F. Milligan, Engineer-in-Chief of the Baltimore Fire Dep2rtwent relative to steam engines. Mr. Moore thought steam engines would be useless witout more hosc; and the thing im- Practicable on account of the condition of the streets, and was opposed to committing the cor- Poration. . The Chair did not think the resolution com- mitted the corpr rati-n. It was simply one of in- quity, and to secure an interview with G >vern- ment and the Secretary of War. Mr. Moore did not believe the city would be benefitted by steam. Mr Brodhead hoped the suggestion would be agreed upon. Mr Lloyd said the weter wes not properly dis- tributed as to the Seventh Ward, and until that Ward bad the sgme rights as others, should not vote an sppropriaticn. Resolution paseed. To select seven building lots for public school purposes, ascertain the cost of each, and report the same throuzh the Mayor tothe two Boards. One of the seven lots shell be located in the most desirable and available post fon in each ward of the city, which sball be suffictent for erecting upon ita Union ward school buiiding, according to the most approved modern style of School architecture, of sufficient capacity to ac- commedzt= 500 pupiis 24. Mr. Richards stated thet the resolutions did not look to an immediate ee excepting tbe 8100 for plans, &c. He further thought that this was the most propitious time to take action. If the scat of Government wes to remain bere, and all the evidences tended that way, then we may expect a large increase of population, and as a matter of consequence the vacant | ts would all be teken up. He therefore thought no better opportunity would occur to make the selection of jots, when they are much cheaper than they will be some months hence. He stated that at present about 3,500 children were attending our public schools, which are not by any means good schools, and the present cost of sustaining thei !¢ $6,000 — annum, which is the Interest on £100,000 Divide this sum by 7, end we have $14,285, a sum large enough to build a modern schooi house in each ward, capable of accommodating over 500 pupils. If we do nothing more then to select — ‘we eball perform an act for which the city wi ever thank us. Mr EKdmoaston moved to refer the resolutions to the commit'ce on schoo); adopted.
