Some elght men and toys were seated round the room on benches, each engaged in filling fuses with the composition, which consists of meal powder, nitre, &c., which is not considered dangerous to hendle, vet the utmost care is taken that an acci- dent may net happen. The casing of the fuse ts made of paper, which is placed in a hole in the centre of a piece of iron, and the composition is putin in small quantities with a spoon, bein driven down very bard with an iron punch. I[t ts supposed that in driving In the composition there must have been a bit of gravel in ft on which the punch struck and sigan a sperk, setting fire to the powder near by. Gale, wa-dex Tae Pain at rex Intant ALUM —The citi. zen of Washington, or the sqjourner in it, cannot pend an hour of the day or evening more agree- ably than at the fair, now to a generous pub- lie, for the benefit of the Infant Asylum. Every gentleman and lady, master and miss, bes afew dollars that it would gladden their charitable hearts to give for the support of some forty tender infants, t upon public charity. And what charity can appeal so strongly to our sym thetic natures, as that of an orphaned or d Pact aos up whilst i peqpo neem raging a open common, or per! howe, filthy alley, or pig sty” Thishas happened more than once in the experience of this benevo- lent institution. The infirmities of buman nature i ead themselves with increasing cruelties and crimes. It is the Christian’s duty to provide agairet the perpetration of crimes, and to relieve buman sufferings and wants. The conspicuous ebarity of the gocd Sisters, in receiving and caring for these waifs of human existence, isa shining examp'e of Christian virtue—a disinter- ested charity, whose exampie, it is b 8 will pot be ioet upon e evil passions that se bar- barously rule the world. No onecan have duties so Ing as not to be able to visit the fair once, or oftener, during {ts continuance, and familiar- ize themselves with its purposes and objects, a ive encouragement to this great work of charity. ficsum is too small to be thankfully received and ‘to do its sbare in the Christian work of prevent- ing erime, relieving suffering, and saving heip- less human infants lives. There are articles for sale to suit the fancy of the age and the purses of all who patronize the infants’ fair. The managers of the falr would be glad to have the big-hearted, generous gentlemen in uniforms, who are at all times liberal with their ge Ob) tee faira visit. Lt isalsoa matter of in it to some to know tbat there is a lunch room, bountifully jed with the best the market afford«. The invitation is to every one, old and young, to visit the fair, and they will leave it wiser happier than when they went. Cross Fratne —A few da: since Thomas Ra- ley, residing near the brick bridge on New Jer- sev avenue, procured 2 warrant for the arrest of ‘Wm. Sadler, Catharine Sadler, Barney Riswick, Samuel Jones, Andrew Chriseldine and Rebecca Burger, a lot of children aged from seven to ten 8, residing in his neighborhood, charging hem with being nolsy and wi'h throwing stones. They were all ai by officer Barkeley, and the trial was ruled to take place last evening at the station house, and when the time came round the children and the oe foe mate turned out en masse to see what would be done with the disor- derly young:ters, Mr. Raley was present, but unfortunately, owing toa ing in the family of one witness and sickness in another, the case had to be put off until tnisevening. The women who accompanied the accused children declared, that they were much better bebaved than Raley’s children, and that before he complained of other People’s children he should correct hisown Mr. Raley then offered to give security that bis chil- dren would keep the peace if the others followed his example; but this oe refused to do, being conteat to let theirs stand the trial and bear the | consequences. Steady Advance of Our Positions. somipsl vatiaadans The Case of General Smith. — > 4 Mutiny in the Rebel Camp Two Rebel Regiments Firing Into Each Other. eeenecen omnes The Enemy's Strategy. {Per Telegraph from Baltimore } Caxr Bronte Yorrown, Va., April 23—10 a. m.—I have barely time te write you that evcry- thing is progressing satisfactorily here You bave no idea of the immense labor of the campaign at this point. It is however cheerf :!- ly performed day and night, by the whole army, as all rest under the conviction of its necessity to Insure success, and that it will so insure it. Hourly our works approach those of the enemy. We have already constructed s me well within the range of the rebel fortifications, thanks to our sharpshooters, who unerringly pick their men off whenever attempting to work a gun to stop the Progress of our earthworks. ‘So fatal and constant is ther fire, that the rebels seem to have abandoned the idea of opposiag our occupation of points from which to make the grand final attack. The charge of drunkenness in the late Lee's Mill engagement uttered against Gen. W. F. Smith, turns out to be utterly unfounded. it bas been disproved by many of the first and Most re'lable officers in the army who were close by him throughout the whole affair. On Monday last there was firing between two rebel regiments, causing much commotion tn our camps. It certinued so long and was so severe that it was mistaken et first for a regular assauit on our outposts. One cf their regiments was firing into another, which returned the fire with equal spirit. We could distinctly see them carrying cif tte dead and wounded. The sffair is believed to have been a mutiny, and measures taken to quell it The Virginians now being conscripted — forced—into the service at the point of the bayo- net, resist as far as they can, more especially being drafted and forced into regiments frou other States, to fill the letter to their respective quotes. It ig supposed the mutiny grew out of something of the sort. From the best information we have bere, the Rebels are collecting as large a force as possible at or near Gordonsville, to theend of a sudden movement either on the columa of Gen. Banke by the time that makes its appearance at Staun ton, or on that of Gen. McDowell, if ne crosses the Rappahannock at Fredericksburg They have a railroad to both points, you will recollect. Their situation here is desperate, they know, and doubtless aim to strike some such blow before the great fight bere cam come off. The Merrimac on the Rampage Again. How She Expects to Dispose of the Monitor. How She Will Be Check-mated. {Per Telegraph from Baltimore | Battimorg, April &, (from Fortress Monroe April 23 )—From tbe refugees that resched here this morolag we hear that the Merrimac Is being plated three feet lower (under water) and sunk iu the water « foot deeper than before. We aleo learn from them that the rebel plan ts to beard the Monitor with twenty men armed with mallets and wedges, prearranged, to wedge up (spike) ber turret port holes in en instant. This was expected, and I am happy :o be able to sey, bas been thoroughly guarded against by changes made in the Monitor's means of defence anne aab CONGRESSIONAL. ——< EXXVIIth CONGR ESS_Secend Session. apenas Tuvaspar, April 24 Senate —Afier the present tion of retitions, Semen J them 425 separate petitions by Senator ery ees lager beer manulacturers and otbers, ageinst roposed tax on thelr L*verage.)
