"The times have been, ‘That when the brains were out the man would die, Ana there an end; but now, they rise again, With twenty mortal murders on.thelr crowns, And push us from our stools ”” So with the superstitions of sailors and sol- tiers. They have more lives than —, a The brains have been knocked out Colonel Russell falls dead in the cannonade ‘one many times, but here it comes Boa > ay th raters, pagent i ; @ sol was fhe wind of the balls. Nom sequitur, says the nD. @ wind of a cannon ball never hurts any- body, for many reasons, the first of which that there is no such a neyo The air displaced by the ball closes instantly behind it, but has no lateral effect. This is proved in various ways, but is placed beyond cavil or question by the common oc- currences in every severe cannonade. For instanoe, the dispatch just received from Fort Donelson says “a shot struck the Ppilot-house of the St. Louis, passi h it, between the pilot's legs, without injuring him.’ Wh: did not the wind of that ball at least bark shins? The fact is that military abounds in eases which prove that cannon balls pass in gracing contact with all of man’s body and never do the slightest harm, except on the parts actually struck. They have smashed clean through hats and helmets, razing the hair; they have cut off ears close to the skull, arms close to the side, one thigh close to the other, and yet the adjacent parts are left as sound as ever. An instance is given of a heavy shot striking a rank of marching men in the flank, takin; off the right leg of the first, of the third, an: of the afth man, of course between the legs of the others, and yet the left legs of the wounded men were uninjured, and the other men knew nothing abeut it. According to the wind theory, their legs should have been bad- ly injured. But how account for the death of men in ac- tion whose skins are unbroken, save by the wind theory? Easily, as thus: The vital internal organs Goat, as it were, in a yielding medium. Press your hand into the pit of a man’s stomach slowty, and you may bag orp the organ with- out any pain or injury; but plant a swift blow there with your fi ind you double the man up with pain; perhaps kill him ee but there will not be the slightest outward mark. Hence, in boxing, a blow belew the belt is in- deed foul Press hard upon a man’s left side, and the elasticity of the ribs, aided by the elastic car- tilages at each end, allows t depression to be made—consequently the heart and lungs to be yay aside; and yet every thing comes back to its place witheut pain or injury; but a swift blow over the same part witha club, ora fall from a house upon a hard substance, may fracture the ribs, drive the sharp, broken oints through the membranes, or even para- yee the heart and kill the man outright, without leaving a blemish on the skin. Standing once in the bow of a vessel, as she bore down upon a hostile battery, my eyes caught the first flash of a cannon, and quicker than one could wink twice the ball came crashing through the bulwarks, and smote down a comrade, before my ear caught the re- port, which he, alas! was too far gone to hear. Sani ea shot struck — full upon the 5; but being partly spent in a the wood, its foree was further bro! 4 bocy, and it fell to the deck with him. No blood was drawn, but the internal parts were so smashed that he was hardly got down the cockpit alive. Soldiers and sailors have other superstitions about spent balls. The old soldier loves to re- tail them to the recruit, upon whom he looks down as sophomores do upon freshmen, or as our regular officers do upon volinteers, and with as little reason, few of them ever having seen such herd fighting, for the Mexigan war was but @ sort of dress Spe inst a poor, weak enemy, in the wi of which there was less blood shed than in a Napoleonic skirmish The old soldier, I say, will tell you of the greenhorn, who, seeing a spent ball just moving on the ground, tried to stop it with his foot, but had it cut clean off, instanter. The fact 18, 8 cannon ball, partly spent, ricochets and rolls with just the same force as it bad been rolled by 2 man’s hand, no more. The force depends upon its weight and velocity of course. Mortal wounds, however, without bloodshed or breach of the skin, are not commonly made by spent balls, but those having great velocity, and according to my theory they should be more frequent by smooth bore than by rifled cannon. The balls rotate swiftly on the axis as fly, and in directions according to the force acting upon them as they leave the 5 Now take a 32-pound shot and hold it before &@ man’s thigh, on the outside, or before his ribs, in such wise that —— push it forward, and he stands firm, the ii will pass, by rea- son of his flesh yielding, one inch ; that is, b being pressed inwards one inch. The ball thus have moved through a om shot, lightning, strikes him in the same direction, it may roll over the skin without breaking it, but may, nevertheless, dash it inward with such sudden shock as to lyze its vital the internal parts are Fe oye marked, and even pummeliled to a jelly, there were no outward marks. ————— e _ Ax ELorswent.—A day or two since a man and woman put up at one of our excellent city and took a room for a few regis- tered as man and wife, and ev, swimmingly until ay, when comes of true ove” ph paper Ts turn E ef E refused to i further towards its ocean bed of felicity. principal cause of this trouble in the current was the pe ne see pron cin lay - aforesaid woman, vy Witt.
