‘LOCAL NEWS. AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT. Gurover’s ty ere Western to- might takes & benefit, an: appear as “La po oth * in the play of “The Spy of Saint Marc ;” and as “Madame Manette, "in the hu- morous comedietta of “Mischief Making.” This 13 an admirable bill, and, as the fair beneficiare is an immense fayorite, the house will doubt- less be crowded. . CANTERBURY.—There is no place of amuse- ment in this city more deserving the patronage of the fun-loving than Canterbury Hall. The performers are all good, being selected with care, aud the hall itself is one of the coolest and most comfortable in the city. Annetta Galletti, Kate Pennoyer, M’lles Marie and Augusta, and all the favorites sppear to-night in 8 splendid bill. VARIETIES.—A good bill of song, dance, and Ethiopian eccentricity is announced for this evening’s entertainment at the Varieties; aud | all the old favorites, including Nellie Howard,’ Harry Leslie, W.S. Budworth, &c., will ap- pear. Bene Leslie will perform some of his thrilling tight-rope feats. Carncross & Dixgy’s MINSTRELS opened last night at Odd Fellows’ Hall, to « good house. They performed a programme replete with melody and fun, and made some telling hits, Their second performance will be given this evening, and all who would pass 2 pleas- ant evening should not tail to visit Odd Fel- lows’ Hall. Crecvs.—This is announced as the lastnight of the combined Circus, and therefore all who - would witness fine ring and equestrian per- ftormsnces shonld avail themselves of the op- portunity atonce. “Dick Turpin,” will again be performed. METROPOLITAN HALL.—This place of aranse- ment is situated on Pennsylvania avenue, be- tween 1th and 12th street; and an opera com- pany will, tor a short season, entertain with’ scenes, duetts, trios and whole acts of the most pular Italian, German and English operas. he company is a good one. Bwwx1z Lanps.—The sixth and last lecture of the course on Bible Lands will be delivered this evening at the Thirteenth street Baptist Church, by Rey. Dr. Samson, LecTuRE ON HEALTH.—Dr. Landis’ second } lecture on health, in behalf of the Sons of Tam- perance, will be delivered thisevenmg at Tem- perance Hall. 2S Ses SErENADE.—Last might a number of the friends of the recently elected officers of the Corporation assembled near the northern mar- ket, and proceeded to serenade them. The pro- cession being headed by Prosperi’s band in an open car, iu which were also Messrs. R. War- ren and A. Columbus, who had the management of the affair. After the band came seyeral car- Tiages and wagons containing the friends of the candidates, and the whole party proceeded to the First Ward. The first stopping place was the residence of Mr. Douglass, Register, on 22d street, when after appropriate music by the band and repeated calls, that gentleman made his appearance and thanked them for the comphmentand theirsuf- frages, assuring them that in the future, as in the past, his aim would be to so discharge his duties as to meet the approbation of his fellow- citizens. The recent contest had been one of the most singular that has ever been witnessed by the people of this city. When he was elected two years ago it was solely on account of his unconditional unionism and for his warm and hearty support of the Government in all the means they had adopted or intended to adopt to put down this uncailed-for rebellion, but in the late contest it had been thought by some persons claiming to be the only “ Simon pure” friends of the Administration and Government that the present incumbents were notsufficient- dy loyal. They had also applied the term « cop- perhead” to such as proposed to support them, and breught out sn opposition ticket, styling it the “ unconditional Union and Administration ticket,” hoping by this means to get rhe Admin- istration to interfere in the municipal affa the city; but in their plans they had been sig- nally defeated, both by the Administration and by the citizens. Notwithstanding the Opposi- —_ Tue Ssventu Steeet Passencer Cans.— Mr. Editor :—1 wish to.call the attention of the managers of the city:railroad to the anconve- nience suffered by the people of the Seventh Ward from the present system of ruaning the cars at night from the avenue to the river. From nine to twelve o'clock at night, the cars, instend of being run on time, as the company’s charter reqv..-6, make but-half hourly Tap and the consequence is that epeargese and children ts well, are obliged to stand in the open street in 11 weathers, in the tedious intervals of the trips. The disagreeable experience of entering car after car as they come down Seventh street, only tobe told “we don’t go below the Ave- nue,’ is a familiar one by this time to all Islanders; and I lave seen hundreds of peo- ple, after going through this tantalizing pro- cess till fairly tired out, give the whole thing up be an unmitigated nuisance, and plod home on foot. The single excuse offered for this state of | things—that “he cars running after 9 p. m. are not always filled—is utterly invalid, as it is notorious that the south Seventh street line is the best paying route in the city; and I cer- tainly, in many trips by the cars, have never yet been able to get anything better than a Reecente seat, so crowded are they usually rough the day. There is no danger that the company -will peankrapt itself, even supposing i Ges, does occasionally run throngh lightly loaded. I am sure that the managers of the road, who have certainly shown, in many ways, 2 disposition to accommodate the public, need only to haye their attention called to the griev- ance here complained of, to rectity it. As none of them reside im this part of the city, it has probably not fallen under theireye. IsLanp. peak elton Storz Rospep.—This morning it was dis- { covered that the store ef John V. Bryan, on the corner of Third street east and Maryland avenue had been entered by foreing open the front door with a chisel, and about one hundred dollars worth of tobacco and cigars and fifty dollars in money stolen. The suspicions of the police fell on certain parties who had been seen in the neighborhood during the evening, and ac- cordingly a search warrant was obtained, and the premises of John Sullivan near the depot ‘was searched, but no goods were found. chisel with a broken edge which filled the marks on the store door was found, and Officers Simonds and Nally arrested Sullivan, Wm. McCarthy, and poe Roambel, who were taken before Justice Ferguson, who holdsthem for a further examination. ee PrisonErs or WAR.—The following named prisoners of war reached this city yesterday, and were committed to the Central Guard- house by order of Captain Todd: Powhatan Jones, Forty-seventh Va; W. J. English, Cook's rebel battery: J Allensworth, Ninth Va. cay.; and Elijah S. Patterson, Forty- seventh Va. These prisoners will be paroled for exchange. _———— RETURNING HomME.—Yesterday the 37th N. Y., 400 men, Col. Hayman, and the 3Sth N. Y., 326 men, Col. Allison, arrived from the tront and proceeded homewards to be mustered out of service. ——— HovsE PAINTERS.—We call the attention of the journeymen house painters to the adver- tisement announcing a meeting to be held this evening at Temperance Hall. ——.__—_.
