AS?OCIATED PKESS DISPATCH. FURTHER CONCERNING THE BATTLE OF SipURDAY. THE FIRST APPRARANCE OP THE EN- EMY ON THE LE&FT. = pee THE SUBSEQUENT SHARP FIGHTING. eens THE PASSAGE OF LONGSTREET AND JACKSON THROUGH THOR- OUGHFARE GaP. as Up to1 o’cleck on Saturday, the fighting was 80 light that it was thought there would not be any serious aetion forthe day. A ca’ recon- Roisance of four regiments, including the Michi- gan Cavalry, sent from the left to ascertain if the enemy were attempting a Sank movement, dis- covered nothing te indicate their presence, but on returning to the left and after taking position, the enemy suddenly made their appearance in immense numbers ta 8 wood in front, and so near that thelr faces be distinguished At the same point a battery was suddenly Wheeled into position and fred at the cavalry The first shell struck in froat ef the cavairy, and richochettei high over to @ @eld in their rear, The second shell burst over their heads, when they fell back to cover of a bill. Stuart’s cavalry presently appeared in large force, coming on a charge. The Confederate cavalrymen were armed with costly English shot gucs, which they Lela at the breast an@ fired (both barrels at once) as they spproached on the charge. Our eavalrymen repelled the charge by a dash with their sabers, and the enemy fell back to the shelter of the woods, raliied superbly and returned again to the charge, and were again repelied- The enemy’s infantry now epened upon our cav- alry, compelling it to retreat. About t:+ same time our left wing was repulsed, and fell back with considerable loss. Two lines of pickets effectually prevented the stragglers from moving off, and the center and Tight wing stood se Srmly as te prevent the encmy : from gsining any substantial fruits from their first successes. Our soldiers who hed been in the thickest of = the fight, en the conelusiem of the action fell down on the ground, too much exhausted to seek Shelter or food, and slept where they were through the night, despite the falling rain. Their hardships were increased by the want of water, as every spring aud well was naturally drained to supply such « host, and many cheer- fally paid twenty-five cents for a canteen fuil. O:bers drank the muddy water from the sloughs where thousaads ef horses had passed through. ‘The fact that not ealy Jackson, but Longstreet and Ewell, got through Thoroughfare Gap suc- cessfully, has caused some surprise, as it is stated that a regiment of men can hold the Gap agains; all comers, as it is marrow, and the road through it one in which it would be impossible for the enemy to ualimber a gun at the defen- sible points. Ii is stated that Bongetreet’s advance, a single regiment of sharpshooters, was drives back (sh+lled) by a detachment sent out for that pur- pose ; But that, from some cause, this force of ours ‘was tly withdrawn, and the g2p left open foi ‘to pass throngh unchalienged. Prisoners state that Gen. Lee was personally in command on Friday and Saturday. A gentleman who jeft Fairfax Court-House yes- terday evening at half-past six o’clock says that at thet time reinforcements and ammunition were pouring into the Federal lines. This gentleman assisted in caring for the wounded in the vicinity of the Bull Runa bridge. About 1,600 of our ‘wounded were there. During yesterday there was no general fight, but simpiy skirmishing, and the rebels made no attack, but employed themselves by throwing Shells from under cover ef woods, from which they could net be induced to come ~ ARRIVAL OF WOUNDED SOLDIERS, This morning, two trains arrived, bringing about 1,300 soldiers, all but about 100 of whom ‘were wounded in the late batiles im Virginia. Assistant Surgeon Rebert Dodson, ef the 3d Maryland, was brought up sick. Col. Brown, of the 10th Indi- ana, was killed. Conveyances for the removal of the sick and ‘wounded were in attendance at once. No sooner had the train arrived than the characteristic lib- erality of the eitizens of the Seventh Ward dis- played itself by the residents, male and female; runing hither and thither, and dispensing food and delicacies to the sufferers. Col. M. D. Harding, of the 10th Pennsylvania Reserve, was wounded and is now at the Avenue House. Col. Harding ts a eon of Col. John J Harding, who was killed at the battle of Buena Vista, Mexico. The Confederates marched the ers to within & mile of Bristow, whes yeturned to Msnasess immediately, by order of Gen. Jeok- son, reaching Mansseas again at 11 o'clock om Wednesday morning. When they got back te Manassas they found « fizbt going on betweem the New Jersey division, uoder Gen. Taylor, and the forces under Jackson, who drove beck Tay- lor and took some prisoners. The prisoners were then marched within a mile of Bull Run; there they met Jackson again, returning from Center- ville, with some prisoners. He directed the pste- oners to be marched back, when they stopped opposite “‘Wier’s House,” the former headquar- ters of Beauregard, where they were put inte camp, being guarded, and staying there till @ minutes before 11 o'clock, Wednesday night. They then were taken to the old Manassas battle field, and remained till Jackson's left wing was attacked by Sigel’s forces; whereupon they were removed towards Sudley Church, abouts mile, when Jackson’s right was opened upon. There they commenced taking a list of the prisoners, preparatory to paroling, and they got the names of the prisoners furnished by Cept. Mercer, of the Quartermaster’s Department, U.8.A. They returned with the papers in about two hours, The prisoners were then drawn up in line, an@ the calling of their ntmes was age'n commenced. After the falling back of our forces to Center~ Ville there was naturally some anxiety felt as te the safety of Gen. Banks’ command at Ostlett's and Bristow Station. He left Bristow Station about 8 o'clock yester- day morning, end succeeded in bringing of bie entire command and wagon train uninjured, his only encounter with theenemy belag an occasion- al interchange of shots, reaching Centerville about noon yesterday. The fact that the enemy did not undertake more seriously to op; his j nction with Pope shows how terribly the Confederates were ceded i the battle of Sitarday. 5 EVACUATION OF FREDERICKSBURG. There seems to be no doubt but that Gen. Burnside has evacusted Fredericksburg sné ‘withdrawn his forces tos point where these erans can be actively serviceable ia the work of the campaign. Much of the preparatory work for the evacuation was effcted some days ago, and our informant, who lef: Falmouth yesterday, says that about 6 o’clock in the evening hesew @ het gr bt in the direction of Prede: correc an reser a Hyd mouth, had been fully effected 3d dad the sbiiity of the enemy to pursue him effectually guarded against.
