INTERESTING FROM THE #RONT. {THE BOMORS ABOUT THE ARMY— STRENGTH OF TUB oe FORCE THIS GIDB OF BULL RUN MOUNTAINS, oy ETC. Wasararox, August 29, 1802. ‘The excitement to-day In regard '0 affairs across the Potomac has been intense, The city has been filled with @ thousand and che rumors. It was stated that tv sup- Piles for General Pope's army world to-day be exba:iste and DO communivativa or means of forwarding supplies ave yet been obtained. Karly in the morning intelligence waa recoived that yesterday, at half-past nine o’cleck, Gon. Heintzeinan had made an attack upon the robels as Bristow Stations Cour or five miles beyond Manassas Junction, and alter 4 Ddattle, in which there was great loss on both silos, he defeated and drove them beck to Manassas. A Jittlo later it was understood that Gon. Pope had managed to throw the army corps of Gon. Fitz John Porter, aud the division of Buraside’s corps under the command of Gea. Reno, between the revolsjon this side of Bui] Run \foun- tam and the main body of theirarmy. Apprehensious Were entertained thatthe main rebel army would take e@dvantage of thie movement to mako an attack ia forve ‘upon Pope’s army. He would then have had leit only hia Original force to repel such an attack. Up to this time it bas been understood that no attaek has been made by the main robe! army. To-day General Hetutrelman’s corps, composod of the divisions of Kearney and Hooker, attacked the rebe's at Manassas, and, after a desperate struggle, drove from that position. It is stated that they retroated fiat im the direetion of Warreuton Junction, whero they met the forces under Geueral Fitz John Porter, and ‘finding their return to the main body of their army thus intor- rupted, they countermarched beyond Mavasvas, in the direction of Loosburg. At the last accouats General Heintzeiman was following them up, and thore was every prebability of the capture of the whole of this rebel force, as Genera! Franklin, with his corps of the Army of the Potomac, and a largo porfion of Sumner’s corps, had already been sent in a direction to intercept the meve- ment of those fugitives towards the Potomac at Edwards’ Ferry or Leesburg. ‘The number of the rebel force on this side of Bull Run Mountain bas boon variously estimated. Until today the highest number named was 30,000; but there arrived here the Rev. J. N. MoMillan, chaplain of the One Hundred and Ninth Penosylvania rogimont, who, having been sent te this city with wound- ed men from Pope's army, was on his return to Warrenten and was captured by the robels at Manas. sas Junction en Tuesday night; he was retained in ousto- dy until Wednesday night, when be was provided with @ pass, allowing him to go im the direction of Alexandria. The pass was given by Briga‘ier General Taliaferro and was oountorsigned by General A. P. Hill.
