A Worp asovt tHe LactuRE Association — Editor of Star: | am a member of the Washing- ton Lecture Association. 1 have paid my fee of membership, attended the lectures, (I do not sit on the platform.) applauded when pleased and kept silence when displeased. [ joined the Asso- ciation for the purpose of aiding in affording to the citizens of Washington a series of lectures varied in style and subjects, political, scientific, and literary. I am anti-slavery in ing, and desired to see the principle established that even that—to some—odious topic could be discussed in the Capital of the nation. But I did not expect that the Association would be perverted to the promulgation of that doctrine to the almost entire exclusion of #1! other subjects. The temperance uestion is a good, moral, ba should we therefore in secure lecturers who run every topic into that channel’ We are informed that the course proper has been com, In fact, we have given one lecture over, in which the tick olders were highly edified and the lecturer extensively advertised bis ion. We have also a second -ecture an- nounced from Rev. Geo. B. Cheever. [ have lis- tened {n vain for a call fora meeting of the full association to listen to a report from the executive committee and devise plans for the future Ast hb no other way to reach the officers of the association, I would crave, through your col- umns, the privilege of asking them some ques- tions. By what authority do they prolong or con- tinue the course of lectures? By what warrant do they engage for 2 second lecture Mr. Cheever « or any other man,” and pay for the same out of the funds of the asseciation without first consult- ing the association? For one I protest against this assumption of power on their part, and espe- clally against the re-engagement of 2 man who vauntingly proclaimed that “‘ he was ashamed of the name of American,” and who villified his sooty when abroad. and whose every breath at home {s laden with abuse of the Government, the Administration and our commanding generals; who has no words of encouragement in the hour of peril but interminable harangues of bitter in- veetive and censure. Yours, AMERICAN. Tue Distaict tx Cononess.—Yesterday, the bill authorizing the appointment of a warden of the District jail was reported back from the com- mitte, by Mr. Grimes, with the recommendation that {t pass. The bill ding for the release of certain per- sons held to service in th» District was also re- tothe Senate, by Mr. Morrill, from the t committee, and its passage recommended. It provides for the emancipation of slaves in the District, with just compensation to loyal masters; end says, among other things, that the continn- ance of s custom offensive to the moral sense, at the common residence of the diplomacy of the Christian nations, as well as the anvual resort of the representatives of the people, parfakes of the quality of a public indecorum. Its repugnance to the sentiments of most of those who officially assemble here !s of itself deemed adequate ground for its discontinuance. The landing was effected under cover of the guns of two of our gunboats, the Deleware and Morse, which, with shrapnel, drove away and dispersed two rebel regiments that were stationed there with three field pieces to oppose their land- ing. Our men were upto their middle in mud and water, in landing. When on shore they found the three rebel field Pi-ces in the morass. By nine P-m_ that night, Gen.
