It is not impossible that the enemy may really be retiring thelr main force, and make these flank demonstrations to conceal that fact for the time being. If they are not retiring they are in larger force than we believe, and are much better sup plied with ammunition, &c, than we imagingd up to this time. However, we care not what supplies they may have brought with them, if they semain before this city for but a few days longer those supplies must be exhausted. W ben the ambulances in largenumber reached the late battle fleld yesterday, to bring away the wounded, a stampede commenced among them, the drivers having turned the horses towards the road leading to Washington, and commenced a hasty retreat with their empty vebicles. Some frightened driver imagined that Stuart’s cavairy wes coming up, and eoecre ely gavethe alarm. The packs spread almost with the speed of electricity, and doubtless would have been pro- lific of sertous consequences had not the guards on the road rushed forth with pointed guns and threatened to shoot the drivers unless they re- turned to the fleld. This conduct on the part of the guard had the desired effect. After awhiie the ambulances again reached the field, and per- formed their approprtate duty in bringing away the wounded. There seems to be no doubt that the enemy’s pickets were hovering ar-und the persons en- gazed in their humane work on the field, but up to an early hour this morning they had net been interrupted. Ambulances are constantly arriving here with the wounded, and a small portion of the sick. From all that can be gathered, though we have suifered severely, our men are confident of re- trieving their loa of Saturday. Itwaa owing to their tmpetuosity and daring in charging the enemy in the woods that they suffered so many casualties. A number of stragglers, on their way to Wash- ington and Alexandria, were p.cked up by the enemy Curing last night. There was no fighting of any consequence on Sunday, only aceasional skirmisbiog, or a few shots poured into the woods from time to time on tue enemy, as if to try the range of our guns.
