All the prominent members of the company appear. The bill is an admirable one, embracing the plays of «Married Life,” - “Jenny Lind,” and a grand concert. CANTERBURY.—“The French Spy” was per- formed last night in an entertaining manner by the Canterbury company. Miss Louisa Wells appears to much advantage in the triple char- acter of “Hamet,” «St. Alme”’ and « Mathilde.” She has a fine form and plays her part well throughout. The play will be Tepeated again to-night, and in connection withit a fine concert hall performance. ——S Councit Prockepings, July 6.—Board of Aldermen. — A communication was received from the Mayor, announcing the approval of the act amendatory of an act fixing the com- pensation of Assessors, and an act making an appropriation fer cleaning and whitewashing the Western Market-house. C. McKelden and others, asking for a carriage way on F street north, from Fifth to Seventh street west, ac- companied by a bill for that purpose; petition of John E. Kendall, relative to sewerage on D and E streets, between Sixth and Seventh; petition of Jacob Kleiber, for increase of com- pensation; an act for the relief of T.C. Magru- der; and a communication from the Mayor vetoing the bill compelling the city deposi- tories to make quarterly returns. (The fast two were reported from the committee on un- finished business.) Mr. Pepper, from the committee on improve- ments, reported Common Council bill to grade and lay a gutter on i street,between Eighth and Ninth, with an ameddment striking out Eizhth and Ninth streets and inserting Seventh and Eleventh, and appropriating $100 instead of $200; which amendments were adopted and the bill passed. The bill authorizing the curbstones to be set and the footways to be paved on the south front gf square No. 338, was recommitted; the plan qequed: in such cases not haying accompanied the bill. Dorsett, for Com- missioner of the First Ward. Mr. Turton moved that the nomination be Tejected. A petition, signed by the most promi- nent property holders of the.First Ward, had been presented to the Mayor, asking him to appoint some other person than Mr. Dorsett, but the Mayorhad not acceded to their wishes. Mr. Lloyd suggested that Mr. Dorsett’s nomination be laid over, which motion, after some discussion, prevailed. The following were read three times and assed, yiz:—A bill for the relief of Rachel P. ilson; a bill making an appropriation tor ad- ding to the assessor’s books the subdivisions of squares since 1556; act to revive an act to grade Second street west, from Virginia avenue to D Street south; a bill for the repair of a certain alley in the Third Ward, and an act forthe re- liet of Henry Lee. The following trom the Board of Common Council were referred :—A bill for the repair of an alley in the Fourth Ward; for the repair ot an ailey in the Second Ward; authorizing the laying of a gutter on the east side of Seventh street west, across T street north; au horizing the repair of the alley in‘’square No. 373; au- thorizing the curbstones to be set and the foot- ‘ways paved in squares No. 907 and 930; making appropriation for the repair of alleys in the Fourth Ward; to improve H street north, trom ‘Third street east tothe Boundary: for the re- pair of the alley in square N 3; also of the alley in square No. 456; torevive au act to trim and grade I street north, from Fitth to Seventh street west, and a bill authorizing the laying of a& water mai on H street north, from Third to Fifth street west. The bill to improve N street north, from Fifth to Seventh west, and the joint resolution repealing an act of Uctober 2, 1862, were passed. ‘Lhe bill to provide suitable accommodations for the Board of School Trustees, which was introduced during the last Counc.l, was referred to the committee ou unfinished business. Alderman Gordon, of the Sixth ward, was appointed a member of the committee on the erection of @ public school house, vice Rich- ards, whose term of office as Alderman has expired. I Mr. Pepper asked and obtained leave to be absent from the next two or three meetings of the Board. Adjourned. Common Council.—A communication was re- ceived from the Mayor, calling the attention of the Board to the present registry laws, which was referred to a special committee, composed of Messrs: H. CO. ison, Michael Larner, and C.sS. Noyes. The Mayor says: «More than a year ago I directed the atten- tion of the Cuuncil to the matter, and suggested, as I now do, to you to make it incumbent on the collector to furnish the respective asses- sors, on or before a day named, with the names of all in the rolls assessed to either real or per- sonal property in their respective wards, and the register to furnish thereon on or before the same day, with transcripts or copies of the poll lists or records of yotes returned by the <ommissioners of eleotions of the several elec- tion precinets «it the poll election. These to- gether should be the basis of the registry of all persons subject to a school tax, and entitled to ‘vote at the next ensuing election, as provided for in the charter ofthecity. This will at least secure the placing upon the poll lists the names of all property holders, and such as may have exercised the franchise of voting at the election last previous and to which additions could be made in the mode pursued by the assessors in visiting every house in their several wards.” The following were referred: Petition of J. BRowy.—Circuit Court, Chief Justice Cartter, July 6.—Wi liam Dalton testified that he is a hack driver, and has driven a hack for nearly thirty years. Witness recollects Mrs. Brown, who wasstop- ping on the Avenue when he first knew her. Witness drove her out when she had a baby with her. A gentieman who went by the name of Larned, and edited a paper, came to the carriage, Stopping it two or three times in the street. By Mr. Pzent—She was living at the time on the Avenae, near Fi: ith street, and passed under the name of Mrs, Brown. The child at the time was from three to five weeks old. _Jos. Dozier, eolored— Witness has lived iri the city from 30 to 40 years, and has driven a hack and waited. Knows Mrs. B. A gentleman engaged him to go to Baltimore, and he brought Mrs. B. from Bladensburg, and drove her to Susan Weeden’s, and from there to Mrs. Dodd’s. A gentleman named Larned employed witness and paid him. i ._ By Mr. Brent—Mrs. B. joined ‘witness at a house in Bladensburg. On the way in, a gen- tleman got in the hack on Capitol Hut, but he did not go in the house with her ; but witness carried him to the house the same evening. After he found the way he went ‘himself. He engaged rooms for her at Mrs. Dodd’s after- wards, and witness saw him going backwards and forwards to and from the house. Witness never heard her called Mrs. Brown until abont three years ago, and does not remember what | her name was called. She used to take her baby with her ont a-riding from Mrs. Dodd’s. She told witness that the child was by that gentleman, eats: tothe one who engaged him to take her to Mrs. Dodd’s.) He used to stop the carriage and speak her out on the outskirts. Heappeared to be always dodging around. Sometimes he wou]d get in the car- riage, and when he reached the edge of the town he would getout and walk. Witness has seen him go in and out of the hotel. Witness waited in Brown’s Hotel, and was there at the time the boys were at school in Alexandria. About the time they left school he left the hotel. When witness brought her trom Bla- densburg it was after the boys had left school. ‘Witness has taken men to the house on B street when he knew there were other ladies boarding in the house. The house passed as Mrs. Brown’s house. Wm. Rutherford.— Witness hnew Mr. Brown. (Paper handed to witness, which he testified was his handwriting.) Witness said it was a copy of the inscription om the tombstone in Glerwood which was put up in 1859. Wn. J. O'Brien.—Witness knew Mr. B. and Mrs. B. for some years, and was intimate with the family during Mr. B.’s lifetime. Witness has heard Mrs. Wiley call Mr. B. father. During Mr. B.’s lifetime Mrs. B. spoke of Mrs. ‘W. to witness as the adopted daughter of Mr. B. Witness had a conversation with Mr. Cook, and that C. asked what he (witness) was doing in the city, and when witnrss replied that he ‘was attending to the estate of Tillotson Brown, he (C.) asked who B. was, stating that he might nave seen him, but he knew Marshal Brown well. A question was here aske? witness if he had ever heard how Mrs. Brown came to take the name of Brown, when the counsel discussed the question as to whether he should disclose what he had received professionally. S.. Clark, of Georgetown College, testified that Marghal and Tillotson Brown entered the College in November, 1832, and left No- vember, 1633. ee ALEXANDRIANS GOING SouTH.—The past week has been one of painful excitement in this place, In consequence of the order for the deportation of persons to the South, as many of the citizens, mostly old residents, including effect.
