Per- tle beneficial changes have Iately been under the direction of the energetic pas- pot, their d muskets lying arow the annoyance of ladies waiting for the Tture of trains. Mr. Edmonds has obviated jis imconvenience by locating the soldiers at ie opposite side of the building, and haserected icks for their use to deposit their baggace. guards are also now extended all round building for the protection of passengers @ others having business with the company. ¢ beneficial effects of this is apparenttoevery . Passageways and entrances are now not locked up, and better order is consequently TY ed. The railrond company have of late increased i Tolling stock of theirroad by the addition of mew and magnificent cars, at a cost of 100,000. These cars were built at the compa. ne works at Mount Clare, and are first-class in respects. The seats and interior fittings of | @ CNTs are of black walnut, and the cars are Bitsnzed as to be much more roomy than the rdinary railrosd carria There is no spring to the seat, but the car is so construeted that a aliar easy, rocking motion is given when te train moves. The interior of the car presents to some extent the appe nee of a steamboat salocn, and, in fact, is copied after the interior of the steamboat Isaac Newton. The cars have | opem.nes in the top, allowing a more -freé ci culation of air, a great desideratum in acrowd- ed car filled with people. Notwithstanding the immense business in the Passenger travel of the road at this time—start. ang off, =s they do, fourteen and eighteen cars | filled with passengers—every thing is conducted | wit clock-work regularity, under the manage- mentof Mr. Edmords. All the passengers are not enly provided with seats, but they are so claseified as to secure to ail the greatest possible amount of pleasure and comfort on the journey. Certain cars are specially assigned to ladies. mitcnous assemploges and disagreeable associ- ations. The depotand cars, too, are now kept ina | mere cietuly condition than heretofor® ‘The freight business is also very extensive, During the week preceding Thanksgiving, a large ‘business was done in freight, of boxes contain- inz turkey=, chickens, &c., from parties in the North. to their soidier friends and relatives in the camps about Washington. On one nigh, mo = than fifty boxes of this sort of freight arrived. - Among the most obliging and indefatigable officials at the depot is Mr. Reuben Collins, who hae charce of the baggage. He has tecn em- — in that position for seventeen years, and as-never yet losta single piece of baggaye, although between three and four hundred pieces have been assigned to his care at ene time. 5 So SSS Destructive Fire —About half past eleven o'clock last nighty a fire broke ou: in an old stable in the rear of Mr. M. M.White’s embalm- ing egtablishment, south side of Pa. avenue, nar the coiner of Third street, ana the flames @ op spread to Mr. White's sh>p and the ad- joiming buildings on theeast—all of which were of frame—and in a short time three or four buildimgs were entirely consumed, and the building occupied by Mr. Chas. Mades as a res. taurant, ou the corner of Third st, was burnt to euch an extept as to render it useles. For a while the fire raged fearfully, and the wind blowing <irectly across the avenue the sparks | feli thick and fis: upon the houses on the op- posite side of the street. ‘The property occupied by Mr. White belongs to the ‘state of Major P. J. Howle, late of the marine corps, and balance of the properiy consumed was owned by Messrs. il. Naylor and John A. Smith reepectively. At the time of the fire there were one o- two Julia Mortimer and | Me Tda, , } | new regiments; corpses in Mr. White's establishment, wich _ were carried out. Most ef his tools, however, were burned, thus inflicting a loss of two or three huncr+d dollars. Mr. Donlan, who resided over Mr. White's shop, lost the greater portion of his furniture. This isasertous loss,as Mr. D. had not been married more than six months and had com- menced housekeeping but a short time ago. ‘The shoe store of G. Huetter, the watchmaker sbop of Mr. Weil, and the small-ware store of Thomas Fawcett were also destroyed, together with a portion of their stock and furniture. The loss of the latter in furniture and stock will amount to over five hundred dollars—no in- surance. A horse belonging to Mr. White aite> having been very slightly burnt. MeLermoit’s large coach factory was no donbt the salvation of the entire square, ss | all the intervening buildings between that and | Mrs. Bannerman’s boarding-house, near t! corner of the alley, are of frame and very combustibie. No serious damage was how- ever done to McDermett’s building, except the burning of one or two window sashes, and the fire there was speedily extinguished. Suspicion of the act was directed to a young man named Ed. A. The Franklin and Perseverance fire compa- nies were the first on the ground. The steam- engine did not arrive until the fire had been | raging nearly an hour, and then could not pro- opre water in sufficient time to be very effxc- tive. The Metropolitan Hook and der Company rendered the most efficient service. | ereeeiliaentond A Rovnpsmanw STaynrv.—Last evening, about six o'clock, 3 party of young men, con- sisting of John Little, Wm. wayne, George Spates and John Morgan, assembled in the alley between Four-and-a-half and Sixth streots and Pennsylyania and Missouri avenues, where are located a number of notorious houses, and bebaved in a very disorderly manner. Roundsman Leach went to them and ordered them to go away; but instead of obeying his di- rections, they turned upon him to beat him. Justice Walter, who happened to be riding by at the time, saw the melee, and rode his horse into the crowd, and tem) ly scattered the partivs. Little and Lewayne went to Purdy's Tettaurant, on Sixth street, and got & jarge knife, and returned and attacked Leach; Little stabbing him in the left side, inflicting a wound from which the intestines protruded. Patrol- mxn Donn reached the wounded officer soon atter he had falien, and got him to Smith’s drag ore, Opposite the Nativnal Hotel. A military surgeon and Dr. Dove, of this city, were soon at the spot, and rendered prompt aid. The wounded man was piaced upon a stretcher, and taken to his home in the Northern Liberties.
