The correspondent of the Philadelphia Inquirer gives the following particulars of affairs at Man- assas and thereabout : The — of Manassas are really what their name implies. The time was when there were objects which obstructed the range of vision, bat they are all gone now; for miles around we have an unbroken view. On the hills around are the camps still left. and a column of smoke away off to the right indicated that Manassxs was on fire. Our cavalry bad gone there during Monday night, and found the rear of the enemy stili there; but they were firing the remaining property. A cap- tain, by whose side we rode, told us of piles of new secesh clothes, swords, flags, &c ; galloping abead of the reat, we reached the Junction. The sight here cannot be portrayed; the large machine sheps, the station-houses, the Comi sary and Quartermaster store-houses, all in ashes. On the track stood the wreck of a locomotive, and not far down the remains of four freight cars which bad been burned; to the right 500 barrels of flour had been stove in, and 200 barrels of vin- egar and molasses had been allowed to try expe- riments in chemical combination. Some 50 bar- rels of pork and beef had been scattered around inthe mud, and a few hundred yards down the track a dense cloud of smoke was arising from the remains of a factory which had been used for rendering up tallow and boiling bones. About athousaud good hides were stretched ina field close by, upon stakes, and remain unlojureg A car upon the track, which ran to Centerville, a short distance up, had on it the whole effects of a Printing Office, types, cases, all that is needed in an office; a large lot of paper and a Wasbington press, The forms had in them blanks for muster rolls and furloughs. This car will be a great prize for the regiment into whose hands tt falls. An infantry regiment soon came in and commenced to ransack the tents and re- maining stores, for plunder and relics, but the ptinting office remained untouched A single frame shed was left of the ordnance depot, and in it are five thousand cartridge boxes and knapsack§, mostly, however, old ones for which new ones bad been dealt out The hospital stores in the tents of the Seventh Carolina Regiment were south of the Railroad and were uninjured, they contained hundreds of sheets, bedding, blankets, underclothes, medi- cines, large quantities of preparations for making jelites and soups. mostly made in the North In one of the tents was a large lot of blue uni- forms never used; several dred tents and tent poles, many entirely new; , and stores of ail inds But one man wasto be found in the neighborhood; his name was William Howard, and in bis pocket he had a pass from Gen. Tyler, dated last June, allowing him to goto Alexan- dria. He lived near Arlington Mills, and was taken up soon after the batile of Bull Run, and has been kept at work by them ever since. He waa very anxiousto get back, and gave us |nfor- mation that showed how regularly and how the Rebels received news from Washbington, via Alex- andria, they having one man who bas made from two to three trips, with letters and papers, a week, pissing our picketsat night The Rebels, it seems, bave been going for a werk, in fact, for a month, as none returned who went away. He says that about forty thon- sand went down the railroad on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. This, with the sixteen regiments of artillery and cavalry from Center- ville, would make an army of fifty-six thousand for the last week. This statement tallies with everything we have been able to learn from dlf- ferent sources. The retreat was well conducted in a quiet way until Monday noon, when the rear guard became = ickenand fled inconfusion the railroad bridge below Manassas was fired about noon by mistake. and when those remaining heard of it, the last remaining engine, which could have ts- ken all the best of the stores, was blewn up and the cars fred. ‘Then the’ attered, every man for himself, and in the ic but part of the buildings were tired, and but part of the tents; among the ‘left’? were a dozen calssons—the horses belonging to them having died, therefore they could not take the guns by the commen road he rebel army cf the Potomac, from all ap- pearances, has been at times strong in numbers and well entrenched. They may have had ene hundred and fifty thousand men, but we much doubt if they have had over one bundred and ten or one hundred and twenty thourand. Whether they could bave been cut off laat fall or this win- ter, or could have becn driven from Manassas in confusion at any time, is not for us to decide. Such as they were they have gone hence. An examination has revealed the fact that there are no rebel fortifica- tions commanding our left flank, 80 that the advance of our troops from the Potomac would have been eesy. There is considerable property bere which bas been damaged, but not wholly destroyed, amounting in value to many thous- ands of dollars, Including especially flour and bacon.
