THREE O'CLOCK, P. M. OUR MILITARY BUDGET. _~—— LATEST FROM YORKTOWN. ‘The War Department have telegrems from the army before Yorktown Up to about 5 a.m. to-day. From them it is gathered thst lest evening and night there was more or less desultory firing on three or four of the points occupied by the rebets to check the prosecution of thelr work In extend- ing their entrenchments; with success, though not amounting to what might be called an en- gagement. FROM BANKS’ COLUMN The Wer Department have a télegram from General Banks’ column, dated yesterdayevening, which, however, embraces no aews of any late interesting movements, either by bis ermy or that of the Rebel Jackson 1a his front. BLENEER’s DIVISION. The story being publisbed in newspapers say- ing tbatGen Blenker has been superseded by Gen. Rosecrens in the command of bis division is a misteke. Gen. B.'s division bes been or- dered to join the command of Gen. Rosecrans, who ranks Gen. Bienker, and therefore when they may be together will command both, Gen. B. commanding his own division as before under him. This we apprehend to be the true explsnz- Uon of the mistake. COLONEL WILLIaMs. We bear that among the recent presidential nominations of the President was that of Colonel Robert Williams, (Captain of the Sth U. 8. Cav- alry,) now Colonel commanding the Ist Masss- chusetts Cavalry, and also the commander of the three regiments of U.S. volunteers at this time occupying the Island of Hilton Head. Colonel W. is proverbially one of the mort efficient and accomplished officers in the regular service: his present Massachusetts cavalry reziment being proverbially unsurpassed in soldierly qualities by any other regiment in either branch of the service. {t will be recollected that he was General Banks’ Assistant Adjatant General at Baltimore and on the north bank of the Potomac. RELEASED ‘' YROM SOUTHERN RULE AND TYRAN- ny.” The following significant epistle has been re- ceived et the Post Office Department : . County, Tennessee First Assistant Postmaster General. Dear Sir: Being liberated forawhile from South- ern rule and tyranny, I take the earliest opportu- nity to inform you tbat, notwithstanding our post office has been employed by the southern Confederacy, { and my assistants cre loyal to the United States; that when this office came under the rebel government, and the oath was sent to us, we filled it bogusly, end sent it to Richmond without swearing to it. If you will hunt up my last report for the quar- ter ending July 1, 1561, you will see from it that Tam Joyal. I bavein my hands sll the money that has been received at this office since lat April, 1861. Of course we had to adopt the five and ten cent rates, in order to hold the office for our con- venience, and also a loyal community. Your friend, BAVY YARD. The French frigate Gassendi left the yard this morning at six o’clock. A large number of schooners have lately er- rived with coal, and are discharging their car- gore. The Jacob Bell has had ber old botier taken out, to make place for a new one FROM BANKS’ COLUMN. New Marner, Va., Aprii 24 —Yesterday the Ohio cavalry reconacitred the Gordonsville road ten miles beyond Harrisbury, at which point they took two of Askby’s cavalry snd one infantry Man prisoners, together with several horses Jackson is reported to be reating near Swift Run Gap on the Blue Ridge, with Ashby’s rear guard on the Shenandoah. The cavalry come tn sight of Cub Run, where a rebel picket was sta- tioned, who had placed combustibles under the bridge to burn it on our approach. No doubt exists tbat Jackson has been reio- forced since bis stampede from Marrisburg, but to what extent {fs not certainly known A portion of Ewell’s brigade joined hima day or two 2x0 Before our advance to Woodstock, there were three to five thoussnd rebet troops in and sround Staunton; but thelr present location is not known A large fire wes seen lust atgbt frow Harrisor- burg, which ts thought to bave been (Le burning of the bridge over Cub Rua. it is painful to witness the credulity of the tn- babitan s of the rural districts which we have occupied The most ridiculous ubsurdities re- garding the appearance and barbarous character- istics of the Yankees find ready bellevers in oth- erwhe intelligent female circles For lnstance, it is supposed that our troops wear natural or art- Micial horns, end gore the wounded on the battle field; that we show no quarter, and even burn women and children at the stake, drinking the warm blood of their msle relatives and friends. It is unnecessary to add that our presence changes the view to a considerable extent.
