Taz New Inon-Ciap Steamen.—Her Ar- rival from Mystie—Peculiarities.—The iron- clad war steamer which has been building at Mystic, Connecticut, since September last, has been brought to this port, and now lies at Greenpoint. The vessel—which has not yet received & name—was launched a few days ago, and will be ready to receive her armament in about one month from the present time, when she will be immediately prepared for sea. This is one of the three iron-clad vessels whose construction was ided for at the last session of Congress. e Ericason Battery— also one of them—has made her trial trip, and will soon be afforded an ~ gagrern Hed testing her fighti: ualities. The third ig buildin at Philadelphia, and will soon be clad wit! iron plates similar to those used on the British steamer Warrior The vessel just arrived at this port hes most of her armor on; the engines are finished and partly in; and a large number of workmen are employed on board. The work will be hur- ried rapidly forward. The entire model is new. The vessel has been constructed under a contract of Bushnell & Co., with the ey Department, and was designed by Samuel H. Pook, an experienced naval architect of Boston, who has superin- tended the construction on the part of the Government. The design was to so construct the sides that they should slope inward from the water's edge, and thus cause the missiles which should strike them to glance off. The sides of the vessel, and even the upper deck, present none but curved lines—a point here- tofore unattained to such ad in naval architecture. It is believed ti with the comparatively light iron mail, the sides of the vessel will be entirely impenetrable to the missiles now generally used. The bull of the vessel is about 200 feet over all, extreme breadth 37 feet, and depth of hold 12 feet 6 inches. Her entire capacity is 1,000 tons. Her sides, from the frame which lies on the keel and the “‘ build” two or three feet from the frame, are of solid white oak about fifteen inches thick. This thickness ex- tends two feet above the gundeck. The walls extending tothe upper deck are at the base fourteen inches thick, and at the top thirteen inches, the whole being quite as solid as the sides proper. The width of the upper deck is but twenty-seven feet. The hull eb pee for eighteen guns, but ir ia not designed to use so large a number.— Y. Post. Way Beckxer vip sor Escare prow Fort Dongisox.—The Louisville Journal of Tues- day,in giving an account of the transfer of Gen. Buckner and his staff, besides several other officers, from Cairo to Jeffersonville, Ind., says : At the railroad depot at Jeffersonville, Col Dant, who was in command of the provost guard, conversed freely with the prisoners, many of whom made him the bearer of mes- sages and other favors te their friends in this city. — of the prisoners were disposed to enter complaint because they were not per- mitted to visit their friends in this city while on their way to their place of confinement. General Buckner expreseed the opinion unre- servedly that he owed his captivity to the folly of Gen. Pillow. The commanders of the Rebel forces at Fort Donelson agreed upon a plan of retreat after they became satisfied they could not win the battle. Pillow, with his forces was to cut his way through the right flank of the Federal forces, and at a given period was to signal Gen. Buckner, who was to attenpt asimilar feat. Pillow succeeded partially, but in the weak- ness of his joy his supposed escape neg- lected the sign: ind set about telegraphing. a report southward that he had won a great vietory. We blush to make the admission, but it was our quondam friend, Dick Wintersmith, who pro- sed to sacrifice the men and save the officers. Bick, it should be remembered, was bimeelf an officer. It is useless to add that he escaped. Gen. Buckner expressed the opinion that the Rebels would not make a stand at Nash- ville Capt.
