ENEMY HOLD THE BRIDGE. le A BATTLE, ALSO, AT BRISTOW STATION eee HOOKER’S DIVISION ENGAGED, DRIVES THE ENEMY BACK TO MANASSAS. ae OUR LOSS THREE RUNDRED 3 SDS THE ENEMY’S STRATEGIC MOVEMENT UNFOLDED. —.—_—_ THE CONFEDERATE ARMY MASSED AT WHITE PLAINS, IN FAUQUIER COUNTY. ——_o—— THE ENEMY IN A TRAP. SSE TE, It turns out that the cannonading beard nearly allday yesterday by persons in Fairfax county, was that ef an engagement between Scanlon’s brigade, ef Gen. Cox’s division, and a force of the rebels, considerably outcwmbering them, at Bull Run, the contest being for the possession of the railroad bridge at that point. We believe that the rebels retained possession of it at night fall, but have every reaseon to think that Scan- lon must have dislodged them from it at an exrly hourthis morning. Last night he certainly ex- pected to be able to do so. Our impression is that bis loss throughout the day’s skirmishing was inconsiderable. ‘The main engagement of yesterday, however, ‘was that of Hooker’s division, with a consider- able rebel force, at Bristow Station. It appears that the movement of the enemy on Friday, from the south bank of the Rappalan nock, via Jeffersonton, in the direction of Little Weshington, (which the Star described at length some days since,) was actually designed to throw the mcat of the rebel army across the Rappaban- nock at the base of the Blue Ridge. This was done, and it is this morning ascertained here that it was yesterdey morning, probably, for the most part, massed at or near White Plains, in the valley between the Blue Ridge and Bull Run ranges, seven or nine miles northeast of Warren- ton. At an early hour yesterday morning Hooker's division (doubtless dispatched to that point by Gen. Pope on account of the affeir there of the night before) came up with a large rebel force about Bristow Station, with whom he had « heavy ‘engagement, lasting nearly all day. In the course of it Hooker drove the enemy step by step beck to the vicinity of Manassas Junction Our total loss in killed, wounded and missing in the day’s engagement there was about 300. Gen. Pope is said to regard the affair as a signal Union success. It is evident from these facts that the late skir- mishes en the Rappahannock were little more than feints on the part of the rebels, who simed to get in between Pope’s army and the fortifica- tions around Washington. We opine that hav- ing done so in a measure they will have rather a lively time in getting outof the position they have thus chosen. It is not proper for us to publish any facts con- cerning the movements of the vast Union army now in the enemy’s rear, already made, to punish his temerity. We, however, know them to be such as to incline us to believe that a very few days will see the end of rebels in arms in Vir- ginis. We may add, not improperly, we trust, that not only are the fortifications around this city so gar- risoned, equipped and prepared as to enable them successfully to withstand any attack that such an army as that of the rebels might make upon them, but that there is also a large reserved force of disciplined veteran troops in such 8 position with reference to them, as to make the assurance of their security doubly sure, even without the certain co-operation of the lerge Union force lately upon the Rappahannock. From the facts concerning the movements and poaitions of the rebels we narrate above, it is evi- den} that their purpose is either to put Bull Run hetween themselves and Pope’s army, and while easaylog to prevent (with a comparatively-smal! force) the latter from crossing it, to aesail us In and about our fortifications ; or else to attempt to cross over into Maryland, marching via Leesburg Twenty-four hours, at furthest, will surely solve this problem of their present alms. It matters not which scheme the rebels have in view; as either must inevitably fail, met as it will be by our two united great armies, and the troops in the forti- fications immediately surrounding this city. FURTHER PARTICULARS OF THE BAT- TLE AT MANASSAS JUNCTION. One of the New York batteries, belonging to Sturgis’ corps, under Capt. Van Putcamer, was at Manassas on Tuesday night, and lost four or six pieces in the fight with the Confederates, being surrounded and having neither infantry or cav- alry support. The 12th Pennsylvania cavalry escaped or skedaddled and came into Alexandriu with few missing, about 9 o’clock last night They behaved badly. On Wednesday (yester- day) morning early, General Taylor’s bri- gade, (ist, 9d, 34 and 4th New Jersey volun- teers,) of Mejor General Slocum’s division of the army of the Potomac, was sent by rail to Alan- amas. The troops landed at Bull Run vridge and marched to Manassas, om approaching which place they met a line ef rebel skirmishers,’ bo fell back before them. The brigade continued its march, and on coming within the circle of fortifications at the Junction, which they had no idea were occupied, a heavy concentrated fire of artillery was opened upon them from three dif- ferent directions. Gen. Taylor bad no artillery or cavalry, that of the division not having arrived from the Peninsula, and was consequently obliged to retire out of range behind 8 sheltering ridge While here it is reported that they warmly en- gaged a brigade of rebel infantry. At length, seeing a large force of rebel cavalry making to- ward Bull Run bridge with the evident intention of intercepting his retreat, Gen. T. withdrew his troops across Blackburn’s Ford. To this point the enemy pursued him with horse artiliery, pouring canister into bis ranks with some dam- age, wounding, among others, the General se- verely and his son slightly, and killing Lieut Plume, of the 24 New Jersey regiment. This brigade was a amall, weak one, not num- bering over 1,500 effective men. Its loss at Gaines’ Mill was very severe, and in the present affair it was almost without officers. Its loss is not known, but is pretty severe. THE RAILROAD AND REPORTED APPEARANCE OF THE ENE- MY AT FAIRFAX COURT HOUSE We hear that the postmaster at Fairfax Court House arrived here at an early bour this merning having packed up his goods and mails and left last evening, in apprehension of a Confederate raid upon that point, He saws bright light in that direction efter he left, and thinks some buildings had been fired there. No confirmation of such apprehensions have been received here up to the time of going to press with the second edition of the Star, nor of the report afloat of a battle at Centreville, though the fact of spme skirmishing there js not improbsbie. LATER AND MOST IMPORT peta ENEMY '!N STRONG FORCE A¥ GAINESVILLE. . _— We have information that the enemy Was en- camped some twepty or thirty thousand strong at Gainesville, between Manassas Junction, et o'clock yesterday morning. A large portion of Taylor's New Jersey brigade was captured et Fairfax Station by the rebel cavalry, some five hundred of which were seen between Centreville and Fairfax Court House yesterday noon, and ere supposed to be the same that made the sbove capture From the fact that the enemy last night burned. the bridges at Accotink and Pope’s Run, it is supposed that they are meving off in some other direction, and wish to avert pursuit. THE DESERVING OF PRAISE. Mr. James McGilvery, attached to Capt. Dena’s brauch of the quartermaster’s service bere, by his presence of mind, sngecity and energy, ssved « large amount of Government property—horees and mules (1750) and cattle (about 950) from falling into the bands of the rebels on the night before last. The horses and mules were under his eharge, at Centreville, on the way to Pope’s army. On learning of the raid on Manassas, be succeeded in gathering them in good order, and turning their direction, successfully conducted them back ont of all danger; a task made very dificult by the presence of squads of the skedaddling 1%th Pennsylvania Cavalry rushing past his charge in a most disgraceful panic, and refusing to comply with bis appeals to them to rally and guard the rear of the immensely valuable public property in bis charge. A mile or two behind him was the large herd of Government cattle mentioned above, which was also turned back successfully, on receiving timely notice forwarded by Mr. McG. Capt. Davenport, of the Scott cavalry, with « smell command, was pushing his way out to the f-ont at the time, and greatly alded Mr. McGil- very and bis small army of assistance in bringing thelr charge back In safety. REBEL SCOUTS. Three rebel scouts were seen upon the highway near Frying-pan church (in Loudoun county, about 20 miles from tuls city), last evening. We hear that this forenoon there were signs © the presence of rebel scouts in the vicinity of Vienna, Fairfax county. Of course thelr move- ments will be duly watched. THE RAILROAD TRAINS. It was known bere at ncon to-day that the only loss of ratiroad trains occurring In the affairs of the past week in our front was that of the four empty trains of careseized by the rebels ut Mo- nassas on the night before last THE TWELFTH PENNSYLVANIA CAV- ALRY. The 12th Pennsylvania cavalry, that ran so shamefully from the enemy on the night before last, between Bristow Station and Manassas Junction, were SU0 strong when surprised. SKEDADDLED. At630 p.m yesterday, a small guerilla party of rebels skedaddied the platoon of men en duty at Burke's S:ation, fourteen miles out of Alexan- dria. No damage wes sustained that we can bear of. LIEUT. GEN. SCOTT. We learn that Lieut. Gen. Scott writes from West Point that his condition is so much im- proved as that be is now able to take bis daily walks without the assistance of a cane, even. COL. RUGGLES. It is certain that Col. Ruggles (Gen. Pope’s chief of staff) was not captured by the rebels in the late raid on Catlett’s Station. PrRsonaL.—Hon. S. 8. Casey and wife, Ky. Major J. D.
