Left Ont in the Cold. on gene Es As was indicated by the returns given from the different polls, in yesterday’s Siar, the Dixon Unconditional Union ticket was tri- umphant in every ward in the city, and in several of the wards the opposition sc y polled a respectable minority. Considgrable sympathy is felt for Mr. Rich- ards, who ia an estimable gentioman person- ally, as having been the victim in the extent of this crushing defeat of the injndicions man- agement of his advisers and b: ors. The re- sult, never deubttul trom the first, became only a ¢ stien of majorities when the at- undertaken in his be t—purely sneering dodge—to brand the pres: ued inecumnents and those who chose to suppert them, as of doubttul loyalty. The attempt made in the same interest to berate and deride the entire citizen community of Washington as a set of incompetent “hun- kers,” ‘fossils,’ e., too imbecile to atlend to their own ata + and needing the ap- of ers” as their «keep- Tegenerators” of municipal af- fairs generally, was also a singular piece of Political strategy to practice in » high-mind- ed community; and when on the heels of this, the Chrounicl+, sprung upon the city on the very morning of the election, when too late to be contradicted, a set of the most atrocious charpes possible against the Dixo! ticket, and further—and without the slight authority—assumed to speak for the adminis- tation, and to threaten its active displeasure Upon all who should dare to vote against the cal stagers here acquainted with the temper ot the people predicted that not only would every ™man thus villified be triumphantly elected, but that every ward in the city was irretrievably fost to the Richards cause, as indeed proved to be the case. At dusk, the light of bonfir rung up in Various parte of the city, telling the story of the Feeult; and soen after, the citizens, according to their custom on election night, made their | ‘way to the City Hall to hear the returns given out. ment was received with tremendous cheers. The reeultin Ward after Ward was announced, aad each announcement was the signal for the most unbounéed enthusiasm. About I) o'clock a hack drove swiftly up, and Alderman John / H. Semmes, of the Seventh Ward stepped out, 3nd announced the result in tha: ward, which was received with cheer after cheer, for Tom Loyd and other Seventh Ward candidates, and | “How about | emes of “Bully fer the S/ar.” Hen Kuight’s oath.” “Did it spile anything,” &c., &c. After the result bad been made known, Mr. Dixon’ was recognized in the crowd and was loudly cheered, when, calle, he appeared and spoke as follows: SPEECH OF MR. DIXON. After the vote of the First Ward had been | announced atftte two pulls a large number of the friends of Mr. Forsyth called on him &t his residence on G street, snd were hospitably re- ceived. Mr. F. and his lady were fally pre- pared for them, and for some hours every: ‘Was in the height of enjeyment. © Dr. Magruder being present was called on, and in a short speech congratulated them on the result. He remarked that there never was a time before that he could not make a speech, but he was embarrassed because the election seemed to be so one-sided. {Laughter.} The candidates of the Chronicle and Republican had been beaten, notwithstanding the great efforts that had been made in their behalf. He pro- ceeded to speak in humorousand characteristic style of the election campaign, and scattered telling hits right and left atter a way he has, | and was applauded to the echo. . —The pupils of the intermediate | Le a The crowd at a lute hour drew up in front of the house, and, atter giving three cheers for Mr. Forsyth and the ticket, proceeded to the residences of W. W. Rapley, Alderman elect, H. G. Wilson, Councilman elect, Mr. Douglass, Register, nd Thomas Donohoo, Councilman, whom they loudly cheered, and at the house of the latter they were invited in and hospita- bly entertained. Mr. Dixon, on his return to his residence, was complimented by a visitation of the hearty description thet the big-souled Navy Yurd boys know so well how w give. In the Seventh Ward there was 2 general rejoicing over the result, in view of the crusade mude against some of the prominent ward can- didates by the Chrunfe/e, and the attempt made | to give those attacks prominence by flooding the ward th that paper gratuitously dis- tributed. The successiul candidates were made much of by their friends, and some of them, | probably from this cause, got home ata later hour than their wives altogether approved. As an instance, however, of the good fellow- ship prevailing amongst citizens of all parties in this ward, we should add that the defeated candidates were amongst the earliest to pile blushing honors upon their sauce: ul com- petitors. Bally boys, but, as was said by ‘tother side of our ticket, they suffered from ‘bad com- un - . cae ® good-natured election generally, with the excepiion perhaps of some wordy équabbles in the Third and Fourth Wards, when certificate voters were rejected. As the Chronicle expressed the opinion that the de’ of R 2s due to the rejection of voter: not registered, it is proper to say that a careful tally made of all such rejected voters, show: that Dixon lost as many at least as Richards; j and thatif the latter had got every one of the inconsideratle number it would not have ef- fected the result in the slightest degree, not even in a single precinct age .
