Excirsnent in New Yous.—By a gentleman just arrived from New York, we learn that great excitement prevailed in that city yesterday, ere~ ated by the Tribune issuing an extra denouncing went up tothe assistance of the wounded, re- | General McClellan es a traitor. The turned to this city this morning. He eccom- panied the fiag of truce sent out from our lines yesterday morning with an ambulance train to the battle fleld, and from him we gather some interesting particulars. A Confederate otlicer was found In charge of a gang who were engaged in burying the dead The modus operandi was toranthe noose of & rope over the heeis ef the dead man, when two or three seizing the rope, dragged the body toa trench and dumped it in. Perhaps one bun- dred or one hundred and fifty bodies were in- terred in each trench. The rebels had been at their usual work of stripping the bodies of our dead, and numbers ‘Were to be seen lying stark naked. The enemy had, however, treated our wounded with some humanity, in many instances supplying food and water to the sufferers. The line of battle must have extended some five miles, as the dead and ‘wounded were found covering the ground to that distance. The Confederate officer superintending the burial of the dead estimated our loss in killed on Saturday, at not more than 500, and our wounded at about 5,000. He admitted a loss of Confeder- We killed of only 300, but said their number of wounded was very large. According to all re- ports, the number of wounded in the battle of Ssturday wes disproportionately large to the number killed. The Confederates speak of the battle of Saturday efternoon as one of the severest of the war While on the battle-ground our informant heard some little cannonading up stream, but nothing indicating an engagement. The Confederate cavalry sre scouring the coun- try in every direction, and in the opinion of Mr. Somers some of the civilians who went up to the vicinity of the battle-field have been captured SKIRMISH NEAR CENTERVILLE About two o’elock on Sunday afternoon as a detachment of 51 men from the 24 cavalry under Captain Hight were at Centerville they were sur- prised by a superior force of Stewart's rebel cav- alry and some artillery. Some of the rebels returned the tire, wounding Martin Kelly in the thigh. The party being overwhelmed by numbers were ouliged to surrender, but the enemy at once paroled them, and this morning they « rived in the city. They report all quiet last uight, and state that yesterday the enemy were near Centerville. During last night three trains of cars came in to the Maryland Avenue Station, one loaded with wounded and two bringing the sick from the Palls Church Hospital Station, which has been broken up and the invalids and all the hos- pital furniture removed to this point.
