GRANT’S ARMY. i SS ALL GOING ON WELL WITH IT, seed ES es THE GREATER PART OF THE REBEL ARMY EVACUATE PORT HUDSON. a | A dispatch was this forenoon received here from General Grant, dated on the sth instant, which shows that the Cairo dispatch of the 13th and the Jackson, Miss., (rebel) dispatch of the Otb, were positively untrue; the former haying represented that he had beaten Bowen's rebel army on the 6th inst., and the latter that Bow- en's army had repulsed him onthe 4th. In this caspatch from Gen. Grant, (of the Sth inst.,) he expre matt es satisfaction with the appearance of Ts in his vicinity, and states that Port Hudson is undoubtedl; evacuated, except by @ small garrison and their heavy artillery. AN EXAGGERATION. We are satisfied that the rumor received here yesterday that the rebel force now under Mose- by in and about Louden and Fauquier coun- tie, Virginia, is 5i0 strong, is an exaggeration. + From the information on which we predicated our statements of yesterday and the day before concerning the whereabouts of this guerilla torce, our belief is that Moseby really has no | more than a hundred or two men prowling | around with him, BLOCKADE RUNNER CAPTURED, The U.S. steamer Chocura reports the seizure, on the 4th instant, of the sloop Express, from | Nassau, N. P., bound to Wilmington, N. C.. with a cargoof salt. She had no flag, clearance, register, manifest, or sea letters. Her master stated that she was owned in Charlestory 5. C- | One of her crew was captured by the Chocura in November last, on board a Confederate schooner. LATE TELEGRAPHIC NEWS. | Sonera FROM GEN. GRANT’S ARMY. | Reinforcements Arriving at Grand Guli— | Gen. Grant Eighteen Miles from Grand | Gulf, on the Big Black River—No Truth in the Repert of a Battle at Clinton. — | Carro, May 13.—The Hon. M. Washburne | jeit the extreme front on Friday, and from him | we learn that Gen. Grant’s advance was with- | in fifteen miles of Edmond’s Station; which | was eighteen miles east of Vicksburg. i Two divisions of General Sherman's Corps had reached Grand Gulf, and General McAr- thur was crossing. The army was in excel- lent condition. SECOND DESPATCH. Carro, May 14.—The very latest dates from Gen. GYant’s army are to Thursday. At that | time he was eighteen miles trom Grand Gulf, encamped near the Big Black River. We had not yet possession of any part of the i railroad between Vicksburg and Jackson | There is probably no truth in tke reported bat- | tle at Clinton. Gen. Grant is receiving heavy reinforce- mente. A new overland road for troops and trains had been made from Young’s Point to the river below, which is only eight miles long, aud greatly expedites the forwarding of men and supplies. Ten negro regiments have been formed and Gen. Thomas, who is just from Memphis, thinks that ten more can be formed. THE NATIONAL LOAN. PHILADELPHIA, May 15.—Jay Cooké, U.S. } General Subseription Agent, reports the sale yesterday of $100,000 of the five-twenties, and to-day 92,750,000 were distributed as follews:— | New York and New Jersey $1,297,000, Boston | and New England $750,000, Ohio 320,000, Penn- syivania and Philadelphia $296,000, Baltimore | and Maryland #62,000, Kentucky $5,000, Mine | mesota, Michigan, and Illinois $17,900; total, | 2,750,000. The arrangements making for the | dediveries of these immense sales of bonds are | nearly completed by the Treasury Department; | but while delay is unavoid&ble, subscribers | have the satisfactien of receiving the interest ! on the amount eubscribed as soon as received | by any authorized agents East or West. { ARRIVAL OF THE ARAGO FROM PORT | ROYAL. Le pat has been completed to Richmond, | w& j Bidders not prpsent to The ia to be _D. eis in command of the army, andthe F &7 Colonel Straight’s disaster in Georgia, according to @ dispatch to the Cincinnati Ga- zette, is attributed to his having been supplied with broken down and inferior animals at Nashville. He could not have been one hun- dred miles ahead of Forest, as the Rebels say, when Forrest commenced the pursuit, as Rebel cavalry appeared on the northern bank ofthe Tennessee the next day after Colonel Straight left tha river, Despatches from Col. Straight himself have been received a8 late as the eyen- ing after the fight at Blountsville, in which he | reports he gave the Rebels a cevere defeat. &7- Despatches from Gen. Grant's army to the Western papers state that the most di- rect route from Milliken’s Bend to Grand } Gulf, and that now generally used, is across twelve miles of country to Richmond, La. ; | thence down & bayon on transports to Hard Times Landing, on the Mississippi, a few miles above the mouth of Big Black. This obviates the necessity of a wearisome trip of seventy miles by land, and enables the army to be pro- visioned at the present locality quite easily. a@ The Rebels in front of Murfreesboro’, Tenn., continue to exhibit symptoms of activity which keep the army of Gen. Rosecrans on the ! qui vive. The cavalry of the enemy is constant- ly changing its position. The Rebel Generals Morgan and Wheeler are said to be at Liberty and Alexandria with a force of 5,000 cavalry, and are supposed to be meditating an attack on Nashville. W7It issaid the railroad between Richmond ‘ and Fredericksburg has been fully repaired, | and that trains run regularly between the two points. It appears that the two most im- portant bridges on this road were not destroyed by General Stoneman, as generally supposed. The indications are that the rebel army has taken up a line of defence that shortens its rear and affords protection to botti the railroads ran- ning out of Richmond. "@ Governor Morton has asked the Secretary | ot War to order the confinement of eight hun- dred of the Rebel prisoners now in our hands, | that they may be held as hostages for the ex- 734 | change and return of the four hundred Alaba- | mians belonging to Colonel Straight’s 51st In- | diana Regiment, who were not paroled with | the other troops recently captured, but sent to Richmond, and denounced as renegade Alaba- } mians. THE PcuBLic DeBt.—It is stated that the ag- gregate of the public debt on the Sth instant was, in round numbers, nine hundred and eigthy-four millions of doliars, of which legal tender notes, including the fractional currency, amount to about four hundred millions, 7 The Asa Geitz, one of the new iron-clads, | ariver-Menitor, has just gone down to Cairo ' from St. Louis, and will at once join the fleet at Vicksburg. Leet se Heavy Roprery.—This morning, the clerks of Messrs. W. M. Shuster & Co., Dry Goods Merchants, Pennsylyania avenue, between Seyenth and Eighth streets, on opening the store, discovered that during the night the store had been robbed, and on examination it was found that fifty pieces of silk, worth between | Seven and eight thousand dollars, had been | taken. The thieves. were very choice in the | goods, making a selection of the. best black | and plain silks, and such as cannot ‘éasily be | identified. The thieves were cunning enongh to remove from off the goods the private marks of the firm, and left them on the counter, probably to prevent the possibility of discovery. Thus tar only the silks haye been missed, but there may have been other goods taken, of which there are large quan- ties on the shelves and packed in the second- story, but no portions of the establishment seems to have been disturbed except the shelyes from which the silks were taken. The windows and doors in the back part of the building were tound this morning secured, but the catch on the front side door had been un- screwed on the inside, by which way the thieves probably leftthe building. Itis thought that the thief or thieves were acquainted with the building, and that they secreted them- selves yesterday before the storewas closed, in | the second-story.
