Reno, with Gud mea landed opposite Cobb's Point, N.C , for tue pur- Pose, itis said, of destroying the locks tn the D'tmal Swamp Canal, bit retired the same wight without effecting his object. Commander Rowan, on the 23d, determined to destroy the canal with the naval forces under bis command. The following embraces extracts from the report of itssuccessful accomplishment. U.S. Steamer Commopore Hevry. Of Etizabeth City, April 25. 5 Str: In obedience to your order I left this place on the 234 inst in the Lockwood, with the Whit-- head aed Putnam in company, each with an officer and a detachment of men on board; the Lockwood towing the wrecking schooner Emma Slade, with the apparatus for blowing up the banks, to block up the Albemarle and Chesapeake anal. At the mouth of North river we were joined ty the Shawsheen, having in tow a schooner wtich had been sent the dsy before to Roanoke Island to be filled with sand. In the afternoon of the 934 fifty men were land- ed on each bank, while # launch with a heayy 12- pounder was sent up the canal, and with this #, we moved up two miles, examining the be-ks to find the best place for operetions. I concluded to place the obstruction near the Mouth, that the men while at work might be un- der cover of the gunsof the steamers, and the enemy be prevented from moving it The schooner was sunk just inside of tbe canal, and with brush, stumps, rails, trunksef Leavy trees, and earth, the passage was obstructed from the schooner about fifty yards above. Werwere occupied from noon till sunset of the 23d, and from 730 a.m till half an bour after sunset of the 24th. Earth wes thrown in by hand from each bank as far a8 could be; but we had no wheelbarrows to carry it into the middle. * * * * It would be well to send a steamer there dilly unt!! the timber is well water soaked and sunk. Very reapectfully, your ob’t serv’t, C. Fivaser, Lt. command!ng. Commander C. J.
