The Secesh can indeed hardly realize the fact when he arrests them; yet, when they discover their condition, no attempt is ever made at re- sistance, though he generally goes without es- cort—frequently without arms of any kind. One evening, he rode out in a buggy to the residence of Gen. @. W. Harding, and found him riding on horseback about beautiful “This is Gen. Harding, I believe?” said the ace Sir, servite,”’ replied th “Yes, » at your de,’’ rey e President ot Harrivon’ Military Board. “I have oalled for the purpose of arresting you,’’ said the Sheriff. ith awild look the General asked, with- out detnanding the reason for his arrest— “Have you arrested Neil 5. Brown?’’ “No, Bir, id the Sheriff. ‘Who is Neil 8. Brown?” Collecting his senses a little, Gen. Harding dropped a subject which was an inadvertent confession of guilt. Neil 8. Brown was his associate on the Committee whose business it was to send the young men of Tennessee to slaughter pen. On his way to the Penitentiary, @en. Harding, it is said, declared he should commit suicide, but for the company of Gen. orthington in prison. The poor fellows he caused to be hung in East Tennessee have no company in their narrow house. When first arrested, the General inquired if Colonel Myers had come alone to arrest him. “ Yes,’ said Myers,’ and I am unarmed, (opening his vest as proof of the fact ;) don’t you think one is enough ?"’ All this while he held the reins of the General's horse. On the risoner’s asking permission to take leave of jis family, he was directed to get into the offcer’s buggy, by his side, and was driven by his residence for that purpose. Col. Joe Guild was also seremee ty Myers a short time since. Guild was elected Judge of the Chancery District which embraces Sum- ner county, after this State was forced into re- bellion. He isa lawyer of some ability, and was a billious locofoco politician. In the work of treason, no one commenced earlier, or ran fester. When Myers went to take him, he asked some one he met where Colonel Guild . “Judge Guild? Yonder he s ‘id the citizen, ‘‘on that pony.” Quickening his pace, the Sheriff soon caught up, and ap- pomebing him inquired if that was Colonel uild. “Guild is my name, sir; what will you have?” I have come for the purpose of arresting yeu.”” “ Arrest me !”’ said Guild, with well feigned astonishment; ‘‘I have done nothing worse than thousands have done in the county of Sumner.” “That may all be very true, Colonel Guild; t we determined that those who took front seats at this little show shall keep them throughout. Colonel Guild desired to visit his residence before setting out for Nashville, but Colonel Myers was in a hurry. But the Court is in session,” said Guild ; “surely you will allow me to sign the records.”” “Yes, you can sign them. Send for them, and sign them at the Provost Marshal’s office.’’ The Judge sent for the records and for his family. hen these came, quite a number of citizens came as a committee of condolence. Judge Guild’s female relatives were particu- larly demonatr: . Mrs. G. wished she had just the power, she would drive the Yankee jessians out of the country very quick. “« Yes,” said the officer, ‘‘ but we have the power, and intend to drive the enemies of the country i2.’” “Very woll,”’ said the lady. ‘‘ You need not think you can force our people into the Union.” we We are not particular about that, Madam,” said Myers, ‘but we intend to force the soil FROM GEN.
