FORTRESS Monroe, April 14.—[Corre:pon- dence Baltimore American.}]—There is consid- erable ex, ment here in relation to the rebel approaches on the Peninsula, the threatening of our lines at Suffolk, and the precarions position of General Foster, at Washington, North Carolina. From the direction of Yorktown we haye an aecount of considerable skirmishing betwen our forces there and those of General Wise. There had been some skirmishing in front of our lines at Suffolk, where Longsteeet’s Rebel Division of over 20,000 men had adyanced. Their presence there was presumed to be to prevent relief being sent trom that direction to Gen. Foster. Orders have been issued at Suffolk for the women and children to leave, and a large number are here on their way te Baltimore. A. similar order is about to be issued at Norfolk. The death of Lieut. Colonel Kimball, of tie Hawkins Zouayes,at Sulfolk, has created much feeling throughout the department, he being universally popular, aud the pet of his regi- ment. The facts of the case, as near as I can ascertain them, sre a follows: The night was dark, and Colonel Kimball had charge of the advance picket. A horseman was observed approaching, and Colonel Kimball challenged luim as usual, “Who goes there?” The answer yas “A friend with the countersign.” The stranger was then, according to army regula- tions, ordered “To dismount, adyance, and give the countersign.” The etranger replied “I am General Corcoran,” and moved on with- out dismounting, and Colonel Kimball seized his reins, when General Corcoran fired, the wall entering Col. Kimball’s neck. There are said to have been no witnesses present. and the matter will be immediately investigated. Nothing definite han been heard from Gene. tal Foster, at Washington, North Carolina. Great fears are entertained that he will be captured with his force of 1,200men. ©.C.F, FROM SUFFOLK. . Advance of the Rebels Under Longstreet. Surrork, Va., April 12.—[Correspondence of Baltimore Ee he some-time ex- pected advance of the Rebel General Long- street upon this place occurred yesterday. He made a forced march from beyond the Black- water with a force of not less than thirty thous- and men, evidently intending to surprise the post. But we haye been well informed of his movements, our pickets were strengthened, and though he has within three miles of us at dark lust night, he has made no attack up to this hour—s o’clock in the morning, We have taken quite a number of prisoners from Gen. Hood’s Texas Brigade, which held the ad- vance, anc are well infored of the strengthand movements of the enemy. Looking up the harbor, auother Tow of piles discloses itself, stretc across trom Fort Ripley ou the middleground to Fort Johnson . The correspondent of the Tribune, whe was on board the Tronsides, Aduiral Depent’s fig ship, thus describes the action: Nearer and nearer did we approach: clearer and clearer became the lines af thie rebel de- tenses. Alroady we can count the guns o Fc Wagener (the work next to Morris’ Light- Louse) and Cumming’s Point, and the windows of the houses of St. Vincen: and Moaltrie ville. At 2.25 the first signs of the afterward fatui difficulty of steering the ship in a tideway became manifest. The bow swung on the por: side, and it was necessary to stop her engine to steady her course. Ina few moments we were again in motion. The first four Monitors had already passed Fort Wagener, and we were now abreast of it. We cun look into the very mouths of the guns, but they remain silent. We know not what w make of it. Ahead we steam, anxion‘ly awaiting the reports of the first gun. At jast, abont three o'clock, two flashes of fire burst from Fert Moultrie and two shots flew acro-s the bow of the Weehawkén, the foremost Monitor, that seemed to have eee within less than halfa mile. This fairly opened the action. The suspense did mot last long. Six bells had jusi struck, when a dull sound, like tha: of a sledge hammer upon an anvil, was heard on the tow port side. It was the hostile greeting ot Fort Sumter, now watbin one thousand and two hundred yards of ds. A second and a hid more violent than the first, shook the side of the ship. Soon there were whizaing and humming of rifled and round shot aud shell over heady Still the enecessive discharges conid be dis- tinguished. The several Feports had ot yei been drowned, so to speak, in a continudns roar. But, hark! There isa reverberationas UWough of numerous, simultaneous thunder eiaps. Now a fierce, increasing roar Vibrating the alr With @ violence that causes even the the solid mass of our ship to tremble. A look through the open port on the port side disclosee the causes of the furious outburst. The firsi four | Monitors had reached the converging point of the pin of Cumming’s Point battery, Fort Sumter apd Moulimie and atiery Bee, one alter the other had steadily steamed, without firing a shot, tothe verge of the concentrating ra s, The enemy evidently reserved their main tire for work at close quarters; but when the Weehawken had reached wittiin six hun- dred yards of Fort Sumter, a long, broad, bril- liant line of flame suddenly formed a fiery girt from Cumming’s Point t» Moaltrie ville, follow- ed instantaneously by immense vol of smoke and a rain of projectiles that fairly Bid the turrets of our craft with countless spouts of water thrown up by striking she: aud sei. THER WOUNDED MONITORS, The Keoksk had ninety shots in all, runeveen, on the water line (twelve starboard, seyen part;) fifteen in the after turret (five of thém * through; one Whitworth sheel painted remain- ed sticking in the wall;) twelve in the forward» turret (three of them through;) twenty-five on the sloping sides (fifteen siarbeard, ten, port;) eight throngh sheeting on after turret; ten on smokestack (seven through, three glane- ed;) jour through the boats, two glanced off the deck; one cut signal staff, three or four went through the fizz. The New lronsides was hit between Sixty and seventy iimes, but sustained no materia: damage. One of the shutiers of port five, port side, was knocked off; aa eleven, inch-sheib Icdged in the bow between the sides and the sand bags. A shot passed through the «mole stack, and her bulwarks were much shattered. The Weehawken was strock fifty -nine times. The turret was badly dented and worked web difficulty. Many bolts in the pilot-hotse had bees loosened and driven through. The Montauk was hit twenty times; the Pas- saic fifty-eight times. The Nantucket was strnck fifty-one times, and had her torret stopped twice by shot. The Catskill recurved about the same number ot shots. Both the jat- ter_bad their deeks almost torn open by rifled bolis. The Patapsco was hit between forty ana fif- ty times, and, berides the dicabling of her 20- pounder Parrott, had her turret much dented and pilot-house weakened. The Nahant was struck eighty times, and had her pijot-nouse almost broken into pieces.
