Trt HorPitats —Editor S:ar: I solicit a brief fprce in the columns of your journal for a few humane suggestions, which, | think, if listened to by those who possess the power of carrying nt, will prove of substantial benefit k and wounded volunteers in our . In my 'v visits to the military hos- pital, Armory Squ2r’, under the skillful ard gen- lemanly charge of Dr. Bliss, [ have noticed a pew nnd decid-d4 tmprovement Intreduced there for the better comfort and yreater quiet of cur Invelid scldie A email red flag is effixed to the bed of every patient In each ward, whee condition is considered dangerous or critical. This new and simple device basa two fold effect. In the first place it guarantees to the sick or wounded soldier security from intrusive atten- tions and coricus Interrogations on the part of visitors. J mean no disreapect to our fellow-citt- zens who, I am eatisfied, Lave no other object in view In visiting the hospitals but the alleviation of the miser!-s ard the relief of the sufferings of the brave men who bave fetizbt and bied for the defense of cur good old flag and its traditio al glories. But, at the same time, it fs quite ob- vious. that each bespital contains few or more patients who, in certain stages of their illness Tequire mere the «kil! of the physician avd the untiring vigilam e of the resident nurses than the kindnesses and attections of visitors. In the sec- ond piace, tue minister of religion, whim duty or charity may p-ompt to visit our hospitals, cra discover ata g!-nce, when he enters each ward, where his setvic‘s are most needed. Thus he Is spard the labor—too often a fruitless one—of searching out iucse of the sick who require his immediate ministerial aitention. " I have likewise observed in our hospitals that a Iabel or card, Inscrib-d with the name, regi- ment, compary. ir jury or disease of each Invalid, is suspended over the bed of every sick or wounded soldier. {could not help noticing one most important om!ssion. The religion of the soldier ix in no case mentioned on the card or label to which I refer How easy it would be for those whose duty it is to secure the above information, to inquire also of the religion of each soldier, that it may be aaded tothe rest. If ih's simple means of ascer- taining the belief of each soldier were employed, when first received in the hospitals, many a noble fellow would descend into an honorable grave strengthened and cheered by the blessings of his religion, wic, under the present system, owing to the aggravated nature either of nis wound or @isense, is unable, when the minister of religion cémes to him. to declare nis religious beitef. This is the case especialy with our Catholic sick and wounded. Would it not be well, therefore, that, for the above reasons, the inttle red flag, and the addition of the name of tue religion of each soldier added to the card that bangs over his bed, be adopted in all our military bor pitals. W ith the greatest respect and purest Intentions I éffer the above suggestions to the proper author. ities. Yours respectfully, Civgs. Pottce Matrers.—First Precinct —E. We judge them te be the same party that were seen at Vienna las: evening. THE BATTLE PROGRESSES. Sees iy We have news from the vicinity of Fairfax sta- tion that heavy firing has been going on this morning, apparently in the vicinity of Mansasns, as though the action of yesterday there is still in Progress. This fact inclines us to the belief that the current engagement there is a general one between most of General Pope's army and most of the rebel army. The manner in which most of Jackson's force suddenly disappeared as it were lest evening from the vicinity of the Orange railroad, looks to us like a retrogade movement on J.’s part to aid his own rear until the rebel army corps may be able to get down to support it. We will, bow- ever, probably be in the dark in Wasnington concerning the perticulars of this battle for at least twenty-four hours. THE TWELFTH PENNSYLVANIA CAV- ALRY. We have the following farther particulars ‘n reference to the 12th Pennsylvapia cavalry, which was Sccused of skedaddling recently, in # skir- mish near Manassas. On last Tuesday, August 26, the regiment was ordered away from Manassas against the proteste- tions of the @olonel, to Gainesville, where they encountered two regiments of rebel infantry, end ‘what was supposed to be a brigade of infantry in the woods. The 12th Pennsylvania cut their way through a column which had gotten in their rear, and retreated in order towards Bristow Station, where they were obliged to cut thelr way through another force of rebels. Arrived at Manassas, they found their old camp entirely in rebel possession, and the Federal bat- teries turned against them. Here again the cavalry cut their way through, and went on to- wards Fairfax, and thence to Alexandria, arriving at the latter place at 8 o'clock on Wednesday night. The regiment was not, as stated, 800 strong, but had not more than 600 men, 250 of whom are now wounded or prisoners in the hands of rebels at Manassas. One major, one captair, four first Meutenants, five second lieutenants, were also killed, wounded or taken prisoners. It was not a raid of the Rebels, but an advance in force, and in‘numbers so far superior that the cavalry would have been annihilated. Colonel Pierce, who had been confined to his bed for two weeks, was too ill to take command; and Mejor Titus, who led the troop, was shot, and is now in Rebel hands. The reason for going to Alex- andria was, that there was no other point where provisions or forage could be obtained, and the horses had been on the march twenty-four hours. The statement as to the greenness of the horses is confirmed. The regiment had never been drilled since their horses were obtained, three ‘weeks ago; and the horses had never even had a shot fired from their backs. At the retreat some time ago through the Val- ley Col. Pierce was highly and personally com- plimented by Gen. Shields for his bravery and soldierly bearing throughout the retreat, ESCAPED. Sylvester Bailey, of the 5th Connecticut, and Joveph Holmes, ist Connecticut cavalry, who were taken prisoners in the late rebel raid on Catlett’s Station, arrived in the city last night, having escaped from their captors while being taken through the woods of Fauquier, towards Front Royal. They were stripped by the rebels of their clothing, which was superior to their own, and worthless rebel uniforms put on them After making their escape they traveled three days in the woods, and succeeded in reaching Edward’s Ferry, from whence they were- sent here. They confirm our statements In regard to the attacking force being entirely of cavatry, which numbered some two or three hundred, under Fitzhugh Lee. Bostox, Aug. 28 —The meeting to-night to bear Gen. Fremont was ene of the greatest de- morstretions ever known In this city. The Tre mont Temple was crowded an hour before the time, and when the General appeared, the waving of hate end handkerchiefs and cheeriag were long continued. Meetings in the lower bell and street were beld at the same time, to each of which General Fre mont was presented. General Fremont spoke at some length, toveh- ing upon the war and ite resuity, and was atten- tively Listened to by the large audience.
