_THE EVENING STAR. THE DEFENSES OF PORT HUDSON. ‘}rom the Missonri Repablican.j Port Huceon is about twenty-five miles | above Raton Rouge, on the east side of the Mis- savsippi. It is ata point where & bend forms ! aimost a rightangie, thue completely com- manding the river both ways. On the north, for a disiance of eight miles, itis protected by an impassuble swamp, which is bounded on the side nearest Port Hudson by Thompsoa’s Creek, ‘he bither bank of which is a pracipi tous bluff, crowned by an entrenched abattis. ‘This abuttieextends from the river eastward, Ul it joins a veries of entrenchments nine or tem miles in extent, sweeping to the south ina semi-circle till they rest upon the river on the erest of a range of high bile. The country in Ling, And possesses Many Reatural tages in favor of the enemy. Between Baton Rouge and Port Hudson is a lon: etretch ef territory difficult of access ut ull times, be- img covered by dense woods and undergrowth, and abounding in bayousand marshes. The place, doth by nature and art, is unquestion- ably one of great strength. The southern pev- ple in the vicinity callit their Gibraltar, and protess to believe it io be impregnable. ‘The water defenses ot Port Hudson are said to consist of eight batteries, numbering between twenty andthirty guns. Oncof these batteries as stationed ona bluff eighty feethigh. Another ia planted justbelow the mouth of Rhee ote ereek. The most of the guns are 24a, 32's ard 42°e, but there are one or two of 120-pounders. ‘The Jand deienses were chiefly bullt after the advance of the Union forces t@ Baton Rouge. Tuey mount in all seme Boe | or forty cuns, some of them of very heavy calibreyand,#: ad- dition to these, there are at least four fieid bat- ceriee, which can be readily moved to any part of the works. The position seems to be entirely. enclosed in & series of fortifications of the most elaborate and formidable character, but whether: there are any interior lines remains to be re- vealed. The probability, however, is thai he rebels would scarcely rely on @ eingle line, and that the exterior entrenchments include several others, as was found to be the case at Vicksburg. Indeed, the general plan of the defeusesat Port Hudson appears to be the same as at the point just mentioned, the only deviations being such ‘ns required by the versions in the surface of the country. Port Pudeon district 1s coramanded b: Major ten. Franklin Gerdner, a veteran soldier and an able officer, who was azsigred to duty there | on the 27th of Decembetia«t. THE SITUATION AT VICKSBURG. {From the Louisville Journal.} Captain L. B. Dunham, of this cit) was jos | returned from Vicksburg, and on day last { visited Gen. Grant, st his headquarters im the} year of that place. A general feeling of confi- dence existed that our troops would be enabled to hold their position and eventually compel the eapitulation of the Rebel etrongheld. It could be stermed at any tine in two hours, but the sacrifice of fe which that course would [require renders it prudent and humane to continnethe ‘siege and force a surrender. The works in the center, under Gen’s. Logan and Quimby, ate only one hundred and ten to twenty yards from the Centederate batteries, so close that the combatants can converse with each other, and throw out words of deflance. A very heavy battery cfsixty-fuur pounders ‘was in course of con<trnetion ander Col. Nor- ton, which, when completed. it is expectsd, ‘Will be abie to batter down ths opposing works in a very few honors. Gen. Sherman is om the right, and his approaches to the beleagured city Rave been advanced as close as those of Logan, and he is ereciing addilional thirty-two pound batteries. Gen.
