FRONT. OF WASHING- TON: . ——_ The latest information direct from General MeCiellan’s army, recetved here up to cieren a. ™ to-day, is to @ late hour last night, whea Céeneral McU. telegraphed that he had a severe engagement throughogt the day, resalting by nightfall in gaining the position for which he fought. His lose in the battle had ‘been heavy. Nothing was at that time ascertained as to the extent of the loss of the rebels, which wo pro- sume to have been very hoary also, (doubtless heavier than ours,) as they disputed the ground contended for with desperate courage, and were ouly drivea back foot by foot. We heid he position thus won throughout the night, and our general officers were of opinion that the engagement would be renewed this morn. ing. Information from a point within four miles of ‘the battle-ground, up to nine o’clock this morn. ing, however, says nothing of the engagemen having beeh renowed previous to that hour. It merely states that s thousand Rebel prisoners, : taken yesterday, wore then being marched to ihe rear, past that point, ander guard. It is believed by our general oMicers engaged yesterday that they fought the whole rebel army. it Jackson took the road to Winchester on leaving Harper’s Ferry on Tuesday morning, as alleged on exeelient authority, this impression of theirs ean hardly be correct. His marching along that road only fors mile out, looks as | though he is aiming to recross into Maryland, at some ford below Harper's Ferry, in order to getin MeClelinn’s rear. We take it for granted © that any such movement on his part has been | duly guarded against. A reconnoissance in force, made yesterday* has demonstrated that there are no Rebel troops | between Washington and Bult Ren, or any | where in our front in Virginia within tweaty- | two miles. PRISONERS RELEASRHD. On Tuesday evening Maj. Sherburne, of Gen. Wadsworth's staf, cxamined g nggaher of State prisoners in the Old Capitol paeparatory toa final decision in their cases. About a dozon prisoners of war were released upon taking the oath of allegiance, They were mostly residents | es of New Orleans, and intelligent men. They seemed pleased with the intelligence of McOlel- ; jan’s victory, and hoped it would be so com- plete as to terminate the war, fhough they as- serted that the rebel leaders woald fight till the j last hope was lost. THE STRAGGLERS' AND DESERTERS’ CAMP. Tm accordance with Gen. Banks’ orders, Maj- Doster is transferring the deserters and strag- glers arrested by his suards to the convalescent | amp near Alexandria. Yesterday, 100 were ent trom Georgetown. This forenoon about | 5 were sent from the same point by steamer. They are collected at Forrest Hall, in George- own, from sil points in both cities, and for- warded from there. The camp near Aloxan- | ana is under command of Col. Jno.$. Belknap, | of the coth New York veluntee RELEASED, Dr. Antoine C. They con- } MRue to arrive from the South, but are sent on as fast as possible. The home guards now per- form sentine} duty at the prisons. There are now in confinement at the Libbey prison 150 officers of Greneral Pope's army, in- cluding Gen. Prince, and all confined in one room, the rebels still discriminating batwaen them and other officers. There are also in con- dinoment 150 citizens, among whom are sixty of the volunteer nurses who went from this city for the purpose of attending to the sick and wounded. There are also 150 invalids im tho hospitals. When the prisoners captured in Pope's army were first taken to Richmond they were not al- lowed to make any purchases whatever, or to haye any bedding, and wero fed on common Soldiers fare. Since Pope’s superseduro they are, however, treated somewhat imtter; and the late release and clearing out of the prisoners has given them much more room, and thus ren- dered thom mors comfortable. A heutenant of Popo’s army was shot in the aim by a sentinel, for looking ont of the prison window; and a citizen of Philadeiphia was kilied by a shot aimed at anothor soldier for the sare offense. He was in command of the division formerly commanded by Reno, in- creased by several new regimerita, and the men had just distingnished themselves in driving the rebels from ie sommit of the Bine Ridge. These Generals wero bosom friends; had beea clasemstee at West Point, and graduated to- gether. When Reno foil, Sturgis ran to hie as. sistance, had him picked up, aud said: «Jeses, sre you badly wounded?” To which he re. plied: “Yes, Sam, I am s deadman.” Gen. Sturgis had bim placed upon a liter and car: ried to the rear, where he died .n an hour.
