HakPER's Ferry, June 14.—The rebel raid, or rather invasion, which hus been so Song talked about, is becoming an earnest fact, as youalready know. Itis dificult, in the eon- fueion and excitement prevailing here, to aseer- tain the real facts, or to separate the true from the ecore of fulse and exaggerated reports fly- ing atont. There is no doubt, however, of the one great fact, that & force of considerable magnitude, under command of General Ewell, isin the Valley, and that the rebels haye con- ducted the movement with their usual celerity Qnd skill, and are evidently determined upon &@ bold movement. ‘Theirmain ferer, under General Ewell in person, marehed directly on Winchester, with the view of surrounding and besieging Gen Milroy’s forces there. The main body is said to have numbered 13,000men. The whole rebel force engaged in the movement is thought to be about 25,000. Gen. Milroy bad strongly forti- fied his position, and was able to hold the rebels at bay during ihe whole of Saturday and Sunday. Keport eaye that in eeveral attacks on the works the rebels were eeverely repulsed, and lost heavily. Finding that the enemy were heavily reinforcing and marifesting a urpore to tho: oughly invest the Place, gen. ilrey determined whilst it was in his rr to cut his way outand join the forees ut Her- per’s Ferry. The movement was successfully executed, but not withouteonsiderable fighting, in which our troopeacquitted themeel ves well. General Milroy prepered for the movement during Sunday night, and at three o'clock ibis morning commenced to move out on the road toward Harper's Ferry. The rebels soon dis- cerned the movement and followed. A run- ning fight eneued all the way from Winchester to within a few miles of the Ferry. So far as the facts are now known every attack of she rebele was repulsed; though not without con- siderable loes on our tle for which a fall nalty was exacted. ‘he sound of the artil- , Jery firing during the morning gradually ap- prneching: Harper's Ferry, indicated that Gen. ilroy was falling back. und an intense inter- eet was of course excited. About noon the head of the retreating column reached Hall- town, three wiles trom the Ferry, and couriers soon after announced that Gen. Milroy had brought nearly the whole of his force, between nine and ten thonsand men, ssfeiy in, and that he saved nearly the whole of his guns and trains. Those inthe works which could not be moved, were spiked. A strong supporting force was thrown from Harper's Ferry, bat judging trom the cessation of the firing the rebels apparently concluded that they had been foiled, and gave up the pursuit, The troops from Martinsburg, under General | Tyler. cogether with those from North Moun- tain, under orders from Gen. Schenck, naving sent off all their stores on the trains, prepared to retrent on Harper’s Ferry on Saturday eve- ning. Fverything being removed, about seven o clock in the evening he took up his line of | parch, and had some slight skirmishing, in | which our troops behaved very well. Nothing ot yalue was left behind, and the whole affair | was managed well, his troops reaching Har- j per’s Ferry early on Sunday morning. The first approach of the rebels was on Ber- \ ryville, which was held as an ou:post of Win- { chester by Gen. McReynolds. His force num- bered about 3,000 1 cluding the6th Mary- land regiment, Co 1 Horne, and Captain j Alexander's Ist Maryland butery. Berryville ; is about half way between Snicker's Gap and Winchester. Longatreet’s rebel vorps is said to have advanced on thissmall command from Sticker’sG heldin check for nearly six hours on Saturday, when they were oyer- whelmed by eufierior numbers, and fell back on Winchester. The (th Maryland regiment and the Ist Mary- i Iand battery bore a large share of the heavy | fphting at this point, and suffered severely. Capt. Alexander, with his hatwry, snpporied by the Gth, had charge of the works, and re- j pulsed th with great { hier ropnd autil H ance of ten. Reynold’s troops Bad i for Winel and had made good ; their retreat, wher coming on and the closing are ad them in yreat force, they ompelied don their guns and iryland was cnt up and & staail number escaping, and der and Lieut. Lvane, of the artil- i -n men, were all of his tine com- i d who reached Harper's Ferry. Anum! | of the missing were taken prisoners { Gen. Kenly reports these commands as hay ing | distinguished themselyes beyond all praise. They did t yield until th y broughs thorty pieces cf cannon to bear upon them. | WHEREAROVTS OF THE REL VASION OF ] MARYLAND. Monocacy Juncrion, 2 P. —While there { isnodonbt that the mma force of the rebels which had besieged Winches+r are still in Virginia, it is generally believed ¢ the cay- alry ard artillery, under Jenkins, who had the fight with Gen. Tylvrat Martinsbarg, have s+d into Maryland, either above or at Wil- it is asserted here quite contident- 1 cavalry were in Hagerstown at 5 his morning, bntthe only positive fact I have been able to learn is that the telegraph { line between Frederick and Hagerstown has | ceased entirely to work. As there was no | Siorm to damage the line, the inference is that it has been cnt, and of course that the rebels | have done it. It was @'soreporied at Harper's | Ferry thatea small force of rebel cavalry had been in Sharpsburg. The stage which left Ha- gerstown early this morning, passing through Middletown, arrived at the usual time, having met with no interruption; nothing having been seen or heard of the rebeis along the turnpike. The good people of Frederick hays been in a stale of great excitement to-day and yesterday. Hundreds of the citizens have made prepara lions to leate the town, and be: ier j #blenumber wentto Baltimore in trains to-day, other having gone in various directions in pri- vate vehicles teward the Pennsylvania line. The free colored populution are in great per- turbation, fearing that they will be carried into Dixie, and sold as slaves, by the rebels. | They crowded two or three burthen ears that j Went down to-day, and it is probable there | will be a general flight of them from this sec- i tion of the country. The Government has re- Moved its surplus commissary stores from | Frederick, and cleared the hospitals of all pa- | tients who could be moved. H } | } i | The Baltimore Sun of this morning says: 4 The salon pets the substance ef a official ispatch received from Gen. Mil b; Gen. Schenck Jast night: BES Oy aaa “The fortifications were inyestei by about 15,000 Confederates, with twenty pieces of ar- tillery. This force, after a desperate conflict, carried the outer works by storm about 6 o'clock on Sunday evening. Gen. Milroy spiked his heavy guns and withdrew after night in the direction of Martinsburg. He marched about four miles unmolested, when he was attacked by an overwhelming force. A desperate fizht of two hours iuollowed, when Gen. Milroy cut his way through, and arrived at Harper's Ferry with a suppos: d Joss of not over 2,006 killed, wounded and missing.” The road is now open through Martinsburg toMaryland and Pennsylvania, While cavalry raids may be executed in those Suates, it is thought impos-iole for the main body of the Confederates to pass over and leave the heavy foree under Gen. Tyler at Harper's Ferry in their rear. The belief last night, however, among the military men was that Gen, Ewell’s force has crossed at Williamsport and pro- ceeded to invest Harper’s Ferry, This, how- ever, Was only surmise, as no official informa tion of such a movement had been received. The latest advices last nizht were that the railroad and telegraph lines between this. cit and Harper's Ferry were stall uninterrupted. Brig. Gen. B. F. Kelly passed through this city lastnight, en route for Grafton, by the war of Pittsburg, &c. He will assnme commandof | the forves in that section of Virginia. Governer Bradford arrived here from. An- napolis at § o'clock yesterday afternoon. He bad a lengthy private interview with Majer Gen. Schenck, the nature of which did not transpire. It is thought his proclamation call- ing for ten thousand volunteers, pursuant to the call of the President, will be iseued to-day. His Honor Mayor Chapman, with a commit- tee of ihe a cepnell. also bad an interview with General eck last evening, looking to the protection of the city, &c. B77 They have a cheerful horse railroad ia Hartford. One terminus is at the State Prison and the other at the cemetery. One would pre- ter to be @ way passenger rather than & through passenger,
