LOCAL NEWs. i AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT. Gaoven's THEATER Buckstone’s charming scenic play, entitled the. + Flowers of the For- ect, or the Wild Zingara,” with Mise Western as “Cynthia,” will be performed to-night. On @ former occasion, this play attracted ani mense audience, and it gave such entire satis- faction that there is no doubt bat the house Will be crowded this evening also. CANTERBURY.—Manager Sinn is indefati- gxbdie in his efforts to please, and therefore, in Addition to the dancing of Galletti, Pennoyer, Marie and Augusta, the singing of Eva Brent, and the Ethiopian eccentricities of Eagan and others, he also introduces upon his boards the drama. “ Dick Turpin” will be performed to- night, and in an admirable manner; for Man- ager Sinn has the material for it, and has made & good cast of characters. Vauretixs.— The bill announced for this evening at this popular resort, is alsoa good | one, and all the old and favorite performers, including Nellie Howard, Lizzie Francis, W. 5S. Budworth, Harry Leslie, & replete with melody, and the Erhiopian delin- eations remarkably amusing. Cincus.—Large and delighted crowds are the order at the RNixon-Macarte Circus. “Dick Turpin,” will be performed to-night again. inert among the performers here is “Herr Cline,” of world-wide fame, the graceful per- former on the tight rope, whose astonishing feats never fail toelicit the most unbounded applause. The performance is good through- out. Carncnoss anv Dixey’s Mixatrers will open to-night at Odd Fellows’ Hall; Seventh street, and for a brief season will entertain our citizens with their delightful Ethiopian svirees, producing all the latest novelties, sinzing the newest and jnost melodious songs, anc giving side-splittingburlesques and plantation scenes. This troupe is known farand wide as one of the best now before the public. * DIGNATION DEMONSTRATION OF DISFRANCHISED VOTERS. a They Rally to the Number of Thirty-seven. a ER a Ex-Candidate Richards among the Number ee ee The tollowing advertisement appeared con- spicuously ip the Chronicle ot yesterday morn- ing, and the Republican of the afternoon: “ Disfranchised Voters.—All distranchised yo- ters are requested to meet at the National Union Reading Rooms to-night at 3 o’clock, for the purpose of instituting measures of redress.” Ats o'clock, when we entered the room, the meeting was not yet organized, there being, by actual count, thirty-seven persons in theroom, and this number was not increased during the evening. Prominent among the thirty-seven was Mr. A. U. Richards, the candidate for Col- Jector run by the “Uneonstitutional Union” party agaist the Unconditional Union party on Mondiy last. It would thus appear that he, too, Was disfranchised, as well as Mr. Z. Richards, Capt. Darling, of New York; Mr. John T. Clements, jr., of Missouri, and Mr. Frank Myers, of Michigan, (of Jonn Brown and Jesus Christ paralelliem notoriety) who were present. Perhaps twenty of the thirty-seven were con- eregated makno in the center of the roomin brisk conversation, but a pall seen thrown over the life of their discussion when it was discovered that an “internal Stor re- _porter” was present, Presently, after an agitated confab, it was hinted to us that the affair was not exactly in- tended as a public meeting; but as we saw representatives of ether papers sitting quite cemtortably in our vicinity, we indicated ur- banely our purpose to tall back on our re- served rights, and be counted in. There was 2 buzz of dismay. mught be manipulated with cooked up reports of “tremendous gatherings” and “unbounded | enthusiasm,” but not the Stey—not much! «D—n the Star!” Capt. Darling strode away toa window seat, aad soothed his perturbed spirits with 2 tra- grant Hayana, and the various members of the Council of Twenty commenced to meander about the hall, singly or in couples, as if hoping while in pedestrian exercise to gather inspiration as to how to selieve themselves of the ban of disfranchisement by any method short of the disagreeable one ot getting legally registered. Some wonder was expressed as to where the balance of the 4,000 were who “would have elected Richards had certificate voting been allowed.” It was painfully evident that (de- ducting the 37 present) there were 3,63 of the distranchised who didn’t care a darn about sustaining the glorious privilege of voung on certificate. At half-past nine o’clock, the squad getting outof heart, concluded to wait no Jonger for the delinquent 3,063, the lights were blown ont and the disfranchised returned to their homes and their virtuous pillows. The following conversation gives all the ad- ditional information within our knowledge : Reporter of Star.—Mr. Clements, when ara you going to organize the meetin; Mr. Clements.—“Oh, we have j had our meeting,” (alluding to the putting together ot beads in the center of the room.) “It was not iitended to be public: merely an informal af- tair for consultation to devise means and ra a fund to prosecute any suits that may be i: stimted.” ee . On Friday atternoon Judge Cartter sentenced | thirteen persons, who had been cenvicted of various crimes, to the penitentiary, among whom were the notorious Chas. McCarthy alias «French Charley,” and —— Broadhead, (who ‘will be remembered as one of the party engaged in the burning of Suse Prince's. house,on the isiaad, about two years since, and who broke jail once,) and they were sent back to the jail an charge of the bailiffs, but before they were delivered to the jailor McCarthy stepped through the hall ard escaped over the wall, but was recaptured, These prisoners were all placed m the first story, and the jailor, Mr. | medicines. Milburn, at once took measures to prevent their | es ping, by piacing all the guardson constant that-they were plotting to escape, and ty listen- i Saturday information reached the guards { ang it Was ascertained that the last convicted | parties, with others in other parts of the build- ing, some of whom had not been tried, were concerned in the scheme. By some means the guards on Sunday discovered that a key had been made (as is supposed by McCarthy) which Would unlock the doors of ali the cells on that tioor in which the penitentiary birds were con- fined, and was hid in McCarthy's cell, and it was found behind a small looking-glass set in the wall. The key was rather clumsily made, but on trial was found to answer the purpose very well. Atter the key was discovered irons were placed on the most desperate charac- ters, but on Monday those upon Mc. were | | and mice. Sold everywhere. Zound to be cut almost entirely through with a saw made with his knife. Another saw was also tound in the possession of another prisoner which had been made trom a truss worn by {| him. Heavy irons have been placed on McUar- thy and others, and they will be the subjects of the especial attention of the jailor in future. It seems that they had notall agreed upon one Plan of escape, some being in tayor of going out by way of the register of the furnace, and others proposing when the guards were being relieved to make an attack on them, and by force etlect an escapes. It is thought they were to make the attempt on Saterday, Sunday or Monday night. Others beside these parties ‘were undoubtedly in the plot, there being six or eight prisoners, who had not been tried, on the second floor, and about eizhteen convicted persons, who seem to have heard something of the doings, of McCarthy's gang, and, no doubt, were arranging to follow them, Through the vigileace of Mr. Milburn and the guards of the jail the plot was thus frustrated. These convicts, shout thirty in number, will, “we understand, be sentto Albany on Friday atternoon next.
