LOCAL NEWS. AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT. Grovzr’s THEATER.—The now play, “Au tora Floyd,” was formed last night before a fine audience, who were so delighted with it that the management, contrary to original in- tention, have concluded to repeat it this even- ing. This is, however, positively the last time. Mrs. Drew and her.company do not propose remaining after to-morrow night. CanTERsURY—Annetta Galletti will ap- pear to-night in the beautiful batlet, « La Maja de Seville,” and will be supported by Szollosy and the Court of Beauty, which has ever roven so attractive a feature of Canterbury Pa. Besides Galletti will appear in some of her fayorite dances. To-morrow afternoon a matinee for ladies and children. Swiss Bert Rinexes.—The Peak Family will give but two more performances in this city, this and to-morrow evening. There has been no entertainment offered our citizens this winter that has been more interesting than these; and that they have been Sperecisot by old and young, is evidenced by the fine houses nightly in attendance. Vanrietizs.—Dances, songs, ballads, panto- mimes, minstrel selections, &c., all of an enter- taining order, are nightly offered the habitues of this resort, which is now one of the most pular in the city. Ada Tesman, Bud worth, Fyatkins, the Forrest sisters, and other fine performers appear. THE RusstaN WAR AND STEREOPTICAN.— ‘These two exhibitions, either of which would 2fcrd an ample entertainment, remain on ex. hibition at Odd Fellows’ Hall, Seventh stree:, tor a few nights longer. The sieges, battles, and incidents connected with the Crimean war are admirably portraed. St. Awn’s Inran ASYLUM.—Among the many objects of charity which claim the atten. tion of the benevolent, there is not one would be considered more worthy of hberal donations than an infant asylum, if the objects of the institution were properly understood. There us one in this city which certainly recommends itself to the kind and benevolent. We refer to St. Ann’s, which is located immediately west of the “Cirele.” This institution was organized a year or two ago, but received a charter trom the Congress of the United States only in March last. Although under the care of the Sisters of Charity, it is not at all sectarian, but infants of parents of all denominations are taken in and eared for. They have at present some thirty. two helpless infants, all under the age of five years; the object being only to care for children of this age; us after that, if not adopted by some respectable parties, they are trasferred ta other insututions. These children are mostly found- ings, or children of abandoned and deprayed parents, who are rescued by the Sisters of | 4 ity from the miseries and degradations of sinful homes, and reared in a proper manner. A visit to the institution, and an inspection of the nursery, cannot be made bat with profit, znd visitors would at once faily realize the ereat necessity of the existence of such an insti tution. The children are all happy, contented, neatly dressed and cleanly, and the little cots on which they repose are faultless. In passing ihrough the nursery, the Sisters make the visit | interesting by relating certain circum. | stances connected with the inmates. In one cot may be fonnd two tiny specimens of hu- manity, one a ehild left upon a door-step, in a pelting n storm, a few days ago, and another a child whose mother died in giving it birth. Here will be pointed out the child of a soldier, whose mother cannot or will not support it, and there one upon whose head will be found | rarks evidencing the brutal treatment to which | it had beer subjected by drunken or unnatural parents. There is some sad tale connected with | all, and the mute eloquence of the little ones lying there so helpless and feeble would go directly to the heart of all, and make a fayor- able impression. The institution depends entirely for support” upon charity and the sale of such articles as ihe ever diligent hands of the Sisters make There is a tiebt of $20,000 hanging over this asylum, and the benevolent are appealed to to aid in clearing it off. Not only are the physical wants supplied, but the moral wants are prop- erly cared for. The visiting days are Mondays and Thursdays, and all whe feel an interest in the work should attend and see its operations dor themselves. ~ ie us THE McOLELLAN RESOLUTIONS.—New York ‘papers of yesterday evening announce the ar- rival in that city of Chas.
