In this connection the Intelli- gencer repeats its arguments in fa or of concen- tration oLour troops at important points, in- Stead of the reverse policy which hus worked 20 disasirously. The Chronicle argues that nothing has been more serviceable to the rebellion than the op- pesition in the free states against the employ- ment of negroes in the army, and proceeds to ‘show that depriving the Southern plantasions of thi ir negro labor renders it absolutely neces- | s@ry thgt their places shall be eupplied by white !shorers from the army in order that their Isnds be tilled—thus weakening eseenti- Qily the rebel army. ‘one Rates. te 7.20's, 15%; Demands, OUR MILITA —__—+— IMPORTANT AND INTERESTING FROM THE MISSISSIPPI. pene ADMIRAL PORTER'S FLEET RUNS THE REBEL BATTERIES AT VICKSBURG, —>——__ ONLY TWO OF THE BOATS INJURED, ——__ WARRENTON. MISS., BOMBARDED. $e THE GREAT IMPORTANCE OF THIS SUCCESS, a The following information was receiyed here on the night before last, in two days trom Milliken’s Bend, (on the Mississippi, near Vicksburg,) haying come in shorter time than dispatches were eyer before received from that — point. Viz: On the night of the 16th Admiral Porter suc- ceeded in running the Vicksburg batteries with seven fine gunboats of his squadron and three transports. The Benton, his flag-ship, got op- posite the upper battery—heading the line of i veesels—before the rebels opened fire, which ; they continued (from 11 p. m.) until 2 am, | upon each succeeding veesel as it passed them: { The only damage done us was the firing of the Henry Clay, one of the transports, and the tem- i porary disabling of the Forest City, another of them, anda shot through the Benton’s hull Onur loss was but one man killed and two or three wounded. The rebels’ fire was far less effective than ‘was anticipated. They burned two or three houses in the town, as our Squadron was passing, to light the river, so as to enable their | artillerists to get good views of our steamers Se they went down within range of their guns @n reaching Warrenton, Admiral Porter | bombarded that village, with what effect is not | Admiral Porter's achievement on this acca- | siom is decidedly the most important success ‘we bave had on the Mississippi since the cap- tare of New Orleans, and has at once entirely changed the aspect of affairs in that quarter. It is not proper that we should point out how | and why, but the fact must be self-evident to | | | i ll who know the situation there, and also i De what have been up to this time the sources of i the defensive strength of the rebels in that | quarter. -_—— GALLANTRY OF OUR FORCES NEAR | SUFFOLK. ' — OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT F ROM GEN, DIX. : a THE ENEMY REPULSED AT EVERY POINT. WITH LOSS OF G S AND 4 LARGE F NUMBER O! RISONERS. = ag Fortress Mowrog, Va., April 19—11.10 p.m, | Major Generat Halieck, General-in-Chicf: I deem | it due to the forces at Suffolk to notice briefly | | { i | their gallant conduct duriag the last six days: | On Tuesday General Peck’s right was attacked, and the enemy's advance was gallantly met by Colonel Foster's light troops, driving him back to the line of his pickets. Anderson’s division | was engaged at the same time on the water ) Mi front with our gunboats and batteries, and suffered materially. On Wednesday a rebel battery of twenty-pounder rifled guns was effectually silenced, and an a‘tack on the Smith Brigge, an armed quartermaster’s boat, was repulsed. Repeated attempts have been made on our lines, but have all been foiled. The storming of the enemy's battery near the west branch of the Nansemond by General Getty and the gunboats, under Lieut. Lamson, of the navy, and the capture of six guns and two hundred prisoners, closes the operations of the six days against the encmy’s large force very satisfactorily. Joun A. Dix, Maj. Gen. SERVED THEM RIGHT. Lieut. Wallace, of the sth Michigan, with one of his men and two of the 6th Michigan Volun- teers, were taken prisoners yesterday on the Centreville road, beyond that village. They | undertook to go outside of the lines toget din- . ner, and were captured by a squad of about fifteen rebels, ata point about two miles from cur pickets, who, with their glasses, saw the | affair. If ever exchanged, Lieut Wallace will | doubtless be summarily dismissed from the | service, or reduced to the ranks, as he should be. Curcago, April 21.—A special dispatch from Memphis on the 19th says: The steamer Silver Moon, from Vicksburg on Friday, brings in- telligence that on the night before the gunboats Penton, Tuscumbia, Lafayette, Pittsburg, Ca- rondolet, General Price, and three transporis ran the batteries at Vicksburg, all safely ex- cepting the transport Henry Clay, which caught fire opposite the city and was burned. The Benton was the only bost struck. She had one man killed and two wounded. ‘The transport Forest QJueen had her drum- head injured by coming in contact with one ot the gunboats. She can be easily repaired. An hour and & quarter elapsed from the time of starting until the first shot was heard from the rebel batteries, by which time nearly all the vessels had get past. Latest from Europe. pat tale A GUNBOAT SUPPOSED TO BE BUILT FoR THE BEBELS SEIZED AT LIVERPOOL. esis ee leet THR RELEASE OF THE PETESHOFF DE- MANDED AT ONCE, ate ge New Yorke, April 21.—The steamship City ef Baltimore, from Liverpoo! on the 13th inst., has arrived. The gunboat Alexandria has been seiz¢d by the enstoms anthority at’ Liverpool, on the supposition of being built for the Confeder- ates, Lerd Lyons has been instructed to demand the release ot the prize steamer Peterhoff, with compensation, and without any delay of the prize court But if there shall be alleged any legal ground of capture, this case, like all other, must follow the ordinary course. It is reported that two well-known Amer- ican mcrehants had arrived in London, to-dis- pose of two millions sterling six per cent. U_S. bonds, and with part of the proceeds to buy up vessels buildiag in England for the Cos feder- ates. And it is also reported they have been anthorized to negotiate a loan of from ten to twenty millions sterling. Ps The Confederate loan touched three per cent. discount, but ralfied to from one to one-and-a- half premium. i The American Consul at Hamburg has re- fused to attest and put his signature to a noto- rial document, because the mame of Schoder and Company, who negotiated the Confederate joan, appeared in the document. Additional information has been obtained atout the new gunboat Alexandria. She was built by Miller & Co., and recently Faunched, and seized in the Liverpool docks by the cus- téms authorities, on suspicion she was intended for the rebels, The matter will be fully inves- tigited before any proceeding are taken beyond the detention, of the vessel. The London Star considers this @yent an ex- ceedingly good omen, and demands the prose- cution ef the builders. “The correspondence between the owneref the Peterhoff and the Foreign Office is published. Lord Russell says an examination of the pa- pers having satisfied the @overnment there was no prima facie ground of capture, and that the seizure was wholly unjustifiable, have in- structed Lord Lyons to make an immediate representation of the circumstances to the Washington Governmen , and if there is no legal ground for the capture, he, it is alleged, is instructed to press for the release ef the ves- sel and cargo, with compensation. -<The Union Emancipstion Society of Man- chester have held a meeting to protest against the building of war ships for tho rebels.
