Baker's detectives, charged with swinding the families of deceased soldiers, in this wise: He had a lot of blanks rinted similar to those used by the surgeons of hospitals in which to record the names and addresses of such soldiers as might die or be discharged, and by feeing certain of the hospital clerks he obtained early information of the deaths of soldiers. As soon a3 a soldier was reported as dead on these blank records, Jolitfe ‘would sit down and write to his father, mother, brother, sister, or wife, announcing, in sympa- thetic terms, the sad fact, and proposing, fur a consideration, to forward the remains to his family, for interment in the family burying ground. Swiegert for stealing a ladies’ gold watch and chain. The case came up for trial before Jus- tice Thompsen, when it appeared that the Watch was in possession of Ida Hays, who also was arrested. She stated that the watch was given her by asoldier of a New Jersey regi- ment, who, being on furlough, paid her a visit last Sunday. She advanced the soldier five dolisrs on the watch, and employed Swiegert to sellit for her, which he did, Mr. Wm. Wil- liams being the purchaser. The officer stated that Ida at first denied any knowledge of the | transaction, but aiterwards told the officer that the soldier had told her he took it from Mr. Beggardt’s pocket.
