Grover’s TukaT«“R.—Mr. Charles Barron, Weil and tavorably known &s one of the most preminent members of Mr. Grover's fine stock company, will to-night take a benefit. This is the only benefit Mr. B_ has been tendered this season, and itis to be hoped that a well filled house will testify in unmistakeable terms how tuily they appreciate his talents and efforts. The bill’ is “The Drunkard,’ and “The Widow’s Victim.” CANTERBURY.—The attractions at this popu- lar resort at this time are very numerous, and notwithstanding the warm weather a large au- dience is always in attendance. Apart from the enjoyment of witnessing fine performances, those who attend at Canterbury always find the hall cool and well ventilated. Another fine concert hall bill this evening, the whole concluding with the drama of “Jack Shep- pard.” V ARieTies.—Agnes Sutherland nightly en- tertains with songs at this rgsort. She has naturally a good voice, and has taken pains to cultivate it, and is thus enabled to please all by her melody. The other performers are also good. Johnny Wild, Denny Gallagher, | and the most prominent members of the com- pany will appear in the drama, « Six Degrees of Crime.” METROPOLITAN HALL.—A fine operatic en- tertainment consisting of duetts, trio and Scenes, and whole acts from the most popular English, German and Italian operas is nightly offered at this hall, whichis a very popwar Tesort among lovers of operatic music. oe The Case of Mrs. Emily Wiley, versus Marshall Brown. Crncurt Court—Chief Justice Cartter. After our report closed yevterday, the coun- sel for Mrs. W. read a number of letters, which were admitted as evidence, written by Mrs. Wiley, then ‘Miss Brown, Mrs. Brown, Thos. ©. Bell, principal of the Newark ( Del.) School, Miss Bell and others, dated during the years “Il, ‘42%, 43 and “44. The letters of Mrs. W. were addressed “Dear father,” and those of the others speak ot her as the child of Mr. Brown. Mrs. Brown's letters are addressed to her “dear daughter,” and generally close with “Your father joins me in loye to you;” and one contains a postscriptin Mr. B.’s wri- ung. Tee counsel for Mrs. Wiley here closed; and Mr. Bradiey, on opening the case for the detense, stated what he expected to prove by respectable witnesses; that he would show that Colonel Larned took Mrs. Brown in a hack to Mrs. Dodd's; that she passed as his niece in that house; that she visited a house of ill-fame while in Baltimore; that Mr. T. P. Brown never darkened the threshold of the honse of Ann Simms or Mrs. Weeden; that in Baltimore she passed as Elizabeth Reed; that she lived on B street nearly two years, and during that time Mr. Brown never darkened the door; that she was the mistress of Mr. Brown; that in 1839, \when Emily was four years old, she introduced Mr. Brown for the first time as her new beau; when the child Georgiana died, he would show that the date of the birth and death and burial of the child was furnished to Mr. Donn by Mrs Brown, and by his direction a stone cutter was emploved to put the inscription on the stone; that she had declared that Mr. T. P. Brown Was not the father of thé child: that he would prove that at the tirae Mr. Brown was visiting he was at a boarding school in another ; that he would prove by Mr. Brown’s own ‘tement that he was not the tather of the child; that the marriage announcement of John Wiley and Emily Brown, was that Emily was the daughter of Elizabeth Brown; that when the remains of Georgiana were remoyed from the Con sional Burying Ground. a new inscrip- tion Was put upon the tombstone, and the name of Tillotson P. Brown was not upon it; that of Elizabeth Brown was. Capt. George Wilson, Sworn. Witness resides in Baltimore. In the winter of 1832 or °33 Liz- zie Phillips was stopping at Peacock’s, in Bal- umore, as a chambermaid. Mary Simms, & woman who has evidently been one of the fast ones, was swern, and tes- tified that she has known Mrs. Brown 25 or 30 years; that she came to board at witness's sis- ier’s, on the avenue. Mr. Brent objected, on the ground that the testimony was purely collateral, and did not relate to the paternity of the child nor affect the credit of Mrs. Brown as a witness. He argued the point, citing authorities, and in the course thereof admitted that the evidence of Mrs. Brown had negatived the idea of a mar- riage between her and Mr. B. until January, 135%, and proved that prior thereto there was enly a promise of marriage at some future time’ Therefore the proposed evidence was not admissible to rebut a marriage ata period when it wis not claimed, and there was no other purpose for which it could be legally admitted. The Court decided that it was not admissible on the question of paternity of the child, but was admissible to negative the idea of a mar- riage de facto at the ume. She came to the house in a stage trom Balti- more, with a man who she id was Col. Larned, but witness neyer him. She passed under the name of Li Read. Wit- } does not remember what y it was when she arrived. Witness is certain that the man was not Tilletson Brown, who she knew as well as she did herself. She never saw Tillotson Brown at her sister’s house, but had seen him in another houses and on the street. She thought at the time that Col. Larned was a married man and did not wish to be seen, as he kept himself close. Every man who goes to such houses does not wish to be known. . Brown staid at witness’ sister's house days and left, but she does not know e wentto, At the time she left she enciente. Sarah McGann.—Witness resides in New | and knews Mrs. Brown, who she be- came acquainted with in 1836. She was then living in a house on B street, near the old de- pot; there were two small bricks adjoining. Witness stopped at Mrs. B.’s from the fall of “36 fo the following spring, and returned the iollowing fall, stopping until the spring of "33. She stopped at the house a short time about a year afterwards while on her way to South Carolina. Witness was quite intfinate with ¥ B., and she was often in her room. Mrs. B. had two children, one of whom died in °37. In speaking of the children Mrs. B. said that the one who died was the childof John White, of Kentucky; and of the other (Emily) as the child of Dr. Miller, of Bultimore. Witness first saw Tillottson Brown at the house of Mrs. B. and Mrs. B. spoke of him as her new By Mr. Brent.— Witness is now married and resides in New York, where she is living an honest, virtuous life. She was not married when she first became acquainted with Mrs. B, and it she had beer she would not have gone toher house. She was married to Mr. McGann about two years since. McG., at the time she stopped at Mrs. Brown's, boarced at the hotel. Mrs. B. was passing under her present name at thattime. Mrs. B. in 36 was nursing her babe, and was a truly devoted mother. On certain nights a gentieman would stop with Mrs. B., who she said was Mr. White. Witness thonght that Mrs. B. set great store by the child, because it was Mr. White’s, and appeared to think that he would do some- thing for her. Mr. W. ws the Speaker of the House of Representatives at the time. One of the children was called Georgianna White, and the other, who she said was Dr. Miller’s, «‘Lit- tle Ellen.” Witness saw Dr. Miller in Balti- more alterwards, and, on looking at him, saw a resemblance between the two, and thonght that he should adopt thechild. Witness never saw Mr. Hardin, but has heard Mrs. B. say that she supposed he had left her because she took up with White. Witness was ‘sorry to say that she (witness) had deceived the world; but she was now moving in good society, and her adopted daughter, who was with her at Mrs. B.'s, also. Mrs. Deborah Griggsby.— W itness’ maiden name was Easton, but she is now married and trying to live a virtuous life. She did not recollect that Tillotson Brown in ’36 and "37 was a con- stant visitor to Mrs. Brown’s; could not say that he had a female friend he visited con- stantly. He visited her house sometimes. She wad understood that he visited Mrs. Brown. Mr. B. and witness had a personal difficulty once, but it was not concerning Mrs. Brown. PES Anotien MvurnpEer.—Yesterday afternoon another murder was committed in the northera secuion Of the city. It appears that about eaven o'clock three soldiers belonging to company F, 13th New York cavalry, passed up Seventh street, and stopped at George Esher’s lager | beer saloon, on Seventh street between M and NN, where they bad a quarrel, one of them refusing to return with his companions to the camp; and when ep the pavement in front of | the house Michael Comeford drew his revolver | and fired four shots, the first passing through the lower portion of the deceased’s (Phillip Riley's) uniform; the second between his legs, striking Mr. Ridley, & neighbor, who wus near by, in the foot; and the third the deceased, in the right breast, abont three inches from the colar bone. The deceased, who had by this time fallen, threw up his hands, exclaiming, «My God, I am shot!’ and died in a few | moments. Comeford immediately walked off, but was arrested by officer Cook, who happened | to be near by, and taken to the Third Ward sation. On the rat down the prisoner said that if he had not killed Riley he was sorry for it, as he had done his best to kill him; and he was willing to take the consequences. He declared that Riley had repeatedly pped him in the face. Both the parties are Irish- men and fine cemng men. Shortly after the ocourrencce Justice John H. Prentiss. The latter reported the fact to the officer of the day, (Capt. Geo. Rhodes.) and asked that the | man should be put in the guard-house. Capt. very insulting, said be would not leave, and that he could thrash any officer or any twenty men in the camp, when Capt. Rhodes called the guard and ordered the sergeant’s arrest. ‘The sergeant then defied the guard to take him, and running towards Capt. Rhodes pulled the sword of the latter from its sheath, and made a puss with it at Capt. R., the sword piercing his coat, vest and undershirt. The sergeant of the guard was also struck with the sword while attempting to make the arrest; and Captain Rhodes, seeing no other way of quelling the disorder, ordered the guard to shoot, which order was obeyed by the corporal of the guard, who shot the disorderly soldier, the ball enter- ing the body just below the heart. The wounded man was conveyed to Columbian Hospital, where the services of medical men were secured; and at last accounts he was alive, and gave evidence of recovery. hen the wounded man became sensible, he justified the shooting, and said that, had he been in charge of the guard, he would haye acted in a similar manner. 2 ee MILITARY MEETINGS.—The President's Mounted Guard 1s in the field again. On last night they had a spirited meeting, and twenty- nine new members were received. They hold another meeting to-night. By the announcement elsewhere it will be seen that the George C. Thomas Guards offer extra inducements for enlistment. The ranks will doubtless fill up speedily. The yeteran National Guards, it will be seen, hold a meeting to-night, asdoubtless will other city companies. Phe military spirit is rapidly mounting to the pitch it reached when the call for three months men was so promptly an- swered in this city. a Cxrropopy.—There is no part of the human frame whose condition has more infinence on our comfort er discomfert, or which requires more care | snd attention than the feet.
