There is now at the Navy Yard « negro man named Nathaniel Evans, who arrived here recently from Richmond, from whom we get the following : He ssys thathe formerly belonged to H. L Kent, of Richmond, and was sold to J. C. Bryan’ commissary of the 6th Alabama infantry, Col. Gordon, in May last, and until recently has been acting es the latter’s body servant. He was in the seven dsys’ fight with the regiment, and says the regiment which he was with numbered 1,400 when they went in, and could only muster 400 when they came out. The slaughter among the Confederate troops was very great, some of the officers estimating the entire lossin killed, wounded and missing as high as fifty thousand. He saw the Federal prisoners marched to Rich- mond, and was told thet 9,500 had been bagged | Some of them were put at onoe in Libby’s to- bacco warehouse, but the most of them were put on Bell Island. The city, he says, is one vast hospital, about 200 buildings being used aseuch. Large num- bers of their sick and wounded have been sentto Amelia Springs, Huguenot Springs, and other places. Most all the families that are able to leave the city have gone to Danville, and at present very few other than the poorer classes re- main. Among the foreigners—especially the Irish and Germans—there Is a great deal of Union senti- ment, and daily some are being arrested for d!s- loyalty. Atonetime, recently, as many as 750 were imprisoned on such charges. Every person who refuses to make change for Confederate notes is arrested and imprisoned. When he left, Gen. Lee’s headquarters wereat Drury’s Bluff, seven miles from Richmond, and he had there a force of from 50 to 75,000 men.
