The classes, three in number, were examined by Mr. Richards and various members of tie Trustees, in spelling, mental and written arith- metic, governmental instruction, grammar, geography, &c. The whole school excel in arithmetic, mental and practical, and acquitted themselves well in reading and grammar. The first class in mental arithmetic deserves special mention, snd in reading also they were excel- lent. In grammar, the first class showed fine progress. The order observed was highly creditable to the teacher and scholars. The compositions of the scholars were well written ane all the copy bocks were scrupulously clean, At the close of the examination Mr. Rich- ards made a few timely remarks, and was fol- lowed by Mr. Sessford, who spoke of the su- perior advantages now enjoyed over those in yeurs gone by, and urged the boys to profit by them and iay the feundation for future use- fulness, and te stand true to their country, always being ready to turn their backs upon the man who reveres not the flag and institu- tions of his country. Mr. Morsell compli- | mented the boys on the progress they had mude, and Mr. Wilson said that he would have no hesitation in putiing the first class in competition with any similar cluss of boys in the country, and that at this examination there could be but one sentiment expressed, «nothing to censure, but much to praise.’ Mr. W. an- | nounced that the President of Columbian Col- Jege had tendered another scholership in that institution to such scholar as may be deter- mined on by the trustees, and that his col- Jeugue and himself, after a careful examin- m of tke written an. s propeunded at the w nexamination, had selected as the contestants on the part of the school, John Bickerton, James Pilling and El- bert Turner, of the first c tirae they bad determinedt the next Thomas Bremmerman, Luban Sremmerm: and Harry Harkness, and in the third cla: Eben McNair. Edwin Moran and 'Thomas Cis- scl deserved honcrable mention. The examination was conducted by the examining committee, consisting of Rev. Dr. G. W. Samson, Rev. Wm. H. Chapman and Major B. B. French, and by the superintendent, LW. Gallaudet, assisted by his corps of teachers. Each pupil responded readily, by signs (interpreted by the superintendent) and on the slate, to the many } questions propounded by the examiners, giving evidence of considerable acquaintance with geography, history and arithmetic. Several compositions, written by the older pupils, were read by Mr. Gallaudet. They were neatly prepared, both as it respects style and penman- ship, and the ideas which they conycyed were Well expressed. It was gratifying to notice with what facility the blind would read both scripture and history by means of raised Ir/- ters. They also played well on the piano. | Several sketches drawn by the class of mutes | under the charge of Mr. Baumerass, an artist | of this city, were exhibited. They were beau- tifully executed In the afternoon of Wednesday a public ex- hibition was giveh, which was attended by j many of the parents and friends of the schoi- ars. It was highly entertaining. Toward the close of the exercises and just before the dis- tribution of premiums, Mr. Ballard, (« mute,) one of the teachers, having resigned his sil- uation for a more lucrative one in the State ef Maine, delivered a farewell address by signs, which were interpreted by Mr. Gallaudet. When referring to his long association with the teachers and the school and his attachment to the class, which for three years he had une der his charge, and the probability that they would never more meet on earth, his emotions completely overpowered him, and compelled him for atime to suspena his remarks. The whole audience were deeply affected. At3p. m. the exercises closed, when several of the students, accompanied by their friends, left for their homes, where they will remain during the vacation. ,, The iollowing are the officers of the institu- | on:—Patron, Abraham Lincoln; President, Amos Kendall; Secretary, William Stickney, Esq.; Treasurer, George W. The:r baggage was joaded yesterday and this morning. Prince street from Fairfax io Royal was crowded with those expecting to go, and these who had assem- bled to see them off. There was many a sad good-bye spoken, and the people were getting on the boat, expecting that fora long time at least they would not again see Alexandria, when news came thatthe Secretary of War had revoked the order for the present, and that those on the boat would comeashore. The rea- Son assigned, was that on account of operations on the Peninsula, they had no plage tosend the boat, and Jand the people. It was entirely un- expected, and caused an excitement. It is a tin ves- sel made to fit the middle portion of the body, and composed of four sections, each of which is capable of holding a galion and a quarter. This extensive aud unseemly bustle gave a certain Mrs. Yett, bound for Alexandria, such huge proportions as to attract the attention of the guard at Aqueduct Bridge. A search was instituted, resulting in the discovery of the above-described piece of mechanism, each sec- tion ef which was filled to its utmost capecity With “rot-gut” whisky.
