A secesh rumor is afloat alleging that Blenker’s division of the army of the Potomac have been “driven in’’ by the rebels from Warrenton Junc- tion to Manassas, in which there is not a scintilla of truth. One of them was a French lady, returning to France ; the other ‘was proceeding to join her husband in Baltimore. Copies of the Richmond Examiner and Dis- Patch of this morning were received. The former is printed on buta half sheet. They are barren of news. The official report to Governor Clark (of N.C.) states that the rebel loss at Newbern was as fol- lows. Viz: 61 killed, 101 wounded, and 413 miss- ing and prisoners—total 578. Wm. M. Gwin, late Senator from California, arrived at Richmond yesterday, from Washing- ton. He isa native of Virginia. Captain John H. Morgan, who isstyled the “Marion of the war,”’ also arrived at Richmord yesterday. On board the Monitor, to-day, the vote of thanks passed by the New York Chamber of Commerce, to Lieut. Worden and the officers ana crew of that vessel, war read to all hands. Great enthusiasm Was ekhibited. Lieut. Worden will resume cofmmand of the Monitor as goon as he re- ttvers from bis injuries, which, according to the latest accounts, he is expected to do very shortly. The weather continues pleasant, and favorable jeburg, —He Charges the Rebels through the Town—The Rebels Make a Hasty Retreat. Mrppixsure, Va., April 4 —Col. Geary’s ad- vance encountered 300 of Stewart and White’s cavalry, and a force of infantry, at Middleburg, Va., last Saturday. He marched from Philomon in the morning, and drove in the tebtl pickets outside of Middleburg, when he entered the town ard discovered the Infantry jn retreat and the cavalry posted to make a stand. A gun was placed to command the main street, and the 28th, Well deployed, advanced by all the approaches to the town, while the main body rushed through it with bayone's fixed, and on a ‘ double quick,” driving the enemy before them. The enemy made a baitin a hollow beyond the town, evi- dently maneuvering to draw out the Micbigan cavalry in pursuit, so thelr infantry might flank them. Compantes of the 28th now opened on them from behind stone fences with their rifles, when the cavalry desed eff precipitately. A gun of the 28th, in the centre of the town, now opened upon them, and drove them from a thicket two miles distant, every shell exploding in the woods, The chargethrough the town was fraught with great excitement. Knapsacks were thrown aside In the street as the men rushed forward. Over coats snd blankets lined the sides of the road Stores were epcediiy closed, women screamed, horses dashed forward. Everything was excite- ment butin good order. Col. Geary dashed on at the head, and one time was within twe hundred yards of the Rebel cavalry. Col. Geary’scommand has scouted the country as far down as Aldie, from which place itreturned as far as Sinckersville to assist at WV inchester, but the battle there was decided before {t could get further [Middleburg is «handsome post-borough, of Londonn county, Virginia, on a small affivent of the Potomac, one hundred and forty-three miles from Richmond. It has a population of about eight hundred, and contains three churches, an academy, seven stores, sud one tobacco factory.] UP THE TENNESSEE. From the Tennessee River Expedition—Sr fl Preparing — Lines Approaching — Rebel Forces—Buell Coming Near —Corps d’ Ay- mee—Grant to Take tha Field — Hot Weather—Milttary Telegraph [Spectal Correspondence of Cincinnati Gazette.) Savasnan, Tenw., April 1 —The expedition has accomplished nothing as yet that can be laid before the public. Beauregard’s advance camps at Corinth are within six miles of our advance from Pittsburg Landing, and the rebel advanced camps at Purdy are within five miles of ours in front of Cromp’s Landing. At Purdy and Bethel the rebels still have only an outpost of only four or five regiments, with a smail force of artillery and cavalry. At Corinth they may have 60,000, including tne 10,000 with- out'arms. They claim 100,000, {and from that on up indefinitely. There seems to be no doubt that they mean to make astand ator near Corinth. They cannot ield that without yielding their entire line of lefenses clong the northern border of the Gulf States. A portion of Gen. Buell’s army was on Sunday morning last within a day’s march of Savannab. Gen. Grent is understood to outrank Gen. Buell, the latter having been confirmed Major General some weeks after Grant. In this case, therefore, Gen. Grant wil! command the whole force, ‘There are rumors, however, that Gen. Halleck will take the field here in person, as soon as the Island No. 10 agony is over, and that there will be four or five es @armee organized, Potom:c army fashion, with the Major Generals Grant, Smith, Wallace, Buell and McClernand as com- manders. Take them (the rumors, not the Gen- erals) with a discount. The wooden gunboats continue dropping occa- sional shells into the rebel batteries at and above Eastport, Miss. Little importance is attached to their river defenses. General Grant is to take the fleld in person at Pittsburg Landing to-day, unless the plans should be changed. The weather is sultry; delightful mornings and evenings, but decidedly too hot for northern constitutions at noon. The roads are admirable, and the country toward Corinth isa hich upland, about half under cultivation, the rest wooded, through which there are few obstacles to the easy movement of a large army. Some cotton is being brought in from the coun- under escorts of our troops, to prevent the from burning it. Seventy-five bales came in that yesterday. Briefly, Ws all the news that ought to get into print. T've sent it all by telegraph, but think it as Iikely as not the dispatches are still floating around in Government steamboats, on their way to Cairo. We’re having a telegraph built from here to Nashville, across the country, that will be done before long, but it is exclusively for mil- itary purposes. AGarTE. THE WAR IN THE SOUTHWEST. _ Letter from New Madrid. [Correspondence of the Cincinnati Gazette } Camp IN THE Fixip, near New Madrid, March 23.—Little of stirring interest bas occurred here since the date of my last epistle from this point. Most of the troops still occupy their old camping grounds in the fields around the town, but gen- eraliystwo or three miles from it The division under Gen. Stanley, composing the Ohio regi- ments, is cam) In a beantifal gel ai, about two miles from the river. Those of Gen. Paine and Gen. Hamilton lie still farther to the north and cast, while the divisions commanded b: Gens. Plummer and Palmer are stationed at dif- ferent points on the river bank several miles be- low the town with iad A cut off the com- munteation between the rebel garrison at Island No. 10 and thelr supplies below. Whether they succeed In doing this effectually is not quite certain. After the capture and occu- pation of the forts at the place by our troops, the rebels were in the habit of landing their supplies ata point called Merriwether’s Landing, some thirteen miles below this place on the opposite side of the river, aud thence transporting them overland to the Island. Subsequently, General Plummer, by Gen. Pope’s order, plan' a bat- tery on the western side of the river below their usual pn place, and thus put a stop to this means of recelving supplies Whether making alanding at some point still further down the river, and increasing the length of the land route they will still be able to maintain communica- tion, do not krow. The land | Merriwether’s Landing is reported to be Possible thatthe swampy, and at the present e of be mostly overflowed; still, it rebels may find some means of making the tran- sit.
