Mr. Syle.—Below will be found a communication from Rev. Mor- sell, defining his position and giving a variety + of reasons fer omitting the prayer of thanks- giving for the success of the Union arms. : . The communication ts courteous In tone and in j Keeping with the clerical cloth up to the con- + cluding paragraph, which betrays a spice of | “original sin.’ Our reverend correspondent ad- vises us to ‘Study to be quiet and to mind our own business.’ My dear sir, we have had just such advice tendered us for years by all soria of people who find publicity as to their doings un plezsant, from the big contractor, engaged in the “ghoddy"? business, down to 3 cent policy deal- ets, and the Dick Swivelers whose chronic ‘‘mis- takes of a night’’ bring them up at the watch- house for safe keeping. But seriously, what sort of wares would news- paper folks turn out if they acted on the precept of our correspondent” Would be, for instance, care to reada paper conducted on the ‘quiet’? “mind your own business’ plan. We dare say not. The labored excuses for the omission of the Prayer will strike the reader as altogether incon- clusive, we think : Mr. Ed. Star: | regret very much the necessity of a reply to the article in your peper of Friday, 23th ultimo. A communication from @ correspondent signed “East End.’ and your editorial comments, have rendered this communication necessary. The author of the arti-le above referred to is unknown to me, and speaks solely his sentiments, not mine. It 1s correct in the denial of the statement ‘‘ that 1 did read the prayer of Spacnivies for recent victories, and deliverance from the terrors of slege and blockade;”” but the remainder of its contents ex) no opinion of mine, or of the congrega- tion. 1 think it could not bave been writfen by any attendant on my ministry. I reply to your editorial comments, as ] presume them to be, I state that I am no secessionist, in feelin or theory. I have never held it asa right, but om the contrary, have always thought the whole theory to be a grievous wrong, and I think that ite is its best comment 4s te its nature. I moat po fatal that it is no part of my creed. Iam disloyal. Loyalty is with mea rinciple which does not depend on the rise and LL of rties, the coming {n or going out of adm!nistrations. It is mon bey saplndape eer ofa supreme power ing to our Constitution. resting in the executive, legislative and judiciar: y La ea ee As supreme. it extends over ind{- vidaals, and no “State allegiance’’ can exempt the citizea from the obligation of obedience. You have not given my reasons for the omission of this prayer. In justice to myself and congre- gation IL state these reasons: First. It was addressed to a portion and not the whole of the clergy of the diocese. It cannot be affirmed that the reasons for thanksgiving for vic- tories did not apply as fully to other porices, as it did to us. So far as this thanksgiving was ne- cessary, if it was prudent to omii it elsewhere, it might be prudent to omit it here. I conceived that prudence did require its omission. Secondiy. I have endeavored to keep these agi- tating topics entirely out of our coi ition, in sermons and prayers. There is enough of war— preaching end war—praying abroad in the land, to sxtiafy the most intense craving after suth ex- citing topics of discussion. A circumstance which occurred during the civil war in Scotland In the life of Archbishop Leigton may not ties (hy siege introduced here. It was required of the minis‘ers to preach to the ‘‘times.”” When the question was ad- dressed to Robert Leighton he answered, ‘If all the brethren preach to the times may not one poor brother preach for eternity?”’ Let this, then, be my answer to all complainants. | would reserve my pulpit to preach pony ox for eternity. Iam aman of peace and an advocate of peace, and, thank God, its humble messenger. When this war is over we have a prayer of thankestving “* for restori g public peace at home”? exactly ap- plicable to the condition of things in our country, and i would that | could use it to-morrow. This prayer has been selected by the united wisdom of our ecclesiastical authorities as are for such occasions, and | presume that there is nota clergyman jn the diccere who would not rejoice to bave an a of using it. This explains my ressons for the omission of the payer of thanksgiving for victories. It is my inde it judgment, and J do not know whether It expresses the opinions of my mee ation or not. They are in no wise responsible its omission, and, consequently, not to be cen- sured. Loyalty to the chureh Is the best re antee of loyalty to the State, and the history of our church hes been invariable {n its testi- mony against all Parprapenen 3 with political subjecta on the part of its ministers. She would Father allay than excite the jons of men, and as a minister at her altars.
