Gurra Percua.—Few are aware of the fact that gutta percha is rapidly coming into use as a sub- stitute for india rubber, in the manufacture of bundreds of articles for military and domestic use, expecially those which should be of the same flexibility in all the variations of tempera- ture to which they may b> subjected. While rubber articles not designed to be stiff are very prone to become so in cold weather, the same goods, if manufactured of gutta percha, maintain, under all changes of the atmosphere, a uniform flexibility, while they are free from the smell of vulcanization, and equally as durable and imper- vious to water as goods made of rubber. These are very decided advantages in a large class of military goods, ag may readily be imagined. Brigadier General Kelly writes 10 the New York Gutta Percia Manufacturing Company, February 5: ‘The regiments in my brigade. serving In the Department «f Western Virginia, have, for several months, used your gutta percha blankets and talmas, and [ have yet to hear of a single complaint of them from any source. They are entirely waterproof, and have stood the damp atmosphere of the mountains admirably, and are in as geod condition now as the day they were received. I regard them as necessary for every soldier in the field, and worth very much more than you charge for them, when you take into account their usefulness in contributing to the health of the men.” General Rosecrans writes: ‘Gutta percha Is the best material I know of for waterproof goods,” and Colonel Crothers, aid to Governor Pierpont, also states that “They are emphatically water- proof, and the only article of that kind that 1 have ever seen that is " Our attention has been called to this subject by (Mr. Ambuhire’s, 519 Seventh street, west side, between D street ard Louisiana avenue) a depot for gutta percha goods suitable for military and family uses, the first estabilshment in the Federal Metropolis devoted entirely to the sale of gutta percha goods GeErit Sata on “THe War.”—Last Satur- day night. Hon. Gerrit Smith, of New York, lectured before the Washington Lecture Associ. ation upon *‘The War.” He held that the war power was em ample to enable Congress to burn every schocl- house in Missour!, to prevent their being used as a refuge by rebels; to throw open every jail and prison in Kentucky and Maryland, and arm the prisoners in the defence of the government; and to organize and arm the negroes for the same ser- vice, giving them their freedom fer their pav. Congress had the power to abolish the practice of going to school or to church, or the ins‘itution of slavery, and this Congress was an unworthy one in not having used this power aright in annibi- lat'ng the rebellion He would bave Congress do that, Constitution or no Constitution, which would subserve the best interests of the country. For bimse'f he had no constitutional scruples, and heped that Con- gress would do its duty, untrammeled by red tape or constitutional tape. To save the country we should stop all izhting save fighting the reb- els. and cease listening to the advice of Kentucky. Rather take counsel of William Lloyd Garrison, Wendell Phillips, John Jay, Dr. Cheever, and Fred Douglas. If it were an anti-slavery r-bel- lion, we might take the advice of Crittenden and Garret Davis. Had the President been born in New England, and not in Kentucky, the war would bave been over. Had the counsel cf the Pathfinder been heeded, the rebeliion would have been destroyed. If we compromise with rebels. the Government is dead, dead. He ad- vised that the Goyernment and people take coun- sel of God, do their whole duty, and help to make this nation a shining light to the whole earth, and an example of perfect pol.tical liberty to all the nations IsteREsTING Pcstic Scoot Exutsition —On Friday evening last the female department of the Second District Scbool (Miss EH.
