“THE EVENING STAR. . REWS FROM LATE RICHMOND PA- PERS. Rebel Accounts of the Battle of Chencel- lersville. From late copies of Richmond papers the following ndditional news is gleaned: ‘The corr tot the Richmend Enqci- | i my to get of toeeasily. His whole force ought | hae been captured, or thas which ; erossed at Banke’ Ford. Why the failure to | eut off and capture a larger number than were brought in it is not in my power todictate. I { believe Gen. Lee expected a more brilliant | result. It was no fault of his that there was a | failure at any point; and whilst the credit be- | Jong: in common to and Jackson, up to the | ill-iated hour when Jackson received his ‘wound, it is but just to say that after that { period the whole credit belonged to Gen. Lee, | mot only for his planning, but for kay Bi con- venient distance, and watching with his own eye to the execution, in so far as he could make | i succeseful. The enemy ought to have been | attacked at two o’clock on Monday evening, | May 4th. The reason, however, which defer- H red it ustilsix is not proper in the judgment of your correspondent to be communicated. ‘When in an sfterday, gets writes the rea- Son, its sufficiency will be readily acknowl- | edged. Just here, let me urge upon the newspapers, as the organs of public opinion, to insist that Generai Lee shall never hereafter again ex- his valuable life to the missiles of death. tis ‘unnecessary ; and now that Jackson has fallen, this, our great hero and chieftain, owes it to us, 1f not to himse)f, to be where the shock of batile cannot reach. Temthousand, or even one hundred thousand men slain in battle mighi be replaced, but if Gen. Lee should fall, who could take his place? Echo answers who! General A. P. Hill assumed command on Saturday night at Chancellorsyille as soon as ‘General Jackson was wounded, but, he inturn being compelled to qnit the fleld trom a fiesh wound, the command derolved upon General Rodes for atime. General Stuart was, how- ever, at once sent for, and on his arrival apon the fleid, assumed control of the movements of Jackson's Gale her A. P. Hill still, how- ever, remaining near the field, and advising in all the important operations of the corps | To make a recapitulation of the follewmz events we would say there were the following battle. and participants :— Wilderness, fifteen miles aboye Fredericksburg, where Jackson succet ded in turning the enemy's flank. This ; may be called, for 2 proper understanding of tke matter, the baitle of the Wilderness. It was here that Jackson turned the enemy's flank on Saturday evening, with D. H. Hiil’s and Trimble’s divisions. The next was the fight of Chancellorsyille, to waich point the | enemy) tell back en Saturday evening, and j around which they centered and made their dest fisht, lasting from dawn until midday of Sundry. In this fight D. H. Hill and Trimble ressed them from above, whilst A. P. Hill, Laws and Anderson not only held them in check in attempting to torce our lower line butaijed m driving them from their breas works, aud accomplished the great victory of Sunday, which, indved. was the turning point in the whole affair. The taking of ihe heights on Stuiday morning may properly be called the battle of Fredericksburg. There were at this point Bark=date's brigade ot McLaw’s division, | anda part, I think, of Hayes’ Louisinna bri- gade, (hough of this 1 am not positive. j The next engagement was on Sunday eyen- | ing. The troops here engaged consisted of An- | derson's aed MeLaws.’ This occurred near Salem Chureh, abont four miles southwest of Frede-icksburg, and may, we suppose, he re- garde: as the battle of Salem Church. The re- Fult or this fight was that our men drove the enemy back fully « mule in the direction of Fredericksburg. The closing engagements oc- curred along the line of the plank road and to- wards Banks’ Ford, by which route the enemy | succeeded in recrossing the river, The troops engagd on our side were the divisions of An- derson and McLaws, who held the position nearest the river, on the upper line, and the brigades of Hays. Hoke and Lawton, on the | dower line; whilst the Mississippians, under | Barksijale, and Smith’s Briguds of E Division, guarded the rear from an attack ou wards from Fredericksburg—the heights hu ing been previously takey without the firing of | a@ gun, on Monday merning by Gordons Bri- | gade, with charged bayonets. This was a glo- rious achievement, the crowning act of the greatilrama.
