THE EVENING STAR. THE TWO SISTERS. BY RATHANIEL HAWTHORNE. ‘The following story, the simple and domestic imeidents of which may be deemed hardly worth relati atter such a lapse of time, awakened a ee of interest a hundred years ago, in a principal seaport of the bay of Mas- sachusetis. The rainy twilight of an autuma day, a parior on the second floor of a house, inly furnished, ae Leseemed the cireun- stances of its inhabitants, yet decorated with curtesities from beyond the sea, and a few specimens of Indian manufacture, these are only particulars to be presented in regard to seenes and seusons. Two young and come- ly women sat together by the fireside, ufexing ir mutual and peculiar sotruws. They ‘were the recent brides of two brothers, a sailor and 4 jandsman, and two successive days had Bronght tidings of the feath of each, by tho ehances of Canadian wartare and the tempeas- tuons Atlantic. The universal sympathy ex- @ited by this bereavemant, drew numerous econdoling guests to the habitation of the wi- dowed sisters. Several, among then was the minister, had remaited until thy verge of the . evening, when, ene by one, whispering maay comfortable passages of scripture, that were Answered by more abundant tars, they took their leave, and departed to their own happy homes. The mourners, though not insensihie to the kindness of their friends, had yearned to be alone. United as they-had tron, by 1ela- tionship of the living, and now ms,re closely no by thatof the dead, each feita ; if whatover eonrolation her grief admitted w as tobe found im the bosom of the other. Thysy jomed their hearts and wept together silevitly. But after an hour ef such indulzence, (one of the sisters, ali ef whese emotions were influenced by her | mild, quict, yet not feeble ¢ huracter. began to recollect the precepts of Te signation aud endu- rance which her piety ?.ad taught her when she did not think to hee i them. Her misfor- tunes besides, ss earlies ¢ kuown, should earli- est cease to inwrfere Ww ith her regular course ef duties; accordingly haying placed the table before the fire, 8nd @ sranged a frugal meal, ehe took the hand of her companion. “Come, dearest sister, you have not eaten a morsel to-day,” §F 6 eni “ Arisa, I pray you, aud let us ask a? lessing on that whigh is pro- vided for us.”' Her sister wavs of a lively and irritable tem- ment, “ami the first pangs of her corrow ad Leen tjcpressed by shrieks and passionate lamentat‘ors, She now shrunk from 3 ary's words lige a wounded sufferer from the hand that rev tevs the throb. ’ “Th em is no blessing for me, neither will I ask it,” cried Margaret, with a fresh burst of ware. « Would it were His will that I might “never taste food mere.” ¥e= she trembles at these rebellious expres- sion, almo-=t as -oon a8 they were ultered, and by#legrees. Mary sueceeded in bringing’ her sieter’s mind nearer to the sitnaton of her ewn. Time rolled on, and the usual hour of their repose arrived. The brothers and their brides entered the marriage state with no more than the slender means which then sanctioned such a step, and confederated themseiyes in one household, with equal rights to the parlor, and claiming ex<lusive privileges in two slee img rooms contigucus to it. Thither widowed ones retired, after heaping ashes upon the dying embers of the fire, and placing a lighted lamp upon the hearth. The doors of beth chambers were left open, se thata part ef the interior of each, and the beds and their ancloted curtain were reciprocally visible. Sleep did not stez] rpon the sisters at one and the same time. Mary «xperienced the effect eften consequent upon grief qyietly borne, and secon sunk into (emporary forgetfulness, while Margaret became more disturbed and feverish in proportion as the night advanced ith @e deepest and stillest hours. She lay listening to the drops that came down in mo- motonous succession, unswayed by vreath of wind, and @ neryous impulse continually causing ber to lift her head from the pillow, and gaze into Mary's chamber and the inter- mediate apartment. The cold light of the lamp threw the shadows of tife furniture up against the wail, stamping them immovable there, except when they were shaken by & sudden flicker of the tame. Two vacant arm ehairs were in their old pbdsition on opposite sides of the hearth, where the brothers had wont to sitin young and laughing dignity, as heads of families; two humbler seats were near them, the thrones of that little empire. where Mary and herself had exercised in lo & power that love had won. The cheerful r dianuce of tue fire had shone upon a happy cir- cle, and the dead glimmer of the lamp imight haveftenefitted their uafon now. While Mar- garet groaned in bitterness, she heard a knock atghe street door. “How my heart would have leapt at that sound but yesterday,” thought she, remember- img the anxiety with which she had so long waited tidings from her husband. “I care not for it now; let them begone. for I will not arise.” But even while # sort of childish trettuiness made her thus resolve, she was breathing hur- riediy and straining her eargto catch a repeti- fion of the summons. Itis difficult to be con- vinced of the death of one whom we have deemed another self. The knocking was now renewed in slow and regular strokes, appa- rently given with the soft end of a doubie fist, and was heard through several thicknesses of | the wall. Margaret looked to her sister's cham- ber, ard beheld her still lying in the depths of sleep. She clightly arrayed herself, trembling between fear and eageruess as she did so. «Heaven help me!” sighed she. «I haye nothing leit to fear, and methinks I am ten | times more a coward than ever.” i Seizing ‘Le lamp from the hearth, she has- tened to the window that overiooked the street door It wis a lattice turning upon hinges; and having thrown it back, she stretched her head © way into themoistatmosphere. A lanu = reddening the frontof the house, and melting its lightin the neighboring puddles, while a deluxe of darkness overwhelmed every object. le window grated on its hinges, a maa ina bicvad brimmed hat and blanket coat stepped froin under the shelter of the projecting story, and looked upward, to discover whom his application had aroused. Margaret knew bim as a friendly inn-keeper of the town. “W would you haye good man Parker?” acked the widow. “Lack.a-day, is it you, Mistress Margare:}" ered the inn-keeper. “1 was afraid it might be your sister Mary, for I hate to see a yeung | Woman in trouble, when I have not a word of comfort to whisper to her.” ~ “For heayen’s sake, what news. do you ? screamed t j “ ye has been an express through the | town within this haif hour,” said good man Parker, traveling from the westward jurisdic- tion, with letters from the governor and coun- cil. He tarried at my house to refresh himself with a drop and & morsel, and I asked him what tidings on the frontiers. He told me we j had the better in the exirmish you wot of, and | hat thirteen men, reported slain, are well and sound, and your husband among them. Ke. sides he is appointed one of the escort to bring the captivated Frenchers and Indians home to the P peed x jail. I judged you wouldn't mind being broken of your rest, and-so I step- ped over to tell you. Good night.” So saying, the honest man departed; and the lantern gleamed along the street, by imging to view indistinct suapes of things, and the frag- | ments of a world, like order glimmerin, through a chaos, or memory roaming over the | past. But Margaret stayed not to watch these | peng we results. Joy fiushed into her | heart and lighted it up at once, and, breathiess, @ with winzed steps, she flew to the bedside of her sister. She paused, however, at the | door of her chamber, while a thought of pain | broke in upon her. “Poor Mary!" she said to herself. awake her to feel her sorrow sharpened by my happiness? No; 1 will keep it within my own bosom till the morrow.” She approached the bed to see if Mary's sleep was peaceful. Her face was turied partly upward to the pillow, and had been uddem there to weep; bata look of motionless ¢ontentment was Visible upon it, as if ier heart, like « deep lake, had become calm, be- eanse its grief had sunk down sv far within. Happy itis. and strange that the lighter rows are those from which dreams are cli fabricated. Maggaret shrunk from distu her sister-in-law, and felt as if her o fortune had rendered her involuntarily un- Guthful, and as if alteredand diminished at. | fection must be the consequence of the disclos- ure she bad to make. When the night was far advanced, Mary woke with asndden start. A vivid dream had latterly involved ber in his anreal 1 which, how-®er, she could only rem that it had been broken in upon at its teresting part. For a hitle the, slumber hung abeut her lik morning mist, hiadering her from perceiving the distinct outline of her situation, She listened with impertect con- lousness to two or three volleys of rapid and eager kno-king at first she deemed the noise a mater of like the breath she drew next, it ay thing in which she had no eo cern, andl y she became aware it was * eur.te Be ce FY to be oheyed. At the Fome mom ni, & pang of recollection darted wio ber mind; the pall of sleep was thrown Lack from the face of grief; the dim licht of the cbomty r, and the objects therein revealed, had eiained all her suspended tdeas, and restored fhein as soon As she Unclosed hereyes. The storm was over and the moon was un: it shone upon unbroken @louds ahove and below, upon honsee black with moisture, and upon little lakes of fallen rain, curling with silver beneath the quick enchantment ofa breeze, A young man, in # #ailor's dress, wet as if he had come out of the depths of the sea, stood alone under the window. Mary recocnized him as one where livelihoed was gsined by short voyages onthe coast; nor did she forget that previous to ber marriage he had been an un- succer*{u] Wover lor her hand. ' “What do you se¢k here, Stephen?” said she, «Cheer up, Mary, for I seek to comfort you, answered the rejected lover. “You must know that 1 get Lome ten minutee ago, and the firet thing my mother told me was abvut your hus- band; so, without saying 2 word to the old wo- man, lelapped on my fat and ran out of the houre. The brig will beat into the bay by daylight, with this wind, and you will see him here before to-morrow. Thefe's the comfort 1 bring you, Mary. So, geod night.” He hurried away, while Mary watched him | witha doubt of waking reality, that seemed tronget or wenker as healternately entered the shade of the houses, or emerged into the broad | strenks of moonlicht. Gradually, however, a. food of conviction swelled into her heart, in strength enoxgh to overwhelm her, had its in- | e@rease been more. Her first impulse was to Srouse jer sister-in-law and communicate the new-born gladness. She opened the chamber door, which had been closed in the course of the night, though not Intched, advanced to the “bedside, and was about to lay her hand on the slumberer’s shoulder. H Bat then she remembered that Margaret | would awake to thoughts of death and woe, rendered not the less hitter by the o with her own felicity. She suffered th . of the lamp to fall upon the unconscious form of the bereaved one. Margaret lay in unqulet sleep, and th drapery was displaced around | her: her young cheek is Tose tinted, Lipa b opened in @ vivic smile; an expression ut joy debarreti its passage by her sealed eyelids, | struggled forth like incense from ber whole | countenance. - j -My poor sister, you will awaken too soon | from ihat happy dream,” thought Mary. It will be | seen that the Weehawken proved her seaworth- | mmess by successfully weathering one of the severest gales on record. The importance of this experience is inestimable, and the thanks of the country sre due to Captain Rodgers for | having overcome the prejudices of the sailors, and for haying the courage thus to test the only | point which remained to be proyed—the sea- going qualities of our Monitors.
