Ove hundred and fifty Confederates were also Eilted and wounded, mostly out of the Sth Vir- ginia and 13th Mississippi. There were 44 graves of the Pederais found. After this Bali’s Bluff tight, 2 Louisiana regiment came to Loudoun, but they staid only a few days and returned. ‘The following were the officers of the South Car elie: and Mlasissippi regiments: Colonel 4th South Carolina, Blending; 17th Mississippi, Featherstone; 15th Mississippi, Barksdale; 16th Mississippi, Burke Kelley; 2ist Mississippi, Humpbreys. it Legine now to be acknowledged by those who were on the spot, and know what they are talk- ing about, that the Virginia troops are equal, if not superior, to any in the field of the Confederate army. Notwithstanding the grest brag of the eh! 'y of South Carolina, it is charged against them tha! they were the first to break the renks and run st Bull Run. A large number of desertions have taken place from the North Carolina and Georgia regiments. They are tired of Sighting in Virginia, and tired of the war. ‘The time of the Loudoun troops is ont on the 2d of April. Frao Steamer Benton, Of Island No. 10, April 2. Hon. Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy: Last night an armed boat expedition was fitted out from the squadron and the land forces at this point, under command of Colonel Roberts, of the 42d Illinols regiment. The tive boats comprising the expedition were in charge of First Master J. V. Johnson, of the St. Louis; assisted by Fourth MasterG P. Lord, of the Benton; Fourth Mester Pierce, of the Cin- cinnat!; Fourth Master Norgan, of the Pittsburg; and Master’s Mate Scanilie, of the Mound City; each with a boat’s crew of ten men from their respective vessels, carrying in all one hundred men, exclusive of officers, under command of Colonel Roberts. At midnight the boats reached the upper or No. 1 fort, and, pulling directly in its face, car- ried it; receiving only tne harmless fire of two sentinels, who ran on discharging their muskets, while the rebe! troops in the vicinity rapidly re- treated. Whereupon Col. Roberts spiked the six gurs mounted in the fort, and retired with the boais uninjured. The commanding officer represents all under his command, from their coolness and determjnation, as being reedy to perform more hezardous ser- vice had It been required to the fulfilment of the object of the expedition. BaLTmmorE, April 4 ers (from Fortress Monroe, April 3 )—The weather is clear and pleasant here to-day. Everything is progressing in the most Satisfactory manner. The rebels fired several shots from Sewall’s Point last night on the transports in the harbor, some of the shells falling within &fty feet of ves- Sels loaded with horses. A reconnoissence was made yesterday from Newport News to Watt’s creek, a distance of nine miles. Theenemy appeared 3,000 strong, and opened with cannon on our force, but their balls passed entirely over them. Our batteries were immediately got in position and opened on them; wh nthe entire body broke and fied in great confusion, keeping out of range. The object of the reconnolssance being accomplished, our troops returned. The whole country through which they passed, formerly the garden spot of Virginia, was found devastated, with but one house left standing! Houses, fences and trees had been burned by tha retreating 1ebela. There areno signsof the Merrimac yet, and from her long delay the opinion is rapidly gain- ing ground that she will not venture to come out in. She basa flae field to cpernte tr If she should triemph over the Monitor; and if she fails tocome now, it istheught she must be efraid to run any risks. An officer of the Sem!nole says that he read a Savannab peper of the 23d ult., which acknowl- edged a terrible rebel defeat at Pea Ridge, and udmitted that there was no use to attempt to con- ceal the fact. ‘The English steamer Racer arrived here this morning and saluted the flag, which was re- sponded to by the fort; and some compliments passed between the French vesseis and the Racer, oceasioning quite a cannonading A second reconnotss:nce was also made yester- dey to Big Bethel, when the enemy was found to have returned and occupied the earthworks in force. On seeing our scouts they threw shells into the woods occupied by our troops on our Previous advanes et that point, but they were unoccupied, and no damace was done. It not being the pur- pose of the advance to engage the enemy, no re- sponse was made to their guns. The flag of truce to-day brought down an offer of the French steamer, from Norfolk. Rteambeats conveying troops to Newport News Were repeatedly fired at from Sewali’s Point and & rebel gunboat, this afterncon. No damage was however done, as far as we can learn. FROM WINCHESTER. Wixcn=stzr, April 1.—Fourteen Rebel victims of Sunday's battle were seen to-day at a house nesr Newton. “Six bad died; the remainder were wounded. They had been deserted by their own physicians, but were cared for by ours. Subsequently, two Rebel soldiers paid a visit to their wounded friends, and were cap- tured. Woopstocx, Ve7, April 2—Afternoon —The Rebels when retreating yesterday attempted to burn a bridge over the creek near Narrow Pas- sage, but it was extinguished. The megnificent railroad bridge, 100 feet high, over the same stream , was burnt by Jackson when retreating from Gen. Shields. A beautiful grey stallion, said by contrabands to be Col. Gillis in bis report says: “I learn that the Confederates’ battery on Green Island is abandoned. Several houses in sight are burning this morning. I send to Port Royal a risoner who was taken in the marshes by the Release. His statement accompanies this.’ From the statement of the contraband, Loudon Middleton, who was picked up by the steamer Norwich, we gather the following particulars of affairs in Dixie: “« His master was Wm. P. Folton, of Savannah. He left that city on the 224 Merch, coming by bed of White Bluffand Green Island, to Raccoon evs. All provisions are scarce at Savannah, and very dear, particularly bacon, rum, liquors, and “such like.’”? Fresh beef is more "plenty, but ft costs 25 to 30 ceats for what used to sell at 6,8 and 10 cents und. Eggs were at 50 cents per dozen. dhickens $1 el get Tea scarce. Folks are going and coming. Some who had left the city are returning, and they are sending “the negroes and cotton” inland, and are moving all the cash mo to Macon. They threaten to burn the city if they should be unable to hold it, and are in daily expectation of an attack. They bad given up the idea of defending the Savannah river by mears of “‘torpedoes,”’ because one of the principal men who was sinking them got drowned while down in a diving bell. He knows of no raft near Fort Jackson, neat which Tatnall is on board the Savannah (late the Everglade.) WVnen he was last near Thunder- belt, some time since, they had eight guns mounted. There is a ba! Green and Skiddaway Islands are abandoned, except by a few cavalry. The guns from Green Island were taken 8 fortify Bewley, and those from Skiddaway to Montgomery, a part of Bew- ley. but about three-quarters of a mile separate. Both were on the W: ymingbing river, which runs from Raccoon Keys up, making Green Island the first land to the northeast going, and thence run- ning up to Bewley, Montgomery and White Bluff. They expect us to cross Skiddaway Island, and have guns and pickets at the two bridges to cut them away, and fight our troops on their arri- val. The first bridge is reckoned to be five miles fcross from the cupola house, (last night burned by the Rebels,) near the Skidaway (abandoned) battery. ‘TRACHING NEGROES THAT THERE Is A Gop AND a H&RRavTER.— Editor Star: | heard Mr. Bing- ham say in the House the other day that “‘ eleven of the southern States declare it is a crime, pun- ishable by indictment and imprisonment, to ‘teach a human being ‘to know’ that there is even a God or a hereafter.” I know this is not, or was fe . ear ago, true of South Carolina, “ ‘the hot slavery.”’ 1 know of two Protestant Epis- copa ministers of that State (and yet | know very tie about the State or the Boron of 1t) who studjed divinity at the Theological Seminary near Alexandria oe dae yr the Purpose of preach- ing to and Soaching the negroes of their own and = ate tations; and I know, too, that to them once every Sabbath, and‘ tat th they or ladies of their families taught them from the Bible and catechism every other day.
