr. M. H. ler, tried (by request) mest ingeniously to puZzle them quite unsue- cessfully. Original compositions were read, nd well read, in tones neither strained nor in- Sudibie,& happy mean, by Ambrose Stephen- son, Frank Stephenson, Charley Luff, Samuel Garrett, Wm. Rowe and Eddie Hay. ‘In gram- mar, the pupils passed a searching examina- tion with the greatest credit, and in dictation the results were equally satisfactory. The Cassell prize for good morals was pre- fented by Mr. Wight to John Y. Roseberry; atur which Mr. Richards made some remarks expressive of bis gratfication at the examina. tion, speaking of Mr. Thompson as & most earnest and thorough teacher, whose methodi- cal systematic course of instraction was well illustrated by the prompt manner in which the boys thought out the answer to any question pro- posed out of the routine of their books, Mr. Conant and Mr. Lloyd followed in sim- ilar expressions of great gratification, and the exercises were concluded by'2 spiritedly. patriotic song by the boys. Prof. Daniel, who ‘Was present, seemed rather proud of the vocal aghievements of his class. He had reason to be. The discipline at this school exhibited its old order of excellence. a Female Grammar School, Fourth District, Mrs. Margaret A. Amidon teacher, was ex- amined on Friday. Of the 53 scholars on the roll 52 were present. This schoel, like the male grammar school, same district, ranks se high thatits €Xminations excite very general inter- est. Itmay shame parents and others in the case of examinations in some other districts where not & single visitor has been present, to ‘be teld that on this occasion it was absolutely necessary to place burriers across the room to protect the classes from undue pressure from the throug of spectators! Messrs. Wight, Cas- sell, bilis, iller, Urermehle, Rhees, Mor ell, and Wilson, of the i\.ard ot Trustees, were present: T. E. Lioyd and Noyes, of the City Z Messrs. A.C. and Z. Richards, Prof. James Hallowell, Drs. Morgan_and Croggon, Sniling Master F. D. Stuart, Mr.Conant,oi Massacusetie, Mr. S. J. Themscn, of the First District Grammar S-booi, Mr. John E. Thompson, of the Fourth District Grammar School, and also a very targe representation of the female teachers of Schoois, public and private, throughout the city. The room, which is a cheerful airy one, ammediately above that of the male grammar +chool, same district, was handsomely decor- ated with flowers and the National Flag, and filled as it was with pretty and tastefully dressed young Iadies, (the Seventh is the ban- rer ward for female beauty. it will be remem- bered,) presented a thoroughly attractive ap- pearance. ‘The examination exteaded from 1 o'clock | quently intermarried at the time and in the | cars of the first train and damaging some others. | the 109th had his skull fractured, and it is sup- | at some points completely | shavings burning under the porch of Downing j wnuli near 7 p. If the jury believes from the eyidence aforesaid that the petitioner Emily F. And if, from the whole evidence, the jury shall find that the id Emily was born on the 3istof March, 1535, that the acqnaint- ance and intercourse between the said Eliza- beth Browr and Tillotson Brown began four- teen months before the birth of suid Fmily, and continued between two and three months, was then interrupted and not renewed fur more than three months, and that she was at the end of that time not pregnant with Emily, then the jury are to find no} the possi- bility, but the fact itself, whether ‘Tillotson P. Washington and Baltimore Kailroad, by which thirty or fu persors, all of thein belonging to the United States volunteers, were severely and some of them fatally injured. The disaster, as we are informed, occurred about one mile this side of Laurel, on the Washington Branch of the Bal- timore and Ohio Railroad. A special train, which was conveying troops from this city, ran into another train standing upon the track. The train which was run into. it appears, lett this city at an earlier hour than usual, and was soon foliowed by another train. The ivad- ing train had stopped, between three and tour o'clock, at a point about one mile this side of Laurel, when the second train came up wand ran into the first, smashing the two hindmost Members of the 109th regiment New York yelunteers were, we understand, the principal sufferers, and among their wounded were 4 jarge number of officers and soldiers. One lieutenant had his leg broken, and a captain of posed will die of consequence. ge Tue StorM.—The trains from Baltimore to this city have been detained along the road to- day trom various causes. The rain of yester- day has flooded the road beyond Bladensburz, Thes o'clock train started trom this city, but returned with the information that the bridge at Paint Branch—a | small iron bridge, about eight miles trom | Washington—had been carried away; and the water was very high over the road in that vicinity. Some persons thought that the bridge wasnot destroyed, but that the fallen timber had | so choked the stream as to cause the overflow | of the bridge. The road immediately this side of Annapolis Junction is said to be completely flooded. The rain that commenced to fall yesterday | aft-rnoon in moderate quantities began in the night to come down in torrents, and at the present writing is still pouring from skies that show no indication of letting up. A “big fresh” on the river will follow, if the rain continues many hours at the present rate. ge SOLDIER STALBED AND Rornsep.—Frederick Helmbold, a member of the 157th regiment Pennsylvania volunteers, was taken to the Central Guardbouse yesterday morning in an | almost insensible condition, having been found near the depot by some of the police. He stated. that he had been attacked by a party of sailors, who stabbed him in the arm and knocked him down, and robbed him of forty dollars in money and a gold watch. In attempting to | defend himself he was also stabbed in Lhe foot, the weapon making an ugly wound. While Jying in an insensible condition,a carriage ran over him, mashing his arm in a shocking man- ner. ie Sete ALMOST A FrRE.— Yesterday morning, officer Voss, of the Second Ward, discovered some & Brother’s carpenter shop, on Tenth, near street. He signalled the Officers of the beat, Messrs. Nally and Simonds, who promptly went to his assistance. They moved the steps and extinguished the fire, and so saved the roperty from destruction. This was evident- ly an incendiary attempt. ge RogstnG THE Mait —John W. Williams, a sol@ier belonging to the 153th Pennsylvania volunteers, was arrested on Saturday and com- mitted to jail charged withropening letters be- longing to his fellow soldiers and appropriating the contents to hisown use.
