In the first district the male grammar, Mr. ‘Thomson teacher, is to be examined by Mr. R. Ricketts; female grammar, Miss Middleton teacher, by Mr. R. T. Morsell; male inte me- diate, Mrs. Rodier teacher, by Mr. J. O. Wil- son. Tn the second district the male grammar, Mr. Wilson teacher, by Mr. M. H. Miller. fe- male grammar, Miss Boggs teacher, by Mr. C. H. Utermehle; male intermediate, Mrs Myers teacher, by Mr. W. J. Rhees. Si ae CrimInaL Court, Judge Fisher.—On Satur day, Peter Carrico, indicted tor an assault and battery on his wife, submitted his case, and was fined five dollars, and gave bail to Keep the peace. Caleb Shreve was convicted of the larceny of 2 pair of pants from T.S. Cole, and sentenced to two years in the Albany penitentiary. James Wilson, alias Smith, was found guilty of stealing the coat of the same party, and sentenced to three years in the penitentiary. i Louis Laz:rra, indicted on four counts for } forging and attempting to pass counterteit fifty- | cent postage currency, was tried. The full particulars of this case haye already been pub- lished. A yerdict was rendered of guilty en the fourth count of the indictment, and the prisoner was sentenced to one year’s imprison- ment in the Albany penitentiary. Sie Sy A Horse Case.—On Friday, Mr. Paxton, of Georgetown, went to the First Ward station with @ warrant for the arrest ef a man for stealing his horse, which was missed some two months since. Mr. Paxton stated that the horse was in possession of & wagon-master on Rock Creek. Officers Stuard and Crump start- edout with Mr. P., and found the horse near Kalorama, grazing. Mr. P. having proved it to be his, Justice Drury turned it over to him. Inashort time, Mr. W. Wroe, a wagon-mas- ter, made his appearence, and stated that the horse had been in his possession; that he had drawn it from the Government, and that the officers had taken it out of his camp; and having reported the facts to Col. Baker, the dJatter ordered the officers toappear before him, which they did, and the case was referred to Capt. Tompkins, A. Q.M., who affirmed Jus- tice Drury’s action, it being proven to Capt. T.’s satisfaction that the animal was 4 con- demned one. ie ee UNPLEASANT Fix voOR A STEADY-GOING | side, between E and’F streets south. Margzizp Man.— Yesterday, Mrs. Marshal Pettitand A. Virginia Taylor were arrested by Officers J. F. Kelly and Crown charged with enticing married men to their house for pur- poses of prostitution. They were taken before Justice Giberson, where the complainant, Jas. Fisher. told a sorrowful tale of the goings on At the said house, Mrs. Pettit being the wife of a teamster and A. V. Taylor a widow and sis- ter to Mrs. Fisher. Fisher says that the party have succeeded in estranging his wife from him, causing a determination on his part to separate from her. Justice Giberson fined the women $5.5S each for prostitution. Fisher is 2 laboring man, and has served twenty years in the U. S. regulars, last in the 4th infantry. ‘When his term expired he married to settle in ‘Washington in October, and this trouble affects him seriously. SSS Row tn SwamPoopie.—Yesterday atter- noon a party of young men tooka drive, and visited various places inthe Fourth Ward, and finally brought up near the corner of Third and H streets. The policemen of the beat, pa- trolmen Crown and Fuss, seeing evidence of a coming riot, stopped the hack, and undertook to arrest the party, who resisted, and a fight ensued. Officer Crown was knocked down, kicked and disarmed, but regaining his arms he succeeded in securing John Cronian, who Was evidently the leader, and others. A large number of citizens assembled, and some efthem aided the officers. The rioters struggled hard to get away; but five of them were secured and taken to the station house for trial this morn- ing. Twoescaped. The riot caused great ex- citement in that section of English Hill. * ncn Escare AND RECAPTURER.— Yesterday morn-’ ing, as roundsman Buill, of the First Ward, wus conyeying John Welch to the workhouse in &@ carryall, the vehicle broke down, and they returned to the station, when the necessary repairs were made. Welch in the meantime prevailed upon the officer to take him to his house, on Twenty-second street, where he said he could get the amount of his fine, and they proceeded to the place designated. The officer got out and rapped at the door, and the prisoner availed himself of the epportunity and es- ecaped. The officer atonce started in pursuit. and after a chase through a number of wagon camps he succeeded in recapturing him, and Welch was then conveyed safely to the farm. stil DES A Botp Turer.—Thursday, Officer Mona han went to the honse of a contraband with a search warrant, to recover some goods alleged to be secreted there, and a man named John J. Conlan accompanied. him. The search was, however, unsuccessful. and the parties left the house. A short time afterwards a watch belonging toone Randall Green was missed, and the parties went to see the officer in rela- tion to the matter, and he in turn, arrested Conlan on suspicion of stealing the watch, and found it upon his person. He was taken be- fore Justice Stration, and committed to jail. a Ix tHe Wroxac Hovse.—On Thursday Morning last, the servant of Mr. Marquis, re- siding on K street,near Seventeenth, on coming down stairs, discovered @ man in the house, and informed Mr. M., whe came down and collared him as he wasin the act of taking a clock from the mantle. He was handed over to officer Watts, who took him before Justice Drury, where he proved to be a teamster named James Akers, and he was sent to the work- house.
