SS Desperate Assaults and Repulses. pie PSS A special correspondent of the New’Yerh Times furnishes some turther interesting de- tails of the fighting at Vicksburg up to and in- cluding the {th ult. We copy the following : THE STORMING OF THE WORKS. Abcut half-past one en Thursday, the 19th, Blair’s division was all in line, screened by the west of the first range of hills behind the rebel works. At precisely two o’clock the yarious regiments rose to their feet, and, with a tremendous cheer, started at donble-quick over the hill. Passipe over the crest of the first hill, behind which they lay, the charging column’ saw in tront of them another hill about 500 yards dis- To reach this it Was necessary to de- 2a slope for about 250 yards, the surface which was broken with deep gullies, and covered with falien timber. Down this our menrushed at couble quick, took » moment's rest at the bottom, and then commenced the step ascent beyond. This slope is covered with an abuttis of heavy timber, beyond which is a high rail-fence, then a ditch ten feet in ceptb, fhen a nearly perpendicularascentsome twelve feet in height, and then the rebel para- pet and rifie pits, protected by a strong stock- ade ten fert in height. The citches around the works werecommand- ed by an enfilading fire from guns mounted on trayerses, while tothe right and left were works and buildings and other objects, behind which |. rebel -harpshcoters conid find protection, and peur & destructive fire upon an enemy, after as well as before they had gained the interior of their main works. The {5th Infantry, 4th Virginia. 47th Ohio, 127th Filinois, Gth and Sth Missouri, and possi- bly one or two other regiments :ained the ditch. The conflict was “shortand dec sive.” Intwen- ty minutes the brigades had ascended the hill, and return, minus some S00 men. The revels mowed our gallant fellows down with grape, canister and musketry; they were protected: Me had nothing toshieid us from the deadly The 13th Infantry lost 23 men killed and wounded out of 24, among whom was its gal- lant commander, Capt. Washington, wounded and taken prisoner; Captains Yates and Ewing, Lieuts. How, Little, Bates, and cther officers severely wounded. Every brigade inthe charge had from three to five color-bearers shot dewn while advancing upon the rebel works. Three men of the i3th reguiars were killed while car- rying the colors. Capt. Yates then seized them, and wes in the act of planting them in the ditch, when he was shot in four places. He handed them to a sergeant, who was struck down by a cannon shot, when they were taken by Capt. Ewing, who, although wounded in the ac:, carried them safely from the field.’ ‘The brigade under General Thayer advanced, and fell back after suffering seme slight loss. Had McClernand advanced, as was intended, the capture of Vicksburg would undoubtedly have taken Piney at the time of the first assault, The next two days, Wednesday and Thurs- day, were in the main quiet, except in the case ofthe batteries. Not less than fifty guns, of sizes varying from six to thirty-pounders, were mounted in the rear of the city, at short dis- tances from the enemy’s works, and these from. dark till daylight, kept up a ceaseless “poun- dering” against the rebel defenses. On the river side the gun and mortar-boats were also © busy, thus fairly encircling the rebels wit thuider and fire; but they seemed to care very little for it, rarely replying to our fire, and seemingly paying us no other attention than keeping a vigilant watch upon the movement of our infantry. Wednesdzy and Thursday were given up t the artillery, and to getting our men ready for grr attack, which took place at 4 p.m. of rida) Itis Saesgieae to give particulars—it was in the main like the other, only on a larger scale, and it met with a repulse as decided as didthat of Tuesdsy. The usual character of assaults prevailed in this—some gallant neroes went u) the hill into the very ditches; others failed when half-way up; others never started, but scught safety from the deadly storm behind logs and trees: many started ame wentiorward in ieee? but: neyer-returned.
